"Yes, yes, until the last moment, everyone must not give up," Cheng Xi said. The girl's heart was the most fragile and sensitive; seeing such a scene had already brought her to tears, her voice choked with emotion.
At that moment, the four individuals had begun to roll on the ground, their muscles visibly swelling, veins bulging, and beads of sweat dripping down their faces. They were flushed, seemingly enduring inhuman pain.
"Ah!" Finally, Hong Chuan could not hold back any longer and let out a scream, one that was utterly heartbreaking. Everyone was startled; although they had seen Zombies before and witnessed the transformation process of humans into Zombies, none seemed to suffer as intensely as they did. Was it possible that the energy from Mutated Animals was more overwhelming for ordinary people?
Fortunately, despite their extreme agony, the four did not show signs of becoming Zombies; they still appeared as normal humans. The waiting was excruciating, and everyone could only endure this heart-wrenching time as if it were a knife cutting into flesh.
Another six hours passed. They had already spent more than half their time in this place, and the risk of being discovered had greatly increased.
"Bai Zhen, Li Yuxuan, you each take a team to stand guard nearby. If anything happens, report immediately," Qin Zhi Han began making arrangements as he observed the surroundings. "Ma Commander, Zhang Deputy Commander, can you set up some defenses around here to confuse enemy searches?"
"Alright, no problem," Ma Commander and Zhang Deputy Commander replied as they took two teams to get busy around the area.
Su Ruolan anxiously watched the four individuals in the center, silently cheering them on. Come on, you can do it. These four were ordinary people with decent skills; none had any Abilities before this moment. She wondered if they could withstand this trial.
Four more hours passed. Suddenly, Jiang Wei let out a loud shout and collapsed onto the ground. The other three soon followed suit.
Everyone exchanged glances in confusion. What was happening? They looked like they were about to transform into Zombies but did not seem so; they still had human faces and limbs. If there were no changes, then their earlier struggles had been quite alarming, and it was evident that their auras felt different now.
With previous experience under his belt, Kong Xiang couldn't help but smile slightly. Although his eyes were blindfolded, his gaunt face still showed a hint of compassion and relief. At that moment, he seemed less like a 17-year-old boy; his unfocused gaze appeared to see far into the future—so deep and tranquil.
Su Ruolan also sensed the change in the four's auras and quickly stepped forward to approach Feng Kai. She reached out to touch his forehead. Nearby, Feng Tang noticed this and stopped crying; feeling ashamed inside, he hurriedly knelt beside his brother and embraced him tightly.
Not hot, no fever—thank goodness. Su Ruolan felt relieved; if there were heat during the evolution of an Ability, it could easily lead to another extreme—not becoming a Zombie but turning into an idiot or invalid instead.
As Su Ruolan withdrew her hand, Feng Kai slowly opened his eyes, somewhat dazed, and said, "Is this the hall? Why does everyone here look so much like Vice Captain Su?"
The other three gradually woke up as well. Their initially confused minds were further muddled by Feng Kai's words. "Am I dead? How can I still hear someone talking? Have I become a spirit?"
"You’re all fine; you made it through. Hurry up and come to your senses, stop being so dazed," Qin Zhi Han said cheerfully as he stepped forward to help each of them up. "How do you feel?"
"Captain, it turns out we’re not dead," Hong Chuan exclaimed. "That's great! I just feel stronger than before."
"Then focus your mind and guide that energy within your body outwards using your right hand," Kong Xiang said as he walked over to the four of them.
The four exchanged bewildered glances, but thankfully, despite their confusion, they were obedient. They each concentrated and began to channel their energy towards the open space.
"Wow, I actually have an Ability!" Jiang Wei exclaimed excitedly as a stream of water appeared in his hand, unable to contain his grin.
"I have an Ability too! Tang Tang, look, it's earth-based!" Feng Kai said joyfully as he held the soil in his hands, beaming at his younger brother.
"Big brother, congratulations!" Feng Tang replied enthusiastically. It was wonderful that his brother had escaped death and gained new abilities.
Nearby soldiers watched in amazement as the four not only avoided turning into Zombies but also evolved different types of Abilities. They genuinely felt happy for them and rushed over to lift them up, tossing them into the air before catching them again amidst cheers.
In that moment, everyone was filled with excitement. No one had ever dared to consume Mutated Animals before; now they bravely tried it. Not only had they found a way to secure food supplies for the logistics team, but they could also grow stronger and evolve Abilities—this was truly a remarkable discovery.
Su Ruolan understood that this was closely related to the water from the space, but the soldiers were unaware. If they caught a Mutated Animal and consumed it without proper handling, there was no guarantee that nothing would go wrong. So she pulled Qin Zhi Han aside and hesitated before saying, "Captain Qin, these foods need to be processed before anyone can eat them; it's not as simple as it looks. Shouldn't you clarify this?"
Qin Zhi Han understood that this was undoubtedly related to the water Su Ruolan had brought out. He had already sensed its benefits before, and this was a secret that couldn't be publicly disclosed. He nodded and said, "Ruo Lan, there's no need for us to be so formal with each other. Just call me Qin Zhi Han. I'll handle this matter; you don’t need to worry."
