The situation was worse than expected; after walking for a while, they had hardly encountered anyone.
The most they saw were groups of soldiers, but these soldiers seemed indifferent to the presence of others.
Every time they saw this, it was disappointing.
However, not long after, they spotted three young men standing nearby, basking in the sun.
Seeing them, Freyr felt it was worth trying to approach. He stepped closer and quickly asked, "Hello, may I ask if something happened in Slyland City? Why is there no one around? What's going on?"
The leader of the group glanced at him and replied, "You came here without knowing anything? This is just how it is here—there's no one around during the day. More people come out at night. The main issue is that sometimes we have incidents where bugs attack people. The locals are quite superstitious; they believe it's a disaster sent by the gods. Every night, they hold a ritual involving human brains to appease their deities."
Freyr was puzzled. "Um, aren't the people here mostly immigrants? Do they really have beliefs related to bugs?"
Unexpectedly, upon hearing this, the other person seemed furious. His expression changed slightly as he retorted angrily, "What do you mean by that? Those bugs are special; they move like humans, and the army can't do anything about them. They are gods to us; we believe they are like that. In the past, there would be some squads coming to understand the local conditions and capturing people. They would say those taken were brought away by God to serve Him. For me, it certainly wouldn't be that simple."
"Now it's not daytime, so why are you all outside with no one around?" Freyr pressed for more understanding. He caught a whiff of grilled meat from a nearby stand and felt his appetite stir; it had been a long time since he had tasted such rich food.
"Ah, it's just to make a living. We thought moving to a new place would allow us to take charge and become masters of the city. But we found that moving from one region to another didn't change much; life is still the same as before. It's just that sometimes it's really unsafe here. If you're just here for sightseeing, you should leave as soon as possible; it's not safe here, especially at night when things get chaotic. Don't be fooled by how armed everyone looks on the Tower; it’s actually useless. Those gods can fly over and capture anyone they see—no one can stop them. In fact, if there’s no business for us here, we’ll have to leave this city too. That’s just how things are in Slyland City." The young man shook his head and sighed as he continued explaining.
"Alright then, thank you for the information," Freyr said with a hint of resignation as he handed over some money. "I'll take some skewers of lamb."
With that thought in mind, he paid for his food and turned to leave.
This piece of information was useful for him; he finally understood the main situation in Slyland. No wonder there were so many missions related to this place—it was clear that things were quite complicated here. Therefore, executing missions in this area could be very dangerous; even low-level Bounty Missions sometimes posed significant risks that could even be fatal.
The future path was uncertain, and Freyr understood that executing his mission here would not be as easy as he had imagined.
With the intelligence he had gathered, he felt somewhat grounded, but this fragmentary information was far from sufficient. He needed to find out more about the local situation to understand the main circumstances at this time and place. Once he had a clearer picture, he would need to resolve it quickly or report directly to the guild, allowing professional hunters to grasp what was happening firsthand.
Those flying insects that resembled humans—could they be the newly emerged creatures mentioned in the news, the Insectoids?!
Given their level, encountering Insectoids would likely lead to a total annihilation.
With this thought in mind, he continued westward, biting into a lamb skewer.
The scene before him was just as he had expected—wide open and seemingly devoid of people.
However, upon entering an alley, he frequently spotted various folding tables and chairs, along with eerie altars.
On these altars lay the heads of various animals, which served little purpose other than attracting flies.
Yet this mission still needed to be completed. With just over half a month left, thoroughly resolving the issues here would indeed be quite challenging.
Before long, two hours had passed, marking the time for their first assembly to regroup.
As everyone looked at one another, they couldn't help but feel a slight sense of relief. Initially, they hadn't appreciated the benefits of having many people around.
Now, however, they felt comforted by the presence of others, sparing them from the suffocating loneliness. Reflecting on what they had learned from the Lamb Skewer Uncle, they recounted it in detail, leaving everyone in a state of shock.
"Uh, uh, uh, the information I've gathered confirms the same. It seems there's indeed a serious problem here. Those so-called flying humanoid insects, they refer to them as gods, and they use altars to offer various animal heads for their use. This news has been kept under wraps in this city, even the guild is completely in the dark," Ross replied with an unusual seriousness.
"Yes, that's exactly why we're here—to resolve this issue. If we believe we can do it, then we can," Freyr stated confidently.
"But Commander, isn't our purpose just to handle the tasks at hand? Once we finish, we should just go back. Taking on missions beyond our authority without rewards doesn't make sense. What if something goes wrong?" Mackey interjected, rarely speaking up and showing an awkward expression.
"That may have been the original plan, but you see the situation now. If we don't act, who knows how long it will take for this place to recover? Remember our oath when we joined the guild; we must not betray that. Or are you all afraid of death? Even now?" Freyr's tone shifted slightly.
"Uh, uh, uh, it's not that I'm afraid; I just feel powerless. Who knows when those monsters will strike again? It's endless. The mission we have to complete is already tough enough. The reality is that even those insects encountered in the mission are likely just the advance troops. Although there are many of them, we only have six people. Confronting their swarm-like attacks without a proper strategy or external support makes victory difficult, let alone collecting their corpses."
