"Need it? Don't expect us to be foolish enough to let you drive," Ross laughed, though he felt there might be a hint of sarcasm in his tone. He quickly changed his demeanor and added, "Um, I mean we won't let you drive. Your job is to gather useful information; the dangerous work can be handled by us later."
"Well, that's not fair. Just because someone is blind doesn't mean they can't drive," Nosty replied calmly.
However, this unexpected response revealed a deeper issue. The idea of a blind person driving was less believable than the notion of a human being able to jump straight into the atmosphere; the latter seemed statistically more plausible.
Blindness is a complete inability to see, making it impossible to drive.
In reality, this wasn't an absolute truth, but he didn't delve further into it. The world is full of wonders; perhaps there really are blind individuals who could achieve such feats?
Continuing to question this line of thought wasn't productive. The car continued on its path, soon entering what was referred to as the inquiry phase. This was meant for both parties to get to know each other better and ask questions that could reveal aspects of one's character—questions that would reflect their thoughts at that moment and their judgment in extreme situations.
Their approach was similar to that used when interviewing psychiatric patients; they aimed to clarify certain details and understand the individual's perspective. They often reassured the subjects with phrases like, "Don't feel burdened; we're just chatting. Think of me as a friend; there's no need to worry. Once we're done talking, you'll be free to go."
Yet, in Nosty's eyes, these reassurances were meaningless. The two engaged in serious conversation, both maintaining earnest attitudes.
At this point, the vehicle quickly arrived at the association's premises.
After disembarking, they soon entered a room where the association's evaluators were already present in a gym-like setting. There were only a few people inside, but Ross was led to wait at the door while others surged around him, beginning to test his physical data. One aspect involved assessing his Ultimate abilities while also identifying any deficiencies; areas where he met standards would be noted positively, while shortcomings would receive negative marks in their records.
The evaluators appeared very serious and meticulous in their conduct. At times, they seemed indifferent about whether he would be accepted or not. Their approach towards understanding each individual was marked by a lack of carelessness in their work attitude. However, they generally understood that this person would potentially become an additional member of Hunter Team 116, so they were keen to learn about his characteristics and whether he possessed the qualifications to become a hunter.
This inevitably made for a challenging decision-making process. If he were allowed to pass too easily, it would undermine their credibility; there were many others who worked harder than him but lacked the necessary qualifications and could never break into the ranks of hunters. Some individuals were gifted yet squandered their talents, while others had little ability and relied on connections for high rewards. Even if he were granted membership under such circumstances, it would merely make him expendable. Despite this reality, they were determined not to let him leave so easily.
"Did you previously serve in a special forces unit, the Crimson Dragon Legion? That was once known as the premier special operations group, quite an impressive team. What role did you play there? How do you believe you can become a qualified Hunter?"
"And do you know what a Hunter does? Have you ever been on the battlefield? This is not as simple as a simulation game. Each of us has blood on our hands from taking lives, and we humans cannot coexist with the Zerg. Are you aware of this? I ask these questions for you to answer honestly. After that, I will conduct a physical assessment, including collecting your blood and taking cell samples to evaluate your Ultimate range. This will also serve as an experience for you; why not seize this opportunity?"
"Relax a bit; you seem a little tense. Just think of it as a physical training session. We are your coaches, and you should follow my instructions without any psychological burden. After all, this will help avoid mistakes. That's my perspective. Of course, you might think that being nervous can make you stronger, and that's fine too. If you have any requests, we can provide more motivation for you. I just want to see your Ultimate abilities; we will score based on that. However, you'll only be allowed to leave this room after the results are announced."
The reviewers in front of him were lined up, all wearing sunglasses. It wasn't just the sunglasses that were noteworthy; the lenses continuously reflected digital information, analyzing physical strength and weaknesses across five dimensions, even revealing hidden disabilities.
Although they were already aware of his background from previous mentions, this was not a standard for scoring deductions. According to the agency's guidelines, disabilities would not disqualify him from employment.
As long as they could see his strengths, the Hunter Association would still consider hiring him. After all, individuals with military experience possess a certain quality of obedience, which is highly valued by the Hunter Association. They are known for their courage and willingness to take responsibility; there are few better candidates for adaptation than them.
"I served in the Red Dragon Army Third Armored Division as an Observer, with no other offensive roles. My performance in simulated missions was outstanding. Becoming a Hunter is my greatest aspiration because I want to give back to humanity. As a member of humanity, I believe this is the path I must take in the future. Even if it leads to a dead end, I would walk forward without hesitation. Additionally, my brain capacity has been fully developed; I understand your thoughts clearly. I can simulate anything through my mental domain. Just recently, I was thinking about simulating driving, and I already know how to excel at this job. Even if I lose my sight, I can assist my team in other ways and gather better intelligence at crucial moments. Furthermore, I am a Mental Enhancer; communication is my strong suit. I've worked as a mental therapist in a psychiatric hospital and can communicate with animals. As for the Zerg, I haven't tried it yet, but theoretically speaking, it shouldn't be an issue." His words flowed like a rehearsed script.
However, these were merely statements of fact; while it was possible that some of them were true, relying solely on individual opinions about his capabilities would not suffice. He needed to undergo testing to provide at least one experimental reference point.
At this point, one of the reviewers made a phone call, and the door opened to reveal a crawling insect being brought in—a creature with a bumpy surface resembling a slimy earthworm. Although it looked strange, it was indeed classified within the Zerg and was often considered delicacy on human dining tables.
