New Era of Humanity in the Apocalypse
Freyr was quite confident in his own body. Although he understood that the current situation was potentially dangerous for him and felt like he was dragging the entire team down, his frail condition was of little help. There was a fleeting desire to have them assist him in finding relief, but as soon as this thought arose, it was quickly extinguished by the others. It seemed no one wanted to take such drastic measures; after all, it would be too chaotic, and no one was willing to truly go that far. The consequences behind such an action were far too heavy. If he were to act on that impulse, his hands would likely become tainted, and afterward, no one would want to communicate with him again.
Describing his future life as despicable and doomed seemed to be the only realistic path ahead. The road ahead was indeed long, and there was no need to resort to such extremes. It was imperative to help the current team members escape their predicament within the limits of his abilities. After all, it was for their sake that he had ended up in this situation. His vital signs were stable, but his spirit was waning, and his body felt utterly drained. To overcome this weakness, rest was undoubtedly the most urgent necessity.
On another note, if nourishment combined with rest and medication proved ineffective, then some means would have to be employed to bring about a solution. The current situation clearly hadn't deteriorated to that extent. Ross had experienced quite a bit, but this wasn't the first time he faced such circumstances. He had precious ingredients that he had kept close at hand for emergencies. He even exchanged for a very valuable storage ring and began taking out bags of ingredients, causing Xiong Tai nearby to hesitate and step back.
Upon opening his eyes, he found that the ingredients before him were terrifyingly grotesque corpses of creatures. He had read ancient texts on health preservation; rats and cockroaches were considered great tonics for those suffering from weakness. Using these corpses as medicinal catalysts could enhance their effects.
Indeed, some doctors believed these substances could be used as food and significantly aid recovery. If such corpses could serve as medicinal materials, they were not something just anyone could handle. However, many people never considered consuming them; after all, unless one had experienced extreme weakness themselves, they wouldn't think of using such things as medicine. On one hand, these items were too repulsive; on the other hand, there was a certain specificity about these ingredients—after all, not just any rat could be considered food. If gathering materials from anywhere could yield medicinal catalysts, then the profession of medicine would have been abolished long ago.
On another note, Ross pulled out a large white bone from the bag—Astonishing in size. This bone wasn't ordinary; it belonged to a wild beast whose broth would provide greater nutritional value when simmered with some low-heat ingredients for balance.
The current priority was to rid himself of weakness symptoms and restore mobility as much as possible. Therefore, these medicinal materials weren't used lightly; under normal circumstances, Ross wouldn't dare use them at all. However, he had spent considerable time acquiring them. This was the first time he intended to use them on a companion; if he didn't utilize them now, the potential for mission failure loomed large.
In fact, these medicinal materials proved remarkably effective. After resting for two hours and making up his mind, tasks became irrelevant; they had decided to use this matter as a shield against any repercussions from the association. If they lost their entire team during this mission, the consequences would be evident.
The situation turned out not to be as dire as imagined; after a few more actions, it wouldn't matter much anyway. Given their time constraints, they could afford some leniency in their approach. Ideally, they would restore their bodies enough to move freely again; however, they also needed to conserve resources since they only had enough supplies for about twenty people left on board—plus a quarter of food remaining in the vehicle. Therefore, it was essential to reserve seven portions of rations during their time outside the Catacomb; there was no other choice given the challenging environment here. Even if they ultimately found no way out, blasting through a section of land to escape would suffice.
There was no need to concern themselves with how the ecosystem inside functioned anymore; if these primitive creatures could adapt to the outside world upon exiting, their impact would undoubtedly be significant. Moreover, there were not only humans outside but also another faction known as the Zerg.
The Zerg was quite fearsome. Although the Crawling Creatures had a physical advantage due to their size, their intelligence was far inferior to that of the Zerg. Therefore, even if experiments were conducted on the Crawling Creatures or a stone was thrown to incite conflict among them, humans could take advantage of the situation without any harm.
As the second-to-last day of the designated rest period approached, Freyr's physical condition had improved by half. On the surface, he appeared vibrant and full of life, as if he had been nourished with the finest ingredients and supplements. However, if he continued to consume such things, his body's balance would likely collapse.
Maintaining his physique was truly a troublesome task. Freyr couldn't rely on the same methods indefinitely to keep his body unchanged, and he was quickly approaching an age where gaining weight would become a concern. If he continued to indulge in these supplements, it would surely have negative consequences.
Thus, he aimed to avoid further nourishing his body with these products. The remaining time should be spent finding a way out and then returning for proper rest while engaging in restorative exercises to maintain his peak condition—this was the best choice.
Although Ross needed to continue recuperating, Freyr quickly took over the conversation. They needed to leave this place as soon as possible. The nutrients were damaging him; he was known for his exceptional physical qualities and did not want to become a big fat guy again. That would hinder his speed, which was essential for survival, and could lead to lifelong repercussions that would not benefit him at all.
They tore down the tent and left behind anything they couldn't carry. After all, if others came by later, the tent and cover could provide them with assistance. The probability of encountering such an opportunity seemed relatively low; after all, one had to pass through numerous dangers to reach this point, and finding a way out was not guaranteed. The nature of this situation was truly perilous.
Emerging from the tent, they immediately sensed that the surrounding environment felt quite different. Having been cooped up inside, they rarely got to see the outside world, so everything appeared somewhat altered.
Perhaps it was simply the novelty of it all; many people believed that such feelings were only understood through experience. Indeed, things were different now, and everyone felt a strong resonance within themselves.
