"What are you trying to trick me into?"
Was it his idea, or was it my master's?
In the end, I couldn't help but ask Mu Xuanche, "If they want to harm me, why did you let me come to be your disciple?"
Mu Xuanche smiled lightly, his hand gently stroking my neck, his tone low and somewhat resigned. "No one wants to harm you; they're just protecting you in different ways."
"What do you mean? The more I listen, the more confused I get."
"When the time comes for you to know, you will naturally understand."
I stubbornly tugged at Mu Xuanche's sleeve. At this moment, I seemed to have started to fear the Ghost Husband a little less.
"Just tell me."
"Wife, since you have so much energy, let's have some fun."
Before I could refuse, he swept me up onto the bed. He pressed down on me and kissed me all over.
His cold lips brushed lightly against my ear as he whispered, "Wife, give yourself to me."
I was already a bit dazed from the kisses. In these matters, he was always more patient than usual. Step by step, he guided me into surrendering, his voice deep and magnetic, making it hard for me to resist.
With just a slight nod of my head, he noticed.
Then came the storm, and even though it had just raged last night, he was like a glutton, constantly demanding more from me.
It wasn't until I truly could bear no more that he slowly released me.
Even when the storm subsided, he was reluctant to let me go. He lay beside me, continuously kissing my shoulder until I fell asleep.
When I awoke a second time, I found I lacked the strength to even raise my hand; my body felt as limp as a doll with its strings cut, unable to muster any energy.
After much effort, I finally managed to crawl out of bed. Originally, I intended to head to the medicinal pool on the back mountain for some comfort, but recalling Mu Xuanche's instructions before he left this morning, I had no choice but to abandon that plan.
I obediently took a shower in my room and then stepped outside in search of food.
As my master had said, there were hardly any rules in the Xuan Sect; disciples were not required to attend morning classes or anything of the sort. Regular practice relied entirely on personal initiative.
At this hour, the cafeteria had already run out of food, so I could only head to the back kitchen to see if I could scrounge up something to eat.
As I approached the kitchen door, I overheard someone talking inside.
With my keen ears, I caught mention of my name and paused to listen in on what they were discussing.
"Hey, do you know about the new female disciple that the sect leader just took in?"
"Yeah, Gu Si, right? We saw her in the main hall not long ago."
"Second Brother, didn't you say the Master stopped taking disciples? Why did he take in this girl? Does she have some sort of background?"
"What background could she possibly have? Our Master is an Earth Immortal; who would dare threaten him? Perhaps he's just grown old and decided to let go of the past, no longer holding a grudge against Second Brother, so he took her in."
"Second Brother, you really have guts, daring to talk about the secrets of the Xuan Sect. Don't you know that mentioning Second Brother could get you expelled from the sect?"
"I know, but still. It's such a pity about Second Brother; he was so young and talented when he passed away."
Seeing that they had stopped talking, I quietly slipped away.
Questions swirled in my mind. So Second Brother was already dead, but what had caused his death? Why had he become a taboo within the Xuan Sect?
What secrets lay hidden beneath this? It felt as if everyone was keeping something from me.
At three in the afternoon, I arrived at the back mountain on time, but this time Shangguan Mingyue did not come.
Li Mubai told me that Shangguan Mingyue already knew this subject, so there was no need for practice.
It wasn't surprising; after all, she had been with the Xuan Sect for so many years.
"Senior Brother, what are we practicing today?"
Li Mubai shot me a cold glance and replied, "Spirit Crossing."
For those who practice cultivation, the greatest merit lies in helping souls reincarnate as soon as possible.
Thus, guiding souls is a skill that every cultivator must master.
After explaining the basic elements of soul guiding, Li Mubai tossed a scripture book to me as I prepared to leave.
"Senior Brother, wait a moment."
He paused, turned around to look at me, his expression somewhat puzzled.
I smiled slightly and said calmly, "Senior Brother, why is it that I only see you and Mingyue? I've never encountered Second Senior Brother."
Li Mubai's face paled for an instant, and the book in his hand fell to the ground. What could possibly cause this usually stoic person to show such emotion?
I feigned calmness as I awaited Li Mubai's response; after all, he was the most favored disciple of our master.
"Don't ask what you shouldn't."
Li Mubai's face remained cold as he dropped that line and walked away.
Having read the scripture thirty times, my memory was quite good. From dawn until dusk, I had nearly memorized it all.
I recited it once more in front of the computer on the table, and with a click, the locked door around me swung open.
Before coming to the Xuan Sect, I thought all Taoists were quite outdated. It wasn't until I arrived here that I realized there were so many extraordinary individuals.
For instance, the technique of locking doors with a chant was developed by a former executive from a high-tech position. He created the program code here at the Xuan Sect, and now he’s even sweeping the courtyard.
This silently elevated my attitude towards the Xuan Sect; indeed, one should not judge by appearances.
