The surroundings were pitch black, with the sound of a wolf howling in the distance. I dared not get out of the car or fall asleep, locking all four doors tightly, enduring endless despair and fear minute by minute.
That man had the audacity to come onto my vehicle and bully me; either he didn't regard my husband at all, or my husband was already under their control, or... I couldn't bear to think of the worst outcome.
In the boundless darkness, I sat in my seat, sobbing, then breaking into wails. After exhausting myself from crying, I wondered what to do next. If my husband was gone, as a woman with only a driver's license and little driving experience, how could I navigate through this vast Gobi Desert? I didn't even know where the road I came from was anymore!
I oscillated between moments of clarity and confusion until dawn finally broke. Gathering my courage, I stepped out to relieve myself. Behind the car loomed a steep hill with an incline exceeding 40 degrees, its peak shrouded in mist. If it were in the mainland, it could easily be called a mountain. Last night, I had blindly and fearlessly climbed over it; had there been even a slight misstep, it would have surely ended in disaster! Less than 50 meters ahead was a sheer cliff several dozen meters deep; at the speed I was going last night, just a few more seconds would have sent me plummeting down!
Recalling the frantic escape from yesterday, I realized that in my panic and poor driving skills, I had even forgotten to turn on the headlights! It was nothing short of a miracle that there were no fatalities. Perhaps it was because I hadn’t turned on the lights that the vehicle pursuing me lost sight of its target, giving me a chance to escape!
Underneath the passenger seat, I found my lost phone along with a military coat that must have belonged to that man. Beneath the coat lay a belt with two holsters attached. As I looked inside the holsters, darkness clouded my vision and tremors coursed through my body: what kind of man was surrounded by flames? Did he have accomplices? Did they also carry such deadly weapons?
Regardless of anything else, I had to survive!
I started the car and cautiously turned it around to head up the slope. The towering incline and seemingly endless height made my scalp tingle. How had I managed to get over it last night?
As the sun climbed higher in the sky, I finally reached the top of the slope. Looking around, the Gobi stretched out before me in eerie silence. I got out and searched for tracks from when I arrived, carefully following them downwards.
By midday, I finally spotted last night's campsite in the distance. Here remained only a solitary pickup truck. Feeling slightly reassured as I approached it, I dared not stop but gently pressed the horn!
The pickup's door swung open, and two figures rushed down.
“Wife, is that you?”
I slammed on the brakes in shock.
It's my husband; he's still alive!
I ran over, shouting, "Husband!"
Behind her was a woman holding a large wrench—Tina.
"I got blackout drunk yesterday. While I was outside taking a leak, I passed out and fell asleep. It was her dog that found me, and they put me in their car..."
"What about my husband?" Tina circled around me, suddenly screaming at the top of her lungs, "What did you do to him? Where is he?"
Is this coat I'm wearing Tina's husband's?
Was it him who tried to assault me yesterday?
How could they not know what happened last night?
"Give me back my husband! Give me back my husband!" Tina lunged at me, pulling and tearing at me, while Liang Zhiyuan looked at me with a predatory glare. "You were together last night, weren't you? What did you... do? If he's over there, I'll kill him!"
"Enough!" I shouted sharply.
It was one thing for the woman to be unreasonable, but I couldn't believe Liang Zhiyuan didn't even say a word of concern and instead doubted me!
Is it really true what they say in stories: "Only after experiencing certain things does one realize whether those around them are human or monsters!"
After calming the two frantic individuals, I finally steadied myself and recounted what happened last night. As I spoke of the sleepless night filled with fear and despair of being a woman alone in the wilderness, I couldn't help but burst into tears. "You got drunk? What if someone really assaulted you yesterday and you wouldn't even know? And you? If this coat belongs to your husband, then he deserves to die; he's a thug, a rapist! He almost choked me to death; he deserves to burn!"
For a moment, both of them fell silent.
We got out of the car to search but found no dead bodies—not even a fresh grave.
The terror of fleeing in the first half of the night and the half-dreaming fear in the latter half, combined with Liang Zhiyuan's coldness, struck my heart like lightning. My legs went weak, darkness enveloped me, and I lost all awareness.
