I never expected that what I saw was not a human face, but a terrifying mask. The person wore this mask, and he appeared remarkably calm, as if he already knew I had awakened. He sat quietly in place, emanating an aura that made him seem distant and unapproachable. I silently began to retreat.
However, he had no intention of letting me go. He reached out, grasped my chin, and forced me to meet his gaze. The surroundings were eerily silent; I could hear my own breathing and heartbeat clearly. Yet he did not even take a breath throughout our encounter. Was he not human? Was he a ghost?
Neither of us spoke. He stared at me intently while I cautiously observed him, careful not to let him notice. After confirming that he did not intend to harm me, I mustered the courage to ask, "Who are you?"
"Hmph," he scoffed, a cold sound that carried both arrogance and disdain. "What makes you think you have the right to know who I am?"
What gave me the right? I didn't know either, and his abrupt response left me momentarily speechless.
"Get some rest," he said before standing up to leave.
Seeing him about to vanish, unsure of when he might appear again, I hurriedly called out to him.
"Wait,"
Fortunately, he did not refuse me and stopped to turn back, waiting for my next words.
"When can I go back?"
I finished speaking, my heart anxiously awaiting his response. What if he wouldn’t let me leave?
"Why do you want to leave? As far as I know, people outside want to kill you. If you go out, it’s only a dead end. Stay here, and no one can touch you."
That was his answer, one I never expected. He knew my situation, yet I knew nothing about him. But at least I knew one thing: he wouldn’t kill me. Although I didn’t understand why he wanted me to stay on the island,
After some thought, I cautiously replied, "Thank you for your kindness, but my husband is still missing. I need to find him, so I must go out."
My tone was so firm that even I was surprised. I didn’t expect that I cared so much about Mu Xuanche.
The man who was initially forced into a Ghost Marriage had already taken root in my heart.
Images of Mu Xuanche’s handsome face flashed through my mind, and unconsciously, I placed my hand on my belly, a smile curving at the corners of my mouth that felt sweet within.
"You can leave whenever you want; it's your choice,"
The Mysterious Island Master left with those words and walked out of the room. I didn’t chase after him.
Because I had already gotten what I wanted; pursuing further would be meaningless. Although I was curious about who he really was, it didn’t matter to me anymore.
I had woken up early on the Twenty-First and planned to return soon.
After I finished with the man, he showed no reaction at all and walked out with a machete in hand.
"Hey, where are you going?" I called after him.
He turned back and said, "I'm going to get the boat out and take you away."
"Thank you."
After expressing my gratitude, I returned to the house alone and sat in the backyard, enjoying the beautiful scenery.
The backyard had been cleared to make space for a patch of land filled with cosmos flowers, my favorite.
Each flower had six to eight petals, round and cheerful, resembling a smiling face—so adorable.
I asked the man if he had planted them. He replied that they were planted by the Island Master, whose partner loved cosmos flowers.
I was surprised that someone who seemed so cold as the Island Master could have such delicate thoughts.
Squatting beside the flowers, I inhaled their fragrance. Ever since the ritual that Liu Qingfeng performed for me was disrupted, various crises had arisen.
These three peaceful days were truly rare.
Suddenly, I heard rapid footsteps behind me. I quickly stood up and turned around to see the man running back, panting heavily as he waved frantically at me.
"What’s wrong?" I asked.
"Quick, come with me!"
Without answering, he grabbed my hand and pulled me along as we ran.
After returning to the Shack, he abruptly threw off the blanket and lifted the wooden board in the middle.
As I leaned closer, I discovered that there was a coffin underneath.
At the man's gesture, I climbed inside.
Perhaps he thought my movements were too slow; he hurriedly pressed me down and urgently instructed, "Remember, no matter what happens or what you hear, don't come out. Even if I die, don't come out."
Before I could react, he pushed me down, covering the bed board and leaving a small gap through which I could sense the outside.
Moments later, I heard very Rapid Footsteps.
The footsteps were particularly chaotic, suggesting that there were quite a few people.
What on earth was happening? Why was the man so anxious? And what did he mean by saying I shouldn't come out even if he died?
A loud bang echoed through the air, and even from my hiding place in the coffin beneath the bed, I could feel how intense the vibrations were.
I couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for the door; it must be in a terrible state right now.
"How dare you trespass on Qilin Island! Are you tired of living?"
That was the man's voice. So this island is called Qilin Island. Who had intruded to make him so nervous?
"He's just a servant. Tell your Island Master to come out; I have business with him."
The voice...
It was Shangguan Zili's voice. How did she get here? Could it be that she came to capture me?
I suppressed my curiosity and covered my mouth as I observed the outside, my heart pounding heavily.
"Ridiculous! What makes you think you can see the Island Master? If you want to meet the Island Master, you should call your leader here!"
From the tone of the man, he seemed to be angry.
"Hmph, you dog servant, just wait and see how I teach you a lesson," Shangguan Zili said arrogantly. It was not surprising to hear such words from her.
Through the gap, I could see that she was not alone; behind her were more than a dozen young men dressed in black, each holding weapons.
They looked quite young; I wondered how they ended up in such a cult organization.
Each of them had a menacing expression, and on the back of their hands was tattooed an inverted swastika.
At Shangguan Zili's command, those young men charged forward and began to attack the man.
The man wielded a long stick with immense strength. When he swung it, it seemed capable of sweeping away thousands of troops.
As he swung the stick, several young men fell to the ground. However, those young men rushed at him recklessly.
Seeing that they couldn't get close to him, they picked up stones from the ground and hurled them at him.
While resisting, the man shouted at Shangguan Zili, "Demoness! Our Qilin Island has always kept our distance from your Cult of Spirits. What right do you have to bully me?"
A cold smile flashed across Shangguan Zili's face. "As long as you hand over that wretched woman, I will let you go. We can continue to keep our distance."
Hiding in the coffin, I clenched my fists. If only my abilities weren't so low right now, I would rush out and tear this Wretch apart.
Why was she pressing me so hard, refusing to let me go? I hadn't done anything wrong.
I saw the man's expression change as he said to Shangguan Zili, "I don't know what you're talking about. We don't have anyone on Qilin Island."
"Hmph," Shangguan Zili snorted coldly, waving her hand. The others charged toward the man again.
The man was no match for the four of them; he simply couldn't handle the dozen or so youths.
One of the youths lunged at him, pinning him down. The man struggled to get up, but the other youths jumped on him all at once.
He was pressed down and unable to move, while those youths took the opportunity to punch and kick him.
No matter how strong he was, he couldn't withstand the relentless assault from so many people. In an instant, he was knocked down, his face bruised and blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.
The pain inside him was indescribable; he held back tears, not daring to cry out. Everything he did was for me.
When he could no longer resist, they finally stopped and dragged him in front of Shangguan Zili.
Her smile was piercing. At that moment, I wished I could rush out and carve her into a thousand pieces—this detestable woman.
But I was powerless; it was all my fault.
I continued to pay attention to the movements outside. Shangguan Zili squatted down with her back to me. I couldn't see her expression; I could only hear her voice.
"Where is that woman? Hand her over, and I'll let you go," he demanded.
The man's response remained the same: "I don't know."
Shangguan Zili stood up and waved to the side. A few of her subordinates pulled knives from their pockets.
She threatened the man, "From now on, every time I ask you a question, if your answer doesn't satisfy me, I'll cut off one of your fingers. Once I'm satisfied, I'll let you go."
"Cut off his thumb for me," she instructed one of her subordinates, who immediately crouched down to grasp the man's hand.
I couldn't hold back any longer; I had to rush out.