Leaving the meditation retreat in the back mountains, which is where I practiced my chanting, I had to pass through a bamboo forest.
It felt eerie at night, especially since there were no streetlights around—probably to save on costs. I suspected my master was just being stingy.
I turned on the flashlight on my phone, using its faint light to guide my way.
As I was about to exit the bamboo grove, I heard some faint sounds nearby.
Oh dear, sigh...
It sounded like a woman’s painful moan.
Surely there are no ghosts daring to cause trouble within the Xuan Sect. It seemed like only Shangguan Mingyue and I were the women on this mountain.
That sound definitely wasn’t from Shangguan Mingyue. I slowly walked toward it.
After passing through a pile of rocks in the artificial hill, I saw a ghostly woman with long hair lying on the ground.
She reached out, her hand glowing with a faint crimson light, as if it had just been burned and had yet to extinguish.
Seemingly aware of my arrival, she turned her face to look at me.
The moment our eyes met, we both froze in shock.
I recognized this ghost; finally, I understood why she appeared at Xuanzong. She was the same ghost who had gripped me so fiercely that her image was etched deeply in my mind. How could she be lying here, so gravely injured?
I silently asked, "Are you okay?"
"You dare to show yourself in front of me," the ghost snarled at me.
I felt a surge of anger at her attitude. "Hey, I was asking if you were alright out of kindness. Why are you being so hostile?"
"I don't need your pity. If it weren't for you, how could I be hurt like this?"
Her gaze was filled with fierce hatred, as if she wished to kill me on the spot.
"What are you talking about? How is this my fault? Don't go around blaming others unjustly."
"If it’s not your fault, then how did I end up like this? Stop pretending to be compassionate and get lost."
The ghost screamed at me in despair before collapsing back onto the ground, groaning in pain.
It didn't seem like she was lying. Could there be some misunderstanding here?
I turned to the ghost woman and said, "I'll ask you one last time, why did you harm me?"
She smirked, a cold smile spreading across her face. "You're quite the actor. If it weren't for you sending your Ghost Husband to seek revenge on me, would I be in this situation?"
"Are you Mu Xuanche?" I exclaimed in disbelief.
The ghost woman let out a chilling laugh and turned away from me. I recalled the fierce look in Mu Xuanche's eyes when he saw the brutal scars on my neck.
If this was truly his doing, I wouldn't be surprised.
Thinking about it, the ghost woman was somewhat pitiful. She was just carrying out her mission and unintentionally hurt me. Yet, Mu Xuanche had turned things into this mess. I crouched down and helped her lean against a nearby stone.
I whispered to her, "I'm sorry, I didn't know Mu Xuanche would come looking for you."
To my surprise, she pushed me away forcefully. "Get lost! I don't need your false kindness."
Mu Xuanche was the one who harmed her; why was she taking it out on me?
If she could be angry, so could I. I stood up and ignored her, ready to leave.
Just as I started to walk away, she called out, "Hey, what are you doing?"
"You told me to get lost, so I did, to spare you the sight of me."
The expression on the female ghost's face appeared somewhat unnatural, looking a bit awkward as she opened her mouth but couldn't utter a single word.
Finally, I couldn't help but ask, "So, how can I help you? This is your last chance; otherwise, I'm leaving."
Just as I was about to stand up, the female ghost grabbed my arm and said, "Give me a little of your blood."
I initially thought about cutting myself to give her blood, but then I reconsidered and proposed a condition.
"I'll give you my blood if you answer one question for me."
The female ghost furrowed her brows and shouted at me, "It was your Underworld Husband who harmed me. Shouldn't you save me?"
"True, but it was also Mu Xuanche who hurt you. Why don't you go find him?"
The female ghost gritted her teeth in frustration and said, "You..."
"I want to know about Second Senior Brother."
When I asked the question, the female ghost clearly looked shocked.
She shook her head, seemingly unwilling to share the answer with me.
I intensified my threat, saying, "If you don't cooperate, I guarantee you'll be in a world of trouble. Even if it doesn't happen this time, it will next time. Mu Xuanche is someone who repays every slight; think carefully, only I can save you."
"Are you sure that if I tell you, you'll save me?" The female ghost stared at me intently, as if afraid I might be lying.
I nodded and assured her.
"Why are you asking about Second Senior Brother? Don't you know that's the biggest secret of the Xuanzong right now?"
"Don't worry about that. Just tell me what happened to Second Senior Brother."
The ghost's eyes looked somewhat pitiful. "Second Senior Brother is dead. His soul didn't reincarnate but fell into the ghost realm, opposing the Xuanzong from now on. The most favored disciple of Jade Sun True Person stands against him, which has caused a drastic change in his temperament. The reasons behind this are known only to Jade Sun True Person."
"Alright, I've told you everything I know. You must keep your promise and give me your blood."
