Looking at the hopeful crowd, Su Ruolan suddenly felt the weight of responsibility on her shoulders. She began to discuss with the people, and they first reacted with shock, followed by joy and admiration, nodding repeatedly. Soon, they divided into several groups and quickly headed towards the Old Town District.
The Common Zombies found this strange; how could this group of once lifeless individuals suddenly regain vitality? They sent someone back to report. The White Zombie Leader, who was recovering its strength, disdainfully issued orders, "These ants are nothing to worry about. The key is that female Ability user. Keep an eye on her; we cannot let her escape."
A large group of Snow White Zombies mobilized.
Su Ruolan and Monet positioned themselves to block the zombies at the central square, the only open area in Zone Five. The vast city landmark square could accommodate five thousand people. Beyond that lay the narrow Old Town District.
The Zombie nest was where the Mutated Zombies first broke out. Most of the zombies in Zone Five originated from Hongfu District and its secondary and tertiary infected individuals. Therefore, the zombies were no longer scattered and chaotic as before; they were relatively organized and concentrated. The White Zombie Leader was essentially the Zombie King of Zone Five.
Su Ruolan and Monet, one human and one wolf, faced off against the massive horde of zombies. Su Ruolan unleashed a technique called "Single Tree Becomes Forest," causing countless long Wood Vines to entwine around the Snow White Zombies. Although the Snow White Zombies jumped quickly, the Wood Vines seemed to possess their own consciousness, slithering after them with precision. Su Ruolan yanked them down from above and slammed them onto the ground with a loud thud. Monet stood nearby, unleashing sharp wind blades to swiftly reap their heads. The synergy between Su Ruolan and Monet was seamless; one by one, zombie skulls rolled away. Monet used a whirlwind to send batches of Snow White Zombie heads to the back of the Old Town District. At the alley entrance, some women had fashioned a large net from old bedsheets, looking up eagerly for their catch. As a batch of Snow White Zombie heads fell into their net, they quickly took them away and awaited another batch. This continued back and forth until nearly a hundred Snow White Zombies were eliminated.
During the battle, Su Ruolan gradually dissipated her previously stagnant energy channels, feeling more invigorated. Monet's mastery of Wind Elemental Power became increasingly refined; often, minimal effort yielded maximum results. As more zombies appeared, people from other areas began to converge upon this location.
Despite Su Ruolan's high Ability level, she could not withstand such a relentless onslaught of zombies in a war of attrition. Her complexion flushed red as her mouth filled with a metallic taste of blood. The time it took for the surrounding water to restore energy grew longer; what once replenished all her energy instantly now only restored four-fifths, then half, with the speed continuing to decline. Monet's Ability also suffered severe depletion; she bore multiple scrapes and wounds, bright red blood staining her silver-gray fur.
In a relatively secluded residence behind them, Kong Xiang anxiously watched seventy-eight members of the Suicide Squad seated with closed eyes absorbing Zombie Crystals, silently urging them on: "Come on, hurry up!"
Finally, Su Ruolan's Wood Vines could no longer maintain their blockade as some Snow White Zombies and Common Zombies broke through their defenses.
Inside the residence, suddenly one Suicide Squad Member turned beet red, veins bulging at his temples before he violently spat out blood and collapsed to the ground in failure. Soon after, over forty more members failed to absorb their cores and fell over coughing up blood. The guards nearby felt their hearts drop into their stomachs. Kong Xiang stealthily left for a moment before returning to continue guarding them.
At that moment, the Snow White Zombies and Common Zombies had already entered the alleys of the Old Town District, searching for the scent of fresh human flesh. Due to the dense housing and high population density in the Old Town District, the smell of human flesh was particularly strong. The zombies felt as if there were people everywhere, but often found empty rooms upon pushing open doors. After wandering around for a while, they began to feel puzzled.
