Looking at Jiang Yan, who exuded no killing intent, Qin Zhi Han and Su Ruolan exchanged glances, their hearts racing.
"Brother, Sister, do you want to play house with me? Yay, I want to play, I want to play!" Jiang Yan clapped his hands in excitement, raising his bright eyes to look at Qin and Su. His gaze was pure, devoid of any impurities.
Qin Zhi Han quickly moved in front of Jiang Yan, reaching out to grasp his pulse for examination. Jiang Yan was completely defenseless, obediently allowing Qin Zhi Han to circulate energy within him. When he encountered a blockage, he frowned in pain, pouting slightly and saying aggrievedly, "Brother, you hurt me."
"His meridians are quite chaotic and blocked, and it seems he has suffered severe injuries with significant energy depletion," Qin Zhi Han said as he released Jiang Yan's hand. He turned to Su Ruolan and added, "It’s likely that he was hit by a backlash when he used his last move."
Su Ruolan suddenly recalled the devouring energy she had released onto the ground when she left Five Finger Peak; perhaps it had played a role in this situation. Regardless, finding the last assassin could buy time before Qin Zhi Han's secrets and the base were exposed.
"When will he regain consciousness?" Su Ruolan asked.
"It’s hard to say. I’ll take him back to H Base. I'm sorry; I can't escort you anymore. You should head back," Qin Zhi Han said, having to alter their original plan due to the unexpected circumstances.
"Alright." Su Ruolan understood that they could not afford any more delays. She turned and began walking up the mountain. Unbeknownst to her, Qin Zhi Han remained behind, watching her retreating figure until she completely disappeared from view. Only when he saw a silhouette enter the checkpoint at the distant mountain peak did he lift Jiang Yan by the collar and leave.
Meanwhile, Su Ruolan and Li Yuxuan prepared to set off again. Looking back at the base surrounded by mountains, Su Ruolan silently vowed that she would bring them good news soon.
"We're finally going out!" Cheng Xi exclaimed joyfully. Despite having endured a painful life, her inherent brightness could not be extinguished.
Kong Xiang's eyes sparkled with an unusual light, but he buried his excitement deep within. It turned out that he still carried the legacy of a military family within him—so passionate and impulsive.
Su Ruolan led everyone toward B City Base in the north. The journey from the base to B City Base required crossing fifteen major mountains and nine large rivers. Commander Ma had arranged three vehicles: one was the jeep originally driven by Su Ruolan, while the other two were requisitioned spoils from Squad operations. With Su Ruolan in the lead and Li Yuxuan bringing up the rear, the three vehicles formed a line as they advanced along the winding mountain road.
Monet was feeling bored in the space, so Su Ruolan decided to let it out. It ran freely along the mountain ridge beside the convoy, heading in the same direction as the vehicles.
"Master, there are a large number of Zombies ahead. Stay alert," Monet suddenly communicated in her mind.
"Stop the car," Su Ruolan signaled outside the window, and the vehicles behind her gradually came to a halt.
"What’s wrong, Su Squad Leader?" Li Yuxuan asked as she got out of the car.
"A large group of Zombies has been spotted ahead; we can't go around them. Prepare for battle," Su Ruolan ordered. "Monet, how many Zombies are there approximately? What levels are they, and how long until they arrive?"
"There are about 100 of them, with around 50 at Second Level; the rest are First Level. At their speed, they will reach us in half an hour at most," Monet replied. Its level was far superior to that of these Zombies, allowing it to easily sense their mutated state. It gazed into the distance while estimating.
"There are about 100 Zombies, including some Second-Level ones. We can't take them on alone. They should arrive in about half an hour; we need to set up an ambush quickly," Su Ruolan urged.
Everyone was surprised by how detailed Su Ruolan's understanding of the Zombie situation was, but time was pressing, and this wasn't the best moment for questions. Adhering to a mindset of obedience and cautious trust, everyone quickly sprang into action.
Li Yuxuan's team consisted of ten members, all under 25 years old. Except for Li Yuxuan, who had awakened Earth-type Ability, the others were ordinary soldiers. Before the apocalypse, some were chefs, others doctors, farmers, or teachers. After entering the military due to their proficiency in shooting and close combat during the apocalypse, they were assigned to the guard unit. In the eyes of regular troops, they were considered a ragtag group but were already elite within their base.
Su Ruolan and her team didn't have much ammunition, so they relied heavily on the terrain. Fortunately, this mountain road was exceptionally narrow with steep cliffs on either side. As long as they held their ground at this passageway, it would be like a single warrior guarding against thousands. The group took their positions according to plan and waited for the Zombies to enter their trap.
