In the Ninth Floor room, Jackson Wang peered incredulously behind Qin Zhi Han as he returned alone.
"Company Commander, where do you think Sister Su will go? It's not safe for her to be out there alone in these chaotic times," Bai Zhen expressed his concern.
"I don't know. She seems like a determined person and probably has her own plans. But having Squad on her tail is not a good sign," Qin Zhi Han shook his head, a hint of doubt flashing in his deep-set eyes.
"That infamous Squad? The one that brutally murdered the pregnant wife of the Huaxia Society's Vice Captain two years ago, decapitating her and disemboweling her, turning her into meat paste, causing a public uproar?" Jackson Wang exclaimed loudly.
"The Squad became notorious because of that incident. A few years back, the Huaxia Society suddenly gained traction, forming an army to combat Zombies and attracting many civilians to join. How could the government allow civilian armed forces to exist? Even now, with the Zombie threat, the government doesn't have as tight a grip on local areas as before, but they won't tolerate anyone challenging their authority. It’s only natural for them to crack down on the Huaxia Society. However, what they did to that woman was too much and sparked great public outrage. Why are they here? Why are they targeting Sister Su?" Bai Zhen pondered in confusion.
"What's so strange about it? Others may not know, but I have some insight into the Squad," Zhang Yu scoffed in response to Xu Qiubai's puzzled expression. "After the apocalypse began, the higher-ups established this squad to strengthen control over the populace. Initially, it was just meant to monitor provincial officials and local public sentiment, with the power to report and execute those who were negligent or disloyal. Later on, well, it became a tool for certain individuals to eliminate rivals and vie for power. They must have noticed something unusual about Su Ruolan and want to capture her—either to persuade her to join the Squad or send her to G City Base, where they're reportedly researching an Antidote for Zombies."
"Young Commander, given how turbulent things are right now, you need to plan ahead," Xu Bo said earnestly.
"I suggest we return to S Base as soon as possible. The two Commanders here in Jiang Zhu are at odds with each other; their conflict has become quite sharp. The Zombie forces outside remain strong, and if they besiege the city again, we won't be as fortunate as we were this time. Once they exhaust each other in battle with the Zombies, we can step in and take over; the remaining civilians will surely turn towards us at S Base. It would also effectively cut off one of Jiang Zhilin's arms," Xu Qiubai's pale complexion gave him a gloomy air; although his suggestion was sound, it always carried a hint of bloodshed.
"We need both territory and people—especially ordinary folks. Arrange for First Battalion's elite members in the city; they shouldn't engage in combat but should organize civilians to evacuate to safety if necessary. We must hold out until reinforcements arrive," Zhang Yu asserted decisively after some thought.
On the Ninth Floor, Qin Zhi Han, Bai Zhen, and Jackson Wang sat on the sofa discussing the surrounding situation while looking at a map.
"Company Commander, don't you think Colonel Zhu has changed a bit? He seems somewhat indifferent towards both you and the civilians lately," Bai Zhen remarked.
"I've seen enough; Colonel Zhu is weak and can't hold up the big picture. Following him leads nowhere. Now that Colonel Jiang sees our unit as a thorn in his side, he keeps issuing orders relentlessly; our team hasn't had any rest on the battlefield for a long time. He's trying to wear us down," Jackson Wang replied indignantly.
At that moment, someone knocked on the door outside.
"Come in," Bai Zhen said.
"Company Commander, Instructor, you're all here. Hurry and save Meng Squad Leader," Jiang Wei reported, feeling strange about suddenly fainting in the stairwell and waking up without understanding why. He didn't dare to make a fuss and quickly recounted what had happened earlier.
As soon as Qin Zhi Han heard this, he immediately stood up, and the three of them rushed to the scene.
In the wartime logistics office, a group of soldiers were fighting among themselves. Those already injured had sustained new wounds, their faces bruised and swollen. Fortunately, they knew to hold back and did not use their abilities; it was purely a matter of fists and feet clashing.
"Why aren't you dispersing? Is there no organization or discipline left?" Bai Zhen shouted as soon as he arrived.
Seeing their Company Commander on the scene, the members of Wolf Squad gradually dispersed, each one filled with indignation.
At that moment, Jiang Yan also arrived at the scene.
"Boss, the War Wolves are beating us up," reported a disheveled member of Cheetah Squad.
Shilei and the others found it amusing; clearly, they had been the ones to injure Meng Squad Leader first, yet they were the ones complaining. They all began to recount the events, asking Qin Zhi Han to take charge.
"Where is Meng Squad Leader?" Qin Zhi Han asked.
"Right here," a member of Wolf Squad said as he helped the severely injured Meng Squad Leader over.
"You, what exactly happened?" Qin Zhi Han asked coldly.
Meng Squad Leader lifted his drooping head and glanced at Qin Zhi Han with a complex expression before suddenly saying, "Company Commander, they wouldn't give us any medical supplies. I couldn't hold back and started fighting. I didn't expect things to spiral out of control afterward; I was wrong."
"You all heard it; he struck first and even killed one of our team members. How do we settle this score?"
"Exactly, we're not pushovers either."
"Not killing him was already a favor; what a piece of work."
Upon hearing the details, the members of the Cheetah Squad were filled with righteous indignation, their emotions running high.
The Wolf Brigade members were stunned; someone had actually died. The atmosphere turned silent as they looked at Meng Squad Leader with disbelief in their eyes. Especially Shilei, who usually had the best relationship with Meng Squad Leader, exclaimed loudly, "Old Meng, you're not that kind of person. What on earth happened?"
"I'm sorry, Company Commander, I'm sorry, brothers. I will bear the consequences of my mistakes myself." Suddenly, Meng Squad Leader drew his gun and took his own life.
In an instant, everyone was dumbfounded. Only Jiang Yan continued to laugh heartily.
"Qin Zhi Han, it was your people who made the mistake. Even though one of them is dead, I still expect you to send compensation later. Otherwise, with so many injuries on my side, this matter won't end so easily. Keep your subordinates in check and stop being so self-important." Jiang Yan sneered before turning away with his team.
Under the setting sun, a group of Wolf Squad members stood frozen, staring at Meng Squad Leader lying in a pool of blood. Some were in disbelief, others were agitated and furious, while some wore solemn expressions; their spirits seemed to be deflated.
Before long, news spread throughout the city about the provocation and murder of Cheetah Squad members by the Wolf Squad. The public buzzed with discussions; the uninformed War Wolves were disorganized and reckless, wantonly killing heroes who saved lives. Many members of the War Wolves came from the City Guard and had a rough background, unable to shake off their inherent savagery. Some argued that such a unit should be restructured; however, a small number remained skeptical, feeling there was more to the story. Yet these voices were drowned out by the overwhelming tide of public opinion.
At this moment, Su Ruolan had already slipped out of the city amidst the chaos and was completely unaware of these events. She gazed at the golden horizon illuminated by the setting sun, her heart filled with joy. "Runzhou, here I come."
