They didn't know how much longer they had to walk, but the situation had improved somewhat along the way.
However, no matter how they observed, they couldn't completely relax. There was a lingering worry that something might be tracking them from below. All their fears and thoughts vanished in an instant. It felt strange; after walking for a while, they realized that nothing had happened, but the longer this state continued, the more unsettling it became.
The vehicle was equipped with the highest-grade Sonar detector, yet during the survey, no anomalies were detected. Logically, there should have been more occurrences, but there were no unusual situations at all. Could it be that the machine was malfunctioning?
Yet according to the senses of the Assassins and Hunters, there were indeed some creatures lurking beneath their feet. Perhaps the Sonar's testing wasn't thorough enough; it could detect fish in the ocean and even squid-like creatures with clarity, let alone terrestrial animals. But that was the reality.
However, these Medics had witnessed firsthand the terrifying nature of humans. Humanity was indeed a remarkably fearsome species with immense potential. To ensure the safety of ordinary people, Hunters and Assassins often blended into crowds, taking this approach to safeguard everyone. It just made their operations a bit more cumbersome and time-consuming.
Although this delayed their unit's processes slightly, it was better than encountering an accident. The higher-ups had also approved an extension for collecting insect corpses.
The public servant shook his head and continued, "It seems we have done all we can for today. Thank you all for your hard work; we need to be more vigilant on our return journey."
Ross shook his head and said, "Today's mission is complete; we can rest once we return. Commander, it's truly great that nothing went wrong."
"Yes, it's really wonderful that there were no unexpected incidents," someone else responded.
Freyr chuckled wryly and said, "You all might be too naive; the current situation could be worse than you imagine. Ah, being simple-minded is nice—it's lucky." After a moment's thought, he continued to ponder.
"Commander, has something happened? Or is there something else going on?" Xiong Tai blurted out. He was known for his carefree attitude and was often considered the least reliable member of the team when it came to serious matters. Many knew that their conversations often veered off track.
Freyr wasn't bothered by Xiong Tai's bluntness; he remained silent. Even without saying a word, their actions sometimes seemed intentional. A mere twitch of an eyelid could reveal what each other was thinking; their understanding had reached such a level of tacit agreement.
As time passed, a certain understanding naturally developed between them. Sometimes, this sense of connection only arises after spending a long time together, even without the need for words; a glance could convey a mutual recognition.
The return journey did not take long, and although they encountered unexpected circumstances at the start, the way back was remarkably safe.
Before long, they arrived at the Tower in Nipoguan.
"Thank you for your hard work," they said as they returned to the tent, just in time for dinner. With little left to do, they planned to shower and then eat.
"Wow, the food today is really delicious," one of them remarked as they sat down. Just then, light footsteps echoed from the entrance, followed by a gust of wind that swept in with a fair amount of sand. They barely had a chance to take a bite before they spat it out.
Xiong Tai suddenly realized what was happening. "What’s going on? What happened? I just got a mouthful of sand! I’m going to turn someone into minced meat!"
"It’s fine, it’s fine! Everyone just eat," a guard rushed in from the entrance, quickly putting on a smile.
At this point, he was surrounded by many people. As he pondered what to do next, several faces were already close to him. It seemed unrealistic to think about anything else because no one would show him any kindness. So he decided to remain silent while some people ran outside, only to return moments later as if they had seen something astonishing that frightened them.
Xiong Tai nodded and immediately responded, "Hey, what exactly happened outside? You better spill it." He glared at the man in front of him, exaggerating his expression as he watched the trembling individual swallow hard and point towards someone else.
He looked over with some resignation. He didn’t care how much others misunderstood him; after all, everyone was equally afraid of him.
There was nothing good about that situation, and he was quite familiar with the members of his team.
He glanced at Freyr and then at Xiong Tai beside him. With an exasperated sigh, he breathed out, "It’s a helicopter! It’s a helicopter!" Just then, footsteps could be heard approaching from outside.
The door was pushed open, and a group of individuals in uniforms entered, looking like a bunch of officers.
Perhaps due to a zero-tolerance policy towards chaotic situations, one of them blew a whistle in confusion upon seeing the disorder before him. He then adopted a commanding tone, while those beside him took a deep breath and returned to their usual demeanor, pushing aside those nearby. They stood straight in formation, and aside from the overturned tables and scattered food remnants on the floor, the room appeared quite chaotic.
"You have five minutes to restore this place to its original state; otherwise..." the officer said sternly, a faint smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
After delivering this message, they immediately turned and walked out of the room.
At that moment, the atmosphere in the dining hall grew particularly tense. When the first person bent down to pick up the vegetable leaves on the floor, others quickly followed suit. Within two or three minutes, the environment was much cleaner than when they had first entered. When the officers returned and surveyed their surroundings, they nodded in approval.
"Sir, what is your purpose for coming here?" someone suddenly asked.
"Good question; I appreciate your frankness, soldier," replied the officer with a slight smile. "My purpose is quite clear. I've received reports that there are enemies lurking underground here that cannot be detected by sonar. They are formidable opponents. Can we afford to withdraw midway? I arrived first; the rest of the troops are still on their way and should be arriving gradually by tomorrow morning. How accurate is your information?"
At this point, everyone inside fell silent. They were unsure of how to respond.
Both sides could offend someone, so those with a bit of emotional intelligence chose to remain quiet.
