“Young Commander, I just checked, and the food we brought out is not much; it can support at most ten. I've informed everyone, but those wealthy families are reluctant to pay for supplies. Some even want the army to subsidize them. It's unreasonable,” Xu Qiubai reported.
“We are responsible for ensuring their safety, and they must provide supplies as protection fees; that is their duty. If they refuse, just tell them that the army has no responsibility or obligation towards them,” Zhang Yu decisively stated. “As for the wounded, we still need to do our best to support them. As long as they were injured bravely fighting the enemy, we cannot abandon them.”
“Yes, Young Commander is wise. That previous suggestion from Peach Blossom was malicious,” Xu Qiubai said, feeling pleased that Zhang Yu had not been blinded by beauty and lost his judgment. He felt a swell of pride; my Young Commander is truly not an ordinary man.
“She is merely a pawn of the Jiang Faction. Dealing with her mainly serves to expose the spies within our ranks. During this transfer, we will clean out these people,” Zhang Yu said, twisting a pen in his hand before breaking it in half.
“I see now,” Xu Qiubai exclaimed, realization dawning on him. “No wonder many of our previous actions were known to G Base. We need to root out these troublemakers.”
“Keep a close watch on Peach Blossom and those she interacts with, including those around her. I heard from Squad that there has been progress on the Antidote for Zombies. If we can capture an insider, we can grasp the latest developments,” Zhang Yu instructed Xu Qiubai.
“Understood,” Xu Qiubai nodded in response, secretly pleased. Now he could hold Peach Blossom accountable; how dare she covet my Young Commander without considering what kind of person she is.
In the logistics unit of the army, a group of wounded soldiers gathered while a medical team member was administering medicine to each of them.
Suddenly, a woman appeared wearing a cute outfit that barely concealed her ample chest and short shorts that reached her hips, complemented by a pair of high-heeled boots. Her entrance caused quite a stir among the injured soldiers, most of whom were men and many young and inexperienced with women. The sight of such an explosively dressed girl left them wide-eyed. Some even had nosebleeds without realizing it until reminded by fellow soldiers to wipe them away. Thoughts raced through their minds; this girl was so hot and bold—if only she could be their wife, life would be perfect. Everyone gazed at her with boundless admiration as she approached.
“Hey you, come here,” Milu called out loudly to the medical staff. “Give me some iodine and medicine for external injuries.”
Despite being seen as a goddess by many men, her commanding tone immediately diminished their fondness for her. However, some superficial admirers still thought that even her impatient expression was beautiful.
"I'm sorry, but the medicine here is only for injured soldiers. If you want some, please go to the supply office and exchange it for materials," the medic said politely.
"What do you think you are? Do you know who I am? My grandfather was a subordinate of Jiang Commander! What's wrong with asking for medicine? What are these sickly fools going to do with it anyway? It's all going to be discarded, so it might as well be used by me; at least it has some value," Milu sneered as she looked around at the wounded soldiers. She thought to herself that they were all inferior goods, uglier than even her worst man, and just looking at them made her want to vomit.
"What do you mean? Who would abandon us?" questioned a soldier who had lost both hands. For someone like him, being abandoned would mean certain death. He had been injured while fulfilling his duty; the government couldn't treat him this way—it would break the spirit of the soldiers.
"Impossible! Young Commander is not that kind of person. I don't believe you, you crazy woman! I'll slap you dead for spreading rumors!" shouted a hot-headed soldier, leaning on his crutch and ready to strike Milu.
"How can it be impossible? What use do you have? You only waste food and slow us down; you're not of any help. The rare medicine should naturally be reserved for us. When we encounter zombies, we need to rely on ourselves to fight. If I were you, I'd realize your situation—look at your broken limbs and how ugly you are. You should have killed yourself long ago; why do you need someone to remind you? You're just a waste of food," Milu said disdainfully as she snatched the medicine from the medic and turned away proudly. She was extremely vain, always dressing herself beautifully, and she believed that men should be handsome as well. She felt deep disgust for average-looking or disabled men. Seeing so many disabled people in the military camp made her regret coming; she wished she had sent Peng Bo instead. Now she feared this would affect her appetite when she returned.
"This is too much! I'm going to find Young Commander and get to the bottom of this—is it true that they're planning to abandon us?" The old soldier with the crutch was furious. "Who wants to come with me?"
"I'll go." "Me too." "Count me in." Several soldiers were equally indignant and signed up one after another.
Their initial goodwill towards Milu had completely vanished; this woman, who was beautiful on the outside but had an ugly soul, left everyone feeling deeply disappointed.
"What's all that noise outside?" Zhang Yu was studying the marching route in the tent when he suddenly heard a commotion outside.
"Young Commander, it's the representatives of the wounded soldiers who wish to report something to you in person," Xu Qiubai announced as he entered.
"Why aren't they resting properly? What do they want? Is there a shortage of medicine?" Zhang Yu asked, puzzled. "Please let them in."
Five representatives of the wounded soldiers slowly walked into the room—one leaning on a crutch while two supported each other. Some were blind, some had lost legs or arms, and their heads and bodies were wrapped in white bandages.
"Please, take a seat. What brings you here?" Zhang Yu said politely.
"Thank you, Young Commander. We won't sit down. We know you have many important matters to attend to, and we shouldn't trouble you. However, we've heard some news that we couldn't ignore. The brothers wanted to hear it directly from you to believe it. We're just a few rough men who aren't good with words, so we came over. If it's inappropriate, please don't be angry," one soldier leaned on his cane and spoke slowly.
"Alright, enough with the pleasantries. Just get to the point. Young Commander, are you planning to abandon us wounded soldiers?" one impatient soldier blurted out, cutting straight to the chase.
"Where did you hear such nonsense?" Zhang Yu looked at the anxious and expectant faces before him and replied firmly, "You are all heroes. How could the government do such a thing? Who told you this?"
"Oh, if that's the case, then I'm relieved. I trust Young Commander. I'll go back and tell the brothers that they can rest easy while they recover," the impatient soldier said cheerfully.
"It came from a woman; she's an underling of Jiang Commander. You're about to issue this order. Young Commander, you can't let yourself be deceived by an ignorant woman. If this news spreads, it will affect everyone's trust in you," the soldier with the cane said earnestly.
"Qiu Bai, you need to go and eliminate the negative impact of this false rumor," Zhang Yu commanded.
Xu Qiubai returned to the Logistics Support Team with the representatives of the wounded soldiers and addressed everyone loudly: "The Young Commander cares deeply for all of you. You have served your country loyally, and the nation and government will never let you down. Please do not believe in rumors; focus on recovering your health."
Some people believed him, moved to tears; others remained skeptical, thinking that where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Facing their doubtful gazes, Xu Qiubai scanned the room and noticed a comatose soldier in the corner. He pointed casually and said, "How about this? I know some of you still have doubts in your hearts. We will do everything we can to save this comatose soldier; we will definitely bring him back to consciousness so that everyone can see our determination—we will not abandon anyone."
Next to the comatose soldier stood a dark-faced man who looked utterly shocked; his expression darkened even further when he realized that Xu Qiubai was pointing at none other than the transformed Qin Zhi Han.
