Eerie Trees attacked the Second Company, claiming nearly ten lives in an instant. Everyone's eyes were bloodshot with grief and anger.
"Everyone, retreat quickly! I'll cover you!" Su Ruolan shouted urgently.
The group fought while retreating, eventually escaping the dense forest. Once they emerged, the trees ceased their assault, and tranquility returned, making it hard to believe a massacre had just occurred.
"This has never happened before. What is going on?" Wang Zhi's expression was grave, filled with worry.
"After the apocalypse, animals mutated. I didn't expect plants to do the same. Humanity's living conditions have become even harsher," Su Ruolan briefly explained the situation outside.
"This news is terrible. I need to report back immediately. Ruo Lan, could you keep an eye on things? If anything unusual happens, send someone to report back. Please," Wang Zhi said earnestly, looking at Su Ruolan.
"Understood," Su Ruolan replied. She gazed at the vast mountains and wondered how to find the Mutated Tree.
"Sister Su, these trees are strange. My Gold System Ability is suppressed and can't function properly," Cheng Xi remarked.
"Yes, not only that; they also absorb energy," Su Ruolan said, frowning lightly.
"Ruo Lan, we absorbed the meteorite energy from Bat Cave, and this area has lost its protection. The mutated elements from outside are spreading in; soon this environment will undergo significant changes," Reset affirmed.
Realizing she had indirectly contributed to this tragedy made Su Ruolan feel guilty.
"Ruo Lan, if it weren't you, it would be someone else. Besides, the meteorite's energy has been largely depleted; even if we hadn't come, it wouldn't last much longer. The apocalypse won't allow this place to remain a paradise," Reset comforted her upon sensing her low spirits.
"Ruo Lan, you're a dual-type Ability user; that's impressive," Li Yuxuan said admiringly as he looked at Su Ruolan.
Seeing the young man's sincere face without a hint of malice, Su Ruolan smiled slightly and nodded gently.
At that moment, Wang Zhi led a group of soldiers over. "What's going on?"
"Once we exited the forest, the branches stopped attacking," Li Yuxuan replied.
"I brought a team of Fire Elemental Users; we must eliminate this monster," Wang Zhi said, waving his hand as a group followed him into the dense woods.
Su Ruolan felt something was off but couldn't pinpoint it, so she decided to follow along.
The group re-entered the forest, remaining highly alert. Suddenly, the leaves began to shake again, and branches attacked from all directions. This time, the branches were thicker and longer.
"This is bad; it has grown again," Su Ruolan exclaimed in surprise, noticing the Mutated Tree had undergone significant changes in a short time.
The Fire Elemental Users quickly unleashed fireballs, dozens of them flying through the woods. The attacking branches retreated upon contact with the flames, though they were not burned. Sparks scattered on the ground ignited fallen leaves and other dry twigs, causing flames to rise with the wind and thick smoke to billow.
"Quickly put out the fire!" Su Ruolan urged as she summoned several jets of water to douse the burning forest. The Earth Elemental User hurriedly formed mounds of earth to extinguish the flames. Amidst the chaos, branches struck with lightning speed, claiming several lives once more.
"Kong Xiang, cover me," Su Ruolan said as she assessed the situation and decided to find the Core of the Mutated Tree to cut off its source of power.
Kong Xiang activated his invisibility ability, cloaking both himself and Su Ruolan. She tapped into her Wood Elemental Ability, sensing the energy source of the Mutated Tree. Countless dark green energy points gathered on the attacking branches. Simplifying her focus, she traced back to find a basketball-sized Energy Core hidden within a century-old tree. Countless energy points emanated from it and continuously flowed back, creating a phenomenon where a single tree appeared as a forest around it.
This is it! Su Ruolan thought joyfully. "Kong Xiang, let's move in that direction."
The two cautiously approached within range of the massive tree. The branches seemed to sense their intrusion but did not make contact with their warm bodies; instead, they writhed anxiously around them like snakes, stretching and coiling in an exploratory manner.
