“Young Commander, it's time,” Xu Qiubai stepped forward to report to Zhang Yu.
“Hmm. Since he has made his choice, I have done my part. Attack,” Zhang Yu stood up, adjusted his collar, and looked at the walls of H Base, decisively giving the order.
Dozens of cannons fired, each shell bursting forth from the barrels, tracing parabolic arcs in the air before crashing down into the city and upon the walls, striking at the military facilities and supply stations within.
The sound of cannon fire echoed, smoke billowing everywhere. On the walls, Qin Zhi Han led a counterattack. He hadn’t expected Zhang Yu to bring so many cannons, determined to reclaim H Base at any cost. With his sharp features more pronounced and his sword-like brows furrowed, Qin Zhi Han decisively said to Wang Zhi, “Company Commander, please report immediately and ask Commander Ma to lead everyone in a swift retreat. We will cover for them and buy some time for everyone to evacuate.”
The Company Commander looked at the formation set up by Zhang Yu and his men across from them, knowing that victory was impossible. He nodded and turned to sprint towards the temporary command post.
Standing on the construction site of the city walls, Qin Zhi Han solemnly addressed the remaining team members at the base, saying, “Brothers of the Fourth Regiment, if you have elderly at home, step forward; if you are the only child at home, step forward; if you are under eighteen, step forward.”
The soldiers exchanged glances; some hesitated and slowly stepped out.
“Now, you will immediately find Company Commander and follow the main force to relocate,” Qin Zhi Han said calmly after glancing at them.
“Yes.” Though reluctant in expression, these soldiers still strictly obeyed orders and quickly left in formation.
Qin Zhi Han looked at the fewer than fifty soldiers who remained and said, “If anyone else wants to leave, you may step forward.”
All the soldiers stood tall with fiery spirits, not a single one stepping out.
Qin Zhi Han slightly nodded as he gazed at their youthful faces. Suddenly filled with a surge of passion, he declared, “Brothers, staying here could very well mean certain death. I know you are all idealistic, courageous individuals with fighting spirit. If that’s the case, let us fight for our families and for our beliefs. Let’s make this battle a glorious one.”
“Victory! Victory!” all the soldiers shouted loudly.
Qin Zhi Han assigned tasks to everyone, and each Ability user fully utilized their roles.
When another batch of bombs flew toward H Base, they suddenly encountered an energy shield above the city, which firmly blocked their trajectory and caused them to bounce back toward their origin.
As Zhang Yu and the others saw the shells turning around and heading back toward them, they were taken aback.
“Young Commander, it's dangerous! Please hide quickly.” Xu Qiubai rushed forward to protect Zhang Yu, shielding his forehead with his hand.
“What kind of reverse weapon has Qin Zhi Han obtained? His luck is just too good,” Zhang Yu thought, feeling a mix of admiration and jealousy toward Qin Zhi Han.
After dodging the bombardment, Zhang Yu saw casualties among his troops and couldn't help but feel furious. “Attack! Fire again!” he shouted, refusing to believe they could still be that lucky.
Another wave of bombs shot toward H Base, still hitting the invisible energy shield in the air. The returning bombs injured a portion of Zhang Yu's forces once again.
With a cold glint in his eyes, Zhang Yu declared, “Bring it on!”
The third wave of bombs was launched at H Base. This time, they finally shattered the energy shield in the air and fell into the city, but there was no explosion. What was happening?
At H Base, Qin Zhi Han was feeling extremely strained. He had just activated his Ability and formed an elemental net with several other Ability users. Although it was their first attempt, it had succeeded and shown clear effects. However, the energy array consumed a tremendous amount of power; after blocking two strikes, it could no longer hold up.
Fortunately, earlier, Su Ruolan had given Qin Zhi Han a bottle of spatial water. He distributed a sip to everyone, instantly replenishing their depleted energy and reviving them. Just then, the third wave of bombs arrived; there was no time to reinforce the energy shield, so they could only resort to a muddy battle.
Qin Zhi Han activated his Lightning Ability, using electromagnetic interference to control the flight path and landing points of the bombs. He used attraction to pull all the bombs into a net made of lightning. Slowly flying at low altitude, he moved to an unoccupied square near some abandoned buildings before collectively detonating them. The explosion lit up the sky and flattened everything within several kilometers.
Feeling as if all his strength had been drained from his body, Qin Zhi Han realized his Ability had been overdrawn. After drinking the last of the water from the bottle, he gradually regained his strength. His head throbbed painfully, his vision blurred, and he tasted blood in his mouth as he swayed and stood up to continue walking toward the city gate.
“Are you alright?” a deep male voice echoed in Qin Zhi Han's mind.
"Fortunately, I can still hold on," Qin Zhi Han replied. "Cyan Flame, it's not the final moment yet; you don't need to appear."
Zhang Yu furrowed his brow as he saw a column of explosive waves rushing up. He raised his hand in a stopping gesture. After thinking for a moment and glancing at the darkening sky in the distance, he made a decisive call. "Charge, everyone attack!"
"Yes, Young Commander," Xu Qiubai immediately relayed the order. Thousands of soldiers surged forward like a tide, shouting as they rushed toward the city gate.
At that moment, Qin Zhi Han had just returned to the battlefield at the city gate. "Captain, you're back! Are you alright?" "Captain, are you okay?" The forty soldiers of the Fourth Regiment asked in unison, with nearly ten soldiers having overexerted their abilities and unable to awaken again.
"I'm fine. Can you all continue fighting?" Qin Zhi Han looked at the few warriors who would never open their eyes again and removed his hat, bowing his head in silent tribute for a minute. Then he surveyed the area and shouted loudly, "Tell me, can you still fight? Would you rather die in battle than retreat?"
"We can! We'd rather die in battle than retreat!" The remaining soldiers of the Fourth Regiment raised their rifles high and shouted.
"Good, let them taste our power," Qin Zhi Han encouraged everyone, determination shining in his eyes.
The soldiers of S Base charged toward the city wall while firing wildly. As they entered the Iron Thorns thicket, the soldiers of the Fourth Regiment suddenly unleashed their abilities. The Iron Thorns grew wildly, piercing through the bodies of the soldiers and causing rivers of blood to flow. As thousands of soldiers climbed over corpses to reach the city wall, Qin Zhi Han and the ability users launched a combined skill that drenched the wall with water and summoned lightning, causing a large number of soldiers to fall.
The soldiers donned gloves and foot wraps to continue climbing upward when suddenly they saw dark clouds ahead filled with endless skeletons staring at them with eerie ferocity, tearing at their flesh and souls—undying and unyielding. At the same time, scenes of their loved ones' tragic deaths replayed in front of them alongside nightmares buried deep within their souls. All resistance was abandoned as despair washed over them; they fell straight from the city wall, shattering bones and limbs upon impact.
For a moment, H Base's city wall became a hell on earth. Zhang Yu watched in horror as he lost his voice completely.
At that moment, all forty soldiers of the Fourth Regiment had perished. A man wrapped in black suddenly appeared out of nowhere, scooping up the unconscious Qin Zhi Han and vanishing into a distant alley.