Su Ruolan felt relieved and replied, "Thank you, Qin Zhi Han."
Faced with the good fortune of the four, the others were drooling over the hunted Mutated Animals, their empty stomachs yearning for an immediate BBQ feast.
Qin Zhi Han then issued a command: for the sake of everyone's food supply, all collected food must be submitted for inspection by Su Ruolan, the Vice Captain, before it could be allocated for use as needed. Anyone who defied this military order would bear full responsibility for any negative consequences.
Although everyone was somewhat confused, they recalled that they had always been able to eat their fill when Su Ruolan was present. Following her often led to good fortune, so they didn't resist too strongly.
Fortunately, the number of Mutated Animals collected this time wasn't large—only a few dozen. However, there were plenty of wild vegetables in the mountains. Seizing an opportunity while everyone was distracted, Su Ruolan took some vegetables from her space and mixed them in to make a thin porridge, which was barely enough to fill everyone's stomachs.
The space was truly a wonderful thing; seeds thrown inside had sprouted. However, once harvested, the cut vegetables and fruits would disappear. Ever since Ruo Lan began to comprehend her Dao Heart, the space had started to grow on its own. The harvested vegetables and grains would regrow, albeit slowly, which delighted Su Ruolan as it felt like she was carrying a large granary with her.
Taking advantage of her Ice Element Ability, Su Ruolan purified all the Mutated Animals they had caught, absorbing their frenzied negative energy. She felt herself on the verge of leveling up and needed to find a quiet place to do so. After handing over the food to Zhang Deputy Commander and Jackson Wang for distribution, Su Ruolan hurried out of the temporary supply tent.
“Qin Zhi Han, I have something to take care of. I need to bring Kong Xiang and Cheng Xi with me; I’ll be back in one to three days. I've already placed this batch of food in the supply tent; everyone just needs to ration it,” Su Ruolan stated directly to Qin Zhi Han.
“Ruo Lan, what’s going on? Can you tell me? I can help share your burden,” Qin Zhi Han replied sincerely.
“I'm sorry, but I can't say anything right now. Please forgive me,” Su Ruolan said hesitantly, lowering her head.
“Alright, I understand. Take care of yourself,” Qin Zhi Han responded with disappointment; his heart felt heavy for a moment but quickly regained composure as he reassured her, “Don’t worry; I will make arrangements.”
“Thank you,” Su Ruolan said with guilt before hastily leaving.
She and Kong Xiang and Cheng Xi immediately headed deeper into the mountains.
“Where is Vice Captain Su going in such a hurry?” Bai Zhen asked curiously as he approached.
“Food is scarce; Vice Captain Su is anxious and has taken them out to gather supplies. We all need to conserve what we have for now,” Qin Zhi Han replied casually to Bai Zhen, who nodded in understanding along with those around them.
“Captain, should I send someone to follow and protect her?” Bai Zhen asked quietly after everyone else had left.
“No need. I trust her,” Qin Zhi Han replied, regaining her usual cold demeanor and burying all her worries deep inside. She wasn't completely open with herself yet, but she would continue to work hard to show her sincerity. If she liked and loved her, then she needed to trust her enough. Su Ruolan was not an ordinary woman; she had the ability to soar high. All Qin Zhi Han needed to do was give her enough space and fly alongside her, rather than clipping her wings.
After leaving the main group, Su Ruolan quickly found a secluded cave and began to channel her energy. Kong Xiang, Cheng Xi, and Monet stood guard at the entrance of the cave. They were well aware of Su Ruolan's ability level, so they remained calm. However, they did not realize that upgrading her abilities was a matter of life and death; otherwise, they might have been a bit more worried.
At that moment, the three began to joke around. “Monet, when are you going to transform? Look at you now; if you transformed, you'd definitely be handsome. Wouldn’t you be the first successful and handsome giant wolf worshipped by all other wolves? Wow, just thinking about that scene is so exciting,” Cheng Xi said with sparkling eyes, looking very cute.
“If he transforms into a bald, burly man, would you still think that’s a beautiful sight?” Kong Xiang couldn't help but tease.
“How could that happen? Look at how thick his fur is now,” Cheng Xi retorted.
“Then he’d turn into a hairy man with a full beard and hair all over his chest and thighs. You’d still like that?” Kong Xiang continued his playful banter.
“Gross!” Cheng Xi exclaimed as the thought of Monet turning into that made him look at Monet in horror, covering his mouth with his hands as if about to vomit.
“Enough from both of you,” Monet said with an exaggerated eye roll at their teasing. However, his competitive spirit kicked in as he shot back at Kong Xiang, “If I transform, I’ll definitely be more handsome than you.”
The two continued their playful exchange when suddenly they sensed movement coming from inside the cave. They focused intently and exclaimed, “Sister Su/Sister Ruo Lan/Master has successfully leveled up.” Following that, a divine light descended upon them as their levels began to rise rapidly.