They were getting closer to the trunk of the Mutated Tree—only twenty meters away now. The tree seemed extremely agitated; nearby branches formed dense spikes in front of its trunk, resembling a porcupine.
"Stay alert," Su Ruolan instructed Kong Xiang before stepping out of their concealed area. She conjured countless Ice Spikes and unleashed a "Rain of Ice" upon the branches. The severed branches lost their energy gradually, infuriating the trunk that was deprived of sustenance. Countless branches lashed out at Su Ruolan with great force; if struck, she would not only be injured but might even lose her life.
Su Ruolan concentrated her energy, summoning countless Ice Swords that pierced directly into the core of the tree trunk.
Almost simultaneously, ten Ice Swords struck the core of the trunk; Su Ruolan was hit by a branch and had her neck ensnared, causing her to dangle in mid-air. The Ice Swords continued to freeze the trunk, while the branch tightening around Su Ruolan's neck increased its grip.
Su Ruolan realized she was on the verge of losing her breath and unable to call out to Monet in the space, as if their connection had been severed.
Kong Xiang was isolated outside by branches that formed a barrier. Wang Zhi and the others were still entangled with the surrounding branches and could not break free in time, unaware of the dire situation unfolding here.
A burning pain throbbed at her neck, and Su Ruolan's vision began to darken as she felt the Mutated Tree continuously draining her energy.
A bolt of lightning struck down, swiftly severing the branch that was constricting Su Ruolan's neck. As she fell, she felt someone catch her. Her vision blurred, but she struggled to open her eyes wide. "Why do you always look so disheveled when I see you?" came a gentle sigh.
A series of five bolts of lightning, as thick as an adult's arm, quickly struck the Mutated Tree. Qin Zhi Han acted out of anger, and the Mutated Tree immediately turned black and withered, losing all vitality.
He gently helped Su Ruolan stand on her feet. "That's what you get for bullying me." Su Ruolan conjured an Ice Sword and swiftly cleaved through the trunk, extracting the greenish-black core and stowing it away in her backpack, completely eliminating any chance for the Mutated Tree to revive.
"You never forget your backpack wherever you go; it's almost become your trademark. But it seems like everything fits inside it—just like Doraemon's pocket," Qin Zhi Han teased.
Seeing Qin Zhi Han again made Su Ruolan very happy. "What brings you here?"
"We can talk about that later. Are you alright?" Qin Zhi Han's gaze darkened as he noticed the red mark around Su Ruolan's neck.
At that moment, the branches that had formed a barrier fell limp to the ground, and Wang Zhi and the others finally managed to break free from their entanglement and rushed over.
"Ruo Lan, are you okay?" Li Yuxuan asked with concern.
"Sister Su/Sister Ruo Lan, are you alright?" Kong Xiang and Cheng Xi chimed in unison as they approached.
"Fortunately, I arrived in time; she's fine." Qin Zhi Han glanced at Li Yuxuan and Kong Xiang before turning to Su Ruolan. "I have some healing ointment; come with me."
"Sister Ruo Lan, you're injured. Hurry back and apply some medicine," Kong Xiang urged, secretly cursing himself for not having taken Su Ruolan to the Tree Surface earlier, putting her in danger.
"It's nothing; you did your best," Su Ruolan comforted, noticing Kong Xiang's guilt.
Thanks to her healing ability, no matter how severe the injury, as long as she was still alive, she could recover. In front of everyone, Su Ruolan worried that her wound would heal too quickly, so she hurried back with Qin Zhi Han.
"Ruo Lan, are you okay?" Reset's voice suddenly rang out.
"Master, are you alright?" Monet asked anxiously.
"I'm fine. What just happened? I sensed your presence but couldn't summon you," Su Ruolan communicated with Reset and the others in her mind.
"I didn't hear your call. Zero Boss, did you?" Monet asked in confusion.
"I didn't either," Reset replied, equally puzzled.
"How foolish! That's because the person who just came had something strange about him," Bat King suddenly huffed, looking quite proud.
It seemed that Qin Zhi Han had his own share of encounters. Su Ruolan watched the tall, slender figure walking ahead, a hint of confusion reflected in her eyes.
