Su Ruolan was the kind of person who believed that if you treated her well, she would return the favor double. Since she had accepted Uncle Qin's kindness, it was only natural for her to show her appreciation. She set down the hard bread in her hand and took out a pound of rice from her bag, handing it to Uncle Qin. "Uncle Qin, this is what we collected on the way. We don’t have a pot, and since there are so many of you, please take it."
Uncle Qin looked at the white rice with surprise but smiled nonetheless. "Lan girl, I appreciate your kindness, but I can't accept this rice. Thank you." He hesitated to accept it.
"Uncle Qin, since you treat me like a junior, you should accept it. It's just a small token of my gratitude; otherwise, I wouldn't dare to call you 'Uncle' anymore." Su Ruolan smiled gently and offered the bag of rice again. In truth, Su Ruolan was not someone who easily expressed herself; her personality leaned more towards being reserved. For her to take the initiative like this was already quite an emotional display.
Noticing Su Ruolan's discomfort, Uncle Qin took the bag of rice and said with a smile, "In that case, I'll accept it."
Watching Uncle Qin walk towards his troops, Su Ruolan felt a bit more relaxed, though her heart still warmed at the gesture. Uncle Qin clearly held a high position of power, yet he was exceptionally kind and caring towards her. Despite his heavy guard, Su Ruolan felt little wariness towards him; perhaps it was simply his approachable nature.
She took out some water and shared it with everyone. Although the bread was hard, food was incredibly precious in this post-apocalyptic world and should not be wasted. After being with Su Ruolan for a while, they had rarely eaten such coarse food; their stomachs had grown accustomed to better fare, but they understood the situation well enough. Though they grimaced at the bread, they still ate every last bite.
Seeing them eat so cautiously, Uncle Qin's troops looked at them with pity. These kids must be starving; they probably hadn't eaten in days. Watching them eat was truly heartbreaking. Thankfully they had encountered us; we’ve saved a few young lives today. If we can lend a hand in the future, we should take care of them more.
Su Ruolan and her friends were unaware of the thoughts running through Uncle Qin's troops' minds; otherwise, they might have felt differently about their situation. In any case, it was truly a warm misunderstanding.
"Vice Captain, why did you bring these kids along?" one of Uncle Qin's aides asked. The man stood at 170 cm tall with a lean face and distinct features. His bright eyes sparkled with intelligence, and he had a prominent nose and slightly thick upper lip that made him look very capable. He showed great respect towards Uncle Qin.
"They helped us earlier; although it was unintentional, they’ve likely been noticed by Jiang's troops. The forces surrounding us on the direct route north must have set traps by now and are just waiting for us. If they act alone, they'll likely face narrow escapes as well. It’s safer to take them along for now; once we reach the north and break free from encirclement, we can part ways," Uncle Qin said wisely as he gazed into the distance.
"I understand. I will ensure that Third Battalion takes good care of them," the aide nodded in agreement.
“Shao Jie, there's no need to go out of your way to help. Just lend a hand in times of crisis. They are still quite wary, so let’s not be too enthusiastic and scare them off,” Captain Qin waved his hand and turned to Su Ruolan and the others.
“Yes, Captain, what should we do next?” Deputy Shao asked.
“If I’m not mistaken, Jiang has already prepared several teams in the city center. I heard that the H Base uprising has failed, so it’s pointless for us to go there now. If I’m right, they should have headed south. We’ll go there,” Qin Uncle said as he opened a map, pointing to a location—Y Base.
Fate works in mysterious ways; the paths that had once diverged began to converge and intertwine once more.
Walking alongside Qin Uncle’s troops, Su Ruolan noticed their strict discipline. They never took things from others without offering something of equal value in return. The members were relatively simple, their relationships harmonious and equal. From the Captain down to the soldiers, they ate the same food and slept in the same places. Unlike the military units she had seen before, which were hierarchical and where superiors treated subordinates harshly, this group interacted more amicably. She gradually grew fond of this atmosphere. They worked hard to kill Zombies, but when it came to actively attacking Zombies, they showed no mercy towards those without consciousness. However, if they encountered a Zombie that had regained some awareness but did not attack humans, they would let it go with a dignified warning: “You may leave. If I see you harming anyone again, I won’t show mercy.”
Su Ruolan noticed that Qin Uncle’s route was not following the highway and approached him with a question: “Qin Uncle, may I ask why our route is so winding?”
“You’re right. We’ve discovered a large number of Zombies ahead, and there are also people pursuing us. We thought we could shake them off, but they cling to us like leeches and are hard to get rid of. I apologize; I intended to protect you all but ended up dragging you into this,” Qin Uncle replied sincerely to Su Ruolan’s confusion, expressing his regret for involving them.
“Qin Uncle, since we are all in this together, we should support each other. No one is dragging anyone down here. What do you need us to do?” Su Ruolan asked.
“We are executing a strategic retreat, planning to head south to Y Base, break through the blockade of Zombies and pursuers, and then gradually move north,” Qin Uncle candidly shared their marching plan.
Although she felt troubled about taking a detour that would take additional time, considering the current situation forced Su Ruolan to compromise. After all, preserving their strength was a crucial matter for any team.
Since tasting the porridge made from the rice provided by Su Ruolan and her group, Qin Uncle had grown even fonder of her, believing she was his lucky star and guardian angel; ever since meeting her, good fortune had been on his side.
As they passed through an empty mountain village devoid of people, the strong mountain winds caused the bell hanging at the village entrance to ring crisply. However, Qin Uncle and his team surprisingly found plenty of rice noodles and sweet potatoes in the kitchen. For a troop that had subsisted on countless meals of dry bread, this discovery was like finding a treasure trove of delicious food. They shouted loudly, “Is anyone here? Is anyone here?”
Apart from the howling wind, no one responded. They thought to themselves that since there was food, there must be someone living here, likely hiding away. As they roasted sweet potatoes and enjoyed the fragrant food, many felt their taste buds awaken; although each person only had a small bite, their expressions were filled with immense satisfaction. They left behind a few hard biscuits, pressing a note on top that read, "Thank you!"
Watching this caring troop, Su Ruolan suddenly felt as if she could see the beautiful blueprint that Runzhou had once described. Could they also be part of the Huaxia Army?
