Kloya took charge of the situation at the Third Trench. The Kloya army faced the spiders with minimal preparation, employing a combination of abilities that ranged from long-range to close combat. The Enhanced Hunters dealt devastating blows up close, capable of slicing through multiple spiders with a single swing of their heavy blades. Some unleashed their abilities, transforming them into Anomalous Projectiles that exploded with the force of High-Explosive Bombs. It was important to note that even a single projectile could wreak havoc, yet they never wasted their extraordinary powers.
Instead, they relied on the skills of Manifestation Type Hunters, who evaded until the moment was right to strike and create opportunities for lethal attacks. Then there were the Automation Class Hunters, who held significant control over the battlefield, using their abilities to dominate their foes. Surprisingly, the spiders began to turn on each other, consuming their own kind—an occurrence that was somewhat linked to the presence of Automation Class Hunters.
Kloya served as the captain of this Elite Hunter Team. He was not only a One-Star Hunter but also stood out among them as an exceptional talent. In his hands was a hefty tome, and he possessed a wide array of abilities.
Mind Bombs and Anomalous Bullets were his favored techniques. The bombs had immense destructive power, often creating clouds of dust upon detonation. Any spider caught in the blast would suffer severe injuries, making this one of Kloya's most satisfying methods of killing. After all, each spider he defeated contributed to his team's score. Once enough points were accumulated, he could withdraw from the front lines and assist other hunters in the Elite Hunter Team.
Not every hunter possessed Kloya's level of skill. Anomalous Bullets were virtual projectiles created through Ability Transformation. While ordinary Anomalous Bullets had a dispersive effect, Kloya's bullets were not scattered but concentrated for a single lethal strike—this was the effect he sought.
This approach was also the least taxing on his stamina; even someone as formidable as Kloya would eventually reach his physical limits.
Most spiders were effectively held back by this elite force. The soldiers' responsibility was to eliminate any remaining aggressive spiders. However, even ordinary spiders could easily kill well-equipped soldiers; their Protective Gear became weak under intense corrosive attacks. Subsequently, spider spears pierced through soldiers' chests as effortlessly as cutting through butter.
The Kloya Elite Hunter Team displayed unmatched prowess against their adversaries—the ruthless Zerg. Spiders were part of this race's sixth major branch, known for their high reproductive capabilities and varying strengths. Juvenile Spiders could immediately be used for gathering food or hunting prey. Among the high-end units within the spider hierarchy were massive adult Mutated Spiders and plague-carrying spiders that spread infectious viruses.
Three tribes controlled their respective soldier groups, and this time the Elite Hunter Team targeted Mutated Spiders—known for their aggressive nature and threefold lifespan compared to other spider types. This longevity contributed to their massive size; however, smaller spiders sometimes concealed deadly temptations.
Fortunately, Mutated Spiders were not poisonous; otherwise, the soldiers behind them would have faced dire consequences. Although the Hunters' physical attributes surpassed those of ordinary humans, these toxins could linger in their bodies for extended periods. The lethal toxins no longer posed an immediate threat but instead lay dormant within them like ticking time bombs, ready to erupt unexpectedly during critical battles—an outcome that did not bode well for an already stalemated conflict.
As time passed, an unexpected shift occurred in the battle dynamics. The Mutated Spider faction suffered severe casualties while the human side saw improved survival rates since the Hunters Association's hunters joined the fray. Even the weakest soldiers managed to stay alive; although many bore injuries, those who survived against the Zerg's onslaught proved worthy of being called human champions, experiencing significant advancements in their mental acuity and strategic thinking.
The role of the Mecha Association came at a significant cost, primarily due to the ammunition capacity issues of Unit Zero. However, the purpose of Unit Zero was to dominate the battlefield. Without their assistance in restraining many large Mutated Spiders' invasions, the casualties of the Kloya Elite Hunter Team would likely have exceeded half, and that was just the most conservative estimate.
This battle was truly heart-stopping, with the military suffering numerous casualties. Those veterans were soldiers with real battlefield experience; they would never hold their ground unless it was a dire situation.
Losing the Giant Hive, which served as a barrier against the invasion, would truly plunge humanity into a desperate situation. The only remaining defense was the final barrier guarded by Noah's Sanctuary. This barrier offered no advantages; it was flat and open, lacking any cover from terrain or timing. Even advanced civilization and weaponry could not withstand the ferocious assaults of the Swarm.
Just as the tide of battle seemed on the verge of breaking, a sudden command echoed from the Third Trench position in the military district.
"Third Squad, retreat! We will take over everything now."
The speaker was a One-Eyed Man clad in Black Armor. He pulled out a scroll made of parchment, and the young garrison officer Dazed stared at the watermark and familiar signature on it, his jaw dropping in astonishment.
Turning around, Dazed saw that behind the One-Eyed Man in Black Armor stood many hunters—over a hundred in total. Among them were five familiar faces he barely recognized; four of them were One-Star Hunters. No wonder they were ordered to retreat; the Hunter Association aimed to seize control in this war.
The soldiers of the Military Department had suffered immensely in this campaign, and it would likely take three years to recover to their former strength. However, if they retreated now under orders, they would bury even the benefits they were about to gain. If they fought for their lives, there had to be a reason for them to share in the spoils.
"I’m afraid I cannot follow that order. I will stand here with my soldiers and eliminate those monsters. For the fallen soldiers, we must witness victory with our own eyes," Dazed quickly turned his head away.
Good raised an eyebrow. "I have brought military orders; your highest commander Ramel Sergeant Major issued this directive personally. Your Military Department has suffered the most severe casualties in this battle, so there is no reason for the Association not to allow you to receive what you deserve. Moreover, you have shown me what true warrior spirit means. Thank you; I hope to drink with you again after our victory."
