"Now that we're all in the same boat, do you really need to wear those masks?" Zhang Yu said casually.
Qin Zhi Han and Su Ruolan exchanged glances before both removed their masks.
"Did you already know my identity?" Qin Zhi Han asked in a low voice.
Zhang Yu glanced at them through the rearview mirror and replied nonchalantly, "Yeah, I recognized you the moment I saw you."
In Qin Zhi Han's mind, before he could process anything, Cyan Flame was already surprised. Could it be that this guy had an ability?
"My nose can distinguish every person I've come into contact with. Even though you disguised yourself, you still couldn't escape my recognition," Zhang Yu generously revealed.
Qin Zhi Han felt a shock inside; he was puzzled by Zhang Yu's behavior of not killing him and even saving him.
"Then you didn't really want to kill Qin Zhi Han?" Su Ruolan suddenly asked.
"Obviously," Zhang Yu shrugged.
"What are your plans? You can speak frankly now," a calmer Qin Zhi Han understood that Zhang Yu must have ulterior motives and pressed on.
"At this point, there's nothing to hide. I originally hated you to the core and planned to execute you on the spot once I captured you. Yet, you ignored my repeated invitations and didn't become one of us. Instead, you helped Hua Xia Jun with the uprising. Aren't you just disappointing me?" Zhang Yu expressed his resentment towards Qin Zhi Han. "Look at those few who want you as a personal guard, helping me fetch water and serve food; it makes me feel much better."
Su Ruolan never expected that Zhang Yu had once held such high hopes for Qin Zhi Han, transforming a charming young talent into a chatterbox, which made her smile in disbelief.
Qin Zhi Han felt a wave of guilt wash over him. Although their political views clashed on significant matters, he recognized that Zhang Yu had never truly harmed him. Their relationship, a mix of friendship and rivalry, was tinged with subtle emotions.
"So the rumors about killing Qin Zhi Han are also false?" Su Ruolan pondered aloud, beginning to understand.
"False yet not false. If he has no value, then the falsehood can easily become reality," Zhang Yu replied, feigning a dark demeanor.
"The Young Commander never intended to take Captain Qin's life. After we captured H Base, we received news that Dai Yuanshou was unwell and intended to clarify his successor. However, the situation in the north against the Zombies is dire, with casualties rising by the thousands daily. At G Base, Jiang Commander plans to mobilize all elite forces to completely annihilate the core Huaxia troops, A Group, and then claim legitimacy. But our commander believes this is unwise and wishes to unite with the Huaxia Army. We can help you secure your legitimate status while you assist us in combating the Jiang Faction. If we can inherit the leadership, we will not treat you as ruthlessly as the Jiang Faction does; we can negotiate a cooperative coexistence model," Xu Qiubai explained earnestly, unwilling for Zhang Yu's intentions to be misunderstood. "In truth, our strength can also contend with the Jiang Faction, but the Young Commander cannot bear to see humans turn against one another, especially after learning that Captain Qin has allied with the Huaxia Army; he became curious about such a group."
"Everything was progressing according to plan. But I didn't expect you, Qin Zhi Han, to have such a low status in the Huaxia Army. The one who came to save you was this fool, Ruo Lan. I never imagined the Jiang Faction could be so obsessive. They completely disregard human life as if it were worthless; although they claim to work for humanity's benefit by conducting research on Antidote for Zombies, I worry about how it might ultimately be misused," Zhang Yu said seriously, abandoning his earlier jesting.
"Young Commander, actually, you've got it wrong. I'm not even an official member of the Huaxia Army," Qin Zhi Han admitted candidly as he grasped Zhang Yu's entire plan.
"How is that possible?" Zhang Yu asked in surprise.
"It’s true. There are some misunderstandings between them and the Huaxia Army. If it weren't for the information you provided, I would have been on my way to contact them," Su Ruolan nodded earnestly.
"No wonder no one from Huaxia Military Headquarters came to rescue you," Xu Qiubai realized.
"So what are your plans moving forward?" Zhang Yu inquired. "The situation is tense now; you understand my plan—shouldn't we take some action?"
"We will continue to reach out to the Huaxia Army and convey your intentions in hopes of facilitating cooperation among everyone," Qin Zhi Han contemplated before adding, "But you need to return to S Base quickly to oversee the situation. The Jiang Faction's Squad excels at assassination. If something were to happen to Zhang Commander while you're away, this situation would become unsolvable."
"Look at you, so charming and flirtatious. Who would have thought you'd end up losing to a woman? How does it feel to be chased?" After discussing serious matters, Qin Zhi Han looked at Zhang Yu's disheveled appearance and chuckled lightly, suddenly teasing him.
"What are you talking about? I'm just being a gentleman, letting her have her way. Even though I’m charming, I’m not lewd. I take every relationship seriously," Zhang Yu replied, catching sight of Su Ruolan smiling. He quickly tried to clarify; he didn’t want to leave a bad impression in front of Ruo Lan. He shot back, "Aren't you the same? You have beautiful women shielding you, and you're willing to go to jail for them."
Qin Zhi Han was momentarily speechless. Even though he had seen through Milu's feigned act of self-sacrifice at that time, Zhang Yu's words were undeniable truths. He glanced at Su Ruolan, fearing she might get angry or think poorly of him. To his surprise, he found her leaning against the car window with her eyes closed, seemingly indifferent to their banter. A wave of discomfort washed over him; despite her efforts to rescue him through thick and thin, he realized there were no emotional ripples in her heart for him.
He had thought that after saying those words, Su Ruolan's expression would change, but when he saw that she didn’t care at all, Zhang Yu sighed inwardly. He didn’t understand why he was so concerned about Su Ruolan’s feelings. He thought it was a normal reaction when encountering someone he liked but had deliberately ignored his true feelings—he cared for Su Ruolan more than he had realized. His earlier comments hadn’t been entirely truthful; when using Qin Zhi Han as bait and seeing Peach Blossom's true identity, he had considered abandoning Qin Zhi Han altogether. However, upon seeing Su Ruolan present, his words had inexplicably turned into a defense of them, even hastening their plans and tearing off the mask right there. Well, it was just a way to repay Su Ruolan for saving his life before.
At that moment, Su Ruolan was unaware of the tangled emotions between Qin Zhi Han and Zhang Yu. Her consciousness had already reached another realm as she began to cultivate urgently. Reset had issued a warning: there were zero lives left. If she couldn’t break through soon, they would all be in trouble together. With her life at stake, Su Ruolan had no energy left to consider anything else, let alone notice the turbulent feelings of the two men around her.
Xu Qiubai drove while observing the interactions between Zhang Yu, Qin Zhi Han, and Su Ruolan with a gloomy mood. His long bangs obscured his eyes, hiding many untold thoughts. Although he was aware of Young Commander's plan and the half-truths regarding Qin Zhi Han’s fate, he still hoped to eliminate him. Unexpectedly, another man appeared and diverted Young Commander’s attention from him; now there was an additional woman—one he despised. He could never forget that hateful smile on her face when she left with Young Commander while he was trapped in the car facing life and death struggles. He wished he could mar her beautiful face; did she really rely on that exquisite appearance to seduce Young Commander?