Lying on the mountain ridge, they watched as a large group of Zombies staggered toward them. One particularly alert Snow White Zombie sniffed the air as if it had caught a whiff of something unusual. Li Yuxuan and her team broke out in a cold sweat at this sight. They glanced at Su Ruolan's calm demeanor and each tried to maintain their composure; they couldn't let a girl outshine them. This was their first time facing such a large number of Zombies alone—both fear and excitement coursed through them.
"Move out." As soon as the Zombies entered the designated area, Su Ruolan commanded softly. Li Yuxuan and her team immediately began tossing down large nets—an idea inspired by what Su Ruolan had seen from the Wolf Brigade during their last battle in Zone Five. They had crafted several nets from Wood Vine and infused them with a hint of Devouring Ability. As expected, those caught in the nets—especially the Second-Level Zombies—suddenly became weak and lethargic as if paralyzed when they attempted to use their abilities to tear through the nets.
At that moment, Li Yuxuan and the others felt a surge of confidence. They quickly activated a mechanism, and wooden stakes hidden in the nearby forest shot out rapidly, their sharp tips piercing into the bodies of the slow-moving First-Level Zombies. Nearly ten of them were struck, some even sent tumbling off the cliff. The Second-Level Zombies also detected the presence of Su Ruolan and her group, leaping and charging up the mountainside.
A barrage of bullets rained down like a flowing river. Initially, some bullets missed due to unfamiliarity with the speed of the Second-Level Zombies, but most found their marks, hitting heads or necks. The Second-Level Zombies rolled down from halfway up the mountain. Lacking any thought, the Zombies felt no fear; they were instinctively drawn to the fresh human flesh, driven by an intense desire to feed. The surviving Zombies continued their fierce assault.
Su Ruolan and Li Yuxuan set off a second wave of traps, sending tree trunks rolling down the slope, crushing another batch of Zombies and breaking their skulls as they tumbled down the cliff alongside the fallen logs.
At this moment, the fastest Second-Level Zombie, moving like lightning, was already in mid-air, about to land on the trench where Su Ruolan and her group were hiding. Su Ruolan unleashed countless Ice Spikes aimed at its brain. Suddenly, the trench they had hastily dug rose by a foot as if a wall had appeared before the airborne Zombie. Losing its footing, the Second-Level Zombie fell backward and crashed to the ground.
"Thank you," Su Ruolan praised Li Yuxuan. The young man had made rapid progress and seemed to have mastered offensive tactics.
Facing the Second-Level Zombies that were gradually climbing into the trench, some members of the group pulled out frying pans, others brandished scalpels, while some wielded firearms to fight back. Although the Zombies moved quickly, they could not match the teamwork of Su Ruolan's group and were systematically taken down. Su Ruolan aimed to hone this team further and instructed Monet to flank them from the side. When Li Yuxuan and his companions spotted a giant wolf appearing, they were terrified and nearly fell prey to a Zombie; fortunately, they were saved by a gust of wind from Monet's wind blades. As those blades sliced overhead, they thought their lives were over but realized that the giant wolf was there to protect them.
Su Ruolan and Cheng Xi bore about 80% of the responsibility for eliminating the Second-Level Zombies, significantly easing the pressure on Li Yuxuan and his team.
Su Ruolan first used her Wood Elemental Ability to bind a Second-Level Zombie before striking its forehead with an Ice Spike, ensuring that not a single one escaped; in her eyes, these creatures represented her assurance of survival.
Cheng Xi spread her fingers wide as a volley of bullets flew through the air directly toward a Second-Level Zombie's head. After several rounds of practice, she had slowly grasped the relationship between air dynamics and bullet trajectories, achieving an 80% hit rate with each shot. However, due to her Ability's low level, she could only fire a limited number of times consecutively.
Su Ruolan did not expect this battle to go so smoothly; they had annihilated all Zombies with less than fifteen times their strength. Kong Xiang instructed Li Yuxuan to extract all the cores and hand them over to Su Ruolan. Following their earlier agreement based on the principle of "those who eliminate benefit," they distributed them uniformly. Su Ruolan quietly purified all the cores using Spatial Water before distributing them according to their agreement. Although others received only one core each—except for Li Yuxuan—they were all very pleased, fully aware that such opportunities would never come their way in a base setting. They expressed deep gratitude towards Su Ruolan for her generosity.