When they pushed open another door and found no one inside, they instinctively prepared to leave. Suddenly, a blanket was thrown over them, and several ordinary people jumped out, wielding rolling pins and cutting boards, striking the zombies on their heads with fierce blows that knocked them unconscious. When the first ordinary person, a determined girl named Cheng Xi, swung her trembling yet resolute kitchen knife to decapitate a Common Zombie, everyone present underwent a spiritual trial and baptism. It turned out that not only Ability users and the military could kill zombies; ordinary people could do so as well. Only by summoning the courage to resist could they save themselves.
Such scenes unfolded in countless rooms. In the Old Town District, where houses were closely packed together, successful teams would immediately move on to another residence. The Common Zombies, relying solely on scent to track humans, often moved too slowly. This narrow environment was also unfavorable for the Snow White Zombies; without the ability to run quickly or leap for surprise attacks, their advantages were diminished. However, there were still many zombies, emerging endlessly and tirelessly, with combat strength far superior to that of humans. While ordinary people could kill zombies, their numbers were limited; their main roles were to distract and confuse the zombies while buying time. More ordinary people continued to retreat toward Zone Four.
Countless ordinary people fought bravely while many fell victim to death—killed and eaten in their final moments. Some looked toward Su Ruolan or back toward the Old Town District with longing yet hopeful gazes, their hearts filled with a single thought: "Keep going!"
Watching as blood trickled from Su Ruolan's lips and her hands hung weakly at her sides while her back remained straight, the White Zombie Leader slowly approached. A water arrow shot toward Su Ruolan, striking her left arm and instantly corroding a large patch of skin as blood gushed forth.
Another water arrow hit her right arm, creating yet another bloody hole.
Two more water arrows struck her left leg and right leg respectively. Su Ruolan stumbled back a few steps, nearly falling.
The speed and force of the water arrows were so great that the nearly exhausted Su Ruolan could not evade them; she could only endure the blows.
Ordinary people captured by the zombies watched this scene with tears streaming down their faces. Some who struggled against their captors were immediately pierced through the heart by the zombies' sharp claws.
At that moment, dozens of headless Snow White Zombie corpses were suddenly flung from behind as nearly thirty Ability users emerged—men and women of all ages—previously ordinary people who had successfully absorbed the cores of Snow White Zombies and awakened their abilities.
Next to Su Ruolan, space suddenly twisted as Kong Xiang appeared, whispering: "We have succeeded without fail; all of the first batch of awakened Ability users are here except for those on guard duty. The second batch is currently absorbing cores. Sister, your plan was truly effective; we have succeeded."
So you were stalling for time? Realizing this, the White Zombie Leader became enraged; thinking it was in control of the situation, it had not expected to be outmaneuvered by others. Since this troublesome human woman was such a nuisance, it decided to eliminate her once and for all. With a wave of its hand and a series of hisses directed at several Snow White Zombies, they understood and charged forward with the Common Zombies toward both the crowd and deeper into the Old Town District.
This was truly a battle of life and death. Each Snow White Zombie acted as a Zombie Captain for a specific area, coordinating with one another. As soon as they spotted a crowd, they charged in to encircle and eliminate them. The first batch of Ability users awakened by absorbing Zombie Crystals also targeted the Snow White Zombies and engaged in combat. Although the Snow White Zombies were all speed-type Ability users, the abilities of the awakened humans varied; they included Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water types, along with Power Type and Wind Type. Ordinary people picked up various tools from their homes and formed groups of three to five to fight against the Common Zombies. This marked the first large-scale participation of civilians in Zombie battles in four years since the apocalypse, leaving a glorious page in history.
Seeing that the situation was not unfolding as he had anticipated, the White Zombie Leader grew somewhat agitated and sent a column of water crashing toward the Ability users in the crowd.
"Azure Dragon Plays in Water!" Su Ruolan shouted loudly as a tornado appeared, swirling around to absorb the water column unleashed by the White Zombie Leader, dissipating its force and redirecting it elsewhere. "Your opponent is me."
The White Zombie Leader turned his head to see Su Ruolan standing confidently in her Wolf-Shaped Battle Boots, her long hair billowing behind her. Her narrow phoenix eyes sparkled with rebellious provocation as she pointed at herself with a delicate finger and beckoned, "You, come here."
