Zhan Yixiao brought Wei to his original residence in Zone Two, which was adjacent to the former city government location. It was situated at the core of the entire base, with convenient transportation and surrounded by many residential areas, hospitals, supermarkets, parks, and other complete facilities.
Seeing Wei's tattered clothes, Zhan Yixiao instructed the Zombie Squad Leader to find some clothes and human food and bring them over. Watching Wei struggle to eat bread, her face unusually flushed, Zhan Yixiao felt an overwhelming sense of worry. He called for the Squad Leader to find a doctor.
Since becoming a Zombie, he had lost his ability to breathe, his heartbeat, and body temperature. He was deeply concerned about Wei but could not assess her condition.
Knock, knock, knock. The door was knocked on, and soon after, the Zombie Squad Leader entered. He gestured to report to Zhan Yixiao: "Boss, hello. I have learned that the girl named Doudou is not treating this young lady well. They are not related by blood; this girl was picked up. Doudou applied for hardship assistance in the name of the girl, but most of the food she received ended up in Doudou's stomach. She pretends to care for the girl in front of others but makes her do housework behind her back and treats her like a servant, sometimes even hitting her."
Zhan Yixiao's anger flared as he looked at Wei with pity. Although Wei did not understand what they were saying, she felt a sense of safety with Zhan Yixiao nearby. When she saw him looking at her, she broke into a pure smile that melted the hearts of both Zombies.
At that moment, the Squad Leader brought in a human woman. Surviving before the apocalypse was not difficult, but it became quite challenging afterward. The Squad Leader had racked his brain trying to find someone. During Colonel Jiang's control, most doctors at H Base had either died or fled. Later, when Qin Zhi Han took over H Base, he brought medical personnel from there. However, after Zhang Yu's counterattack, all medical staff retreated again. To ensure proper medical logistics, Zhang Yu transferred several doctors and nurses from S Base to H Base. This woman had worked a few shifts at Ninth Hospital during that time. The Squad Leader finally found someone somewhat suitable and brought her over half-threateningly and half-invitationally—hoping for a miracle to fulfill his boss's orders. Regardless of how pleased he felt inside, he had indeed stumbled upon a lucky find; although this woman had only worked ten shifts at Ninth Hospital, she had raised several children and self-taught some medical knowledge.
"What is your name?" Zhan Yixiao asked.
"My name is Zhao Hong." Upon hearing that a Zombie could speak, Zhao Hong was shocked but quickly lowered her head to hide her emotions.
"Listen, you are a doctor; check her." Zhan Yixiao pointed at Wei.
Tears streamed down Zhao Hong's face as she wanted to argue that she wasn't a doctor but feared being killed immediately if she spoke up. She could only remain silent and cautiously approached Wei, placing her hand on Wei's forehead; it felt burning hot. Startled, she quickly checked Wei's chin, armpits, and body; her palms were scorched from the heat. "She has a fever; her temperature is very high; she likely has inflammation and needs antipyretics and anti-inflammatory medication," the woman said with her head bowed.
Zhan Yixiao frowned. "Take good care of her; if she lives, you live. Don’t play tricks." He pointed to a set of clean clothes nearby and said, "Change her into these later and help wash her up."
"Yes," Zhao Hong replied obediently, lowering her gaze.
"Wei, brother will go find you some medicine. You stay here and be good," Zhan Yixiao said gently as he squatted down to speak to Wei.
"Xiao Ge, do you not want Wei anymore?" Wei tugged at Zhan Yixiao's clothing, her eyes brimming with tears as she softly said, "Wei is very good. I won't eat, I'll give you all my food. Please don't go, okay?"
"That's not it. You're sick, so brother will go get you some medicine. Once you're better, you can stay by my side forever," Zhan Yixiao spoke more fluently now, though his face still bore a fierce expression, his eyes revealed an undeniable sincerity.
"I believe you, Xiao Ge. Let's make a promise. Wei will wait for you here; you must come back soon." Wei extended her delicate finger, her innocent big eyes gazing at Zhan Yixiao, her long eyelashes fluttering.
"Promise, and I will keep my word," Zhan Yixiao said as he extended his grayish left hand to hook his finger with hers. It looked like a thick finger fitting into a slender ring.
Though he hadn't felt emotional fluctuations in a long time, at that moment, Zhan Yixiao felt a pang of sorrow in his heart. After witnessing the massacre of his mother by humans, he experienced the sensation of being relied upon for the first time again; warmth seeped into his lonely heart.
Watching this not-so-zombie-like Zombie leave, Zhao Hong took a towel from nearby to clean Wei up. As she removed Wei's clothing, Zhao Hong couldn't help but feel her eyes redden and her throat tighten. The child's body was just skin wrapped around bones; every rib was visible, and each vertebra stood out distinctly. There were several purple handprints on her skin and numerous marks from being beaten. The clothes clung to the torn wounds; even the gentlest separation tore away some flesh and blood. Despite the pain causing Wei to furrow her brows and bite her lip tightly without uttering a single cry—fearing that any noise might draw Zhan Yixiao's ire—Zhao Hong was astonished and felt even more heartbroken for Wei. This child seemed to only show weakness in front of Zhan Yixiao; in front of others, she appeared dazed or remarkably brave.
While Zhan Yixiao dealt with the aftermath of the H Base occupation and searched for medicine, Su Ruolan encountered trouble as well.
They arrived near the city and stumbled upon two groups of troops engaged in a fierce firefight. One side had three planes dropping bombs while dozens of tanks advanced on the ground. Such a display would have guaranteed a swift victory in the past, yet there was no sign of an overwhelming defeat.
On the other side, thousands of birds were occasionally released to collide with the planes or claw at the pilots; as tanks moved forward, the ground suddenly cracked open, trapping them and rendering them immobile. In response to artillery fire, countless earthen fortifications or trenches sprang up from the ground, becoming solid defensive positions.
Both sides were locked in a fierce battle. Su Ruolan was troubled; how could they break through? It seemed nearly impossible for their vehicle to quietly cross this battlefield. The situation did not allow her much time for thought. As they boarded their vehicle, it was spotted by one of the planes overhead, and a shell came flying toward them.
"Get out, run!" Su Ruolan shouted, and several people immediately abandoned the car. Just under a hundred meters away from the vehicle, a shell accurately struck it, exploding violently. The massive shockwave sent Su Ruolan and the others flying through the air, crashing hard to the ground.
"Ouch, my back." Su Ruolan rubbed her waist, feeling extremely angry. "Fallen Catastrophe, so you think you're impressive with your planes? You've completely crossed me. I will take you all down; this isn't over."
