"Are you saying that Jiang Zhisen is dead?" Xu Qiubai asked.
"Yes, everyone around him was dead except for me. If I didn't act quickly, the opportunity would slip away," Fang Nan said, taking a piece of food with a hint of pride.
"This is quite strange," Zhang Yu said as he opened the box, looking at the two blood vials inside. He picked one up to examine it. "What secrets are hidden in this? Qiu Bai, take one and send it to Dr. White at the laboratory for research."
"Sure, Young Commander. If we can uncover the secret before the Jiang Faction does, let's see what leverage they have over us," Xu Qiubai replied, raising his glass to toast Zhang Yu.
"This isn't going to be easy; they haven't cracked it for so long. It's a pity we don't have more information. However, with you back, Old Fang, our strength has greatly increased. Let's toast to our reunion," Zhang Yu said, lifting his glass to Xu Qiubai and Fang Nan.
Inside the base.
"You left H Base, Su Ruolan?" Qin Zhi Han asked.
"Yes, as per your instructions, we've been protecting Commander Su's safety near H Base. We haven't seen her come out for quite some time; I heard she's been treating a girl infected with the Zombie Virus," Jiang Wei from the Wolf Brigade replied.
"Do you have any idea where she might be headed?" Qin Zhi Han wondered; it seemed odd that Su Ruolan would go anywhere at this time. Outside, she was surrounded by enemies; where could she possibly be safe? The zombies were evolving, posing a significant threat to human survival. How could humanity solve this problem?
"Young Commander, our people have been following her from a distance; it seems she's heading not far from H Base," Jiang Wei said.
What could be nearby? Unless it was that place. Qin Zhi Han suddenly felt alarmed as he recalled the strange location that had vanished before. Could Su Ruolan be going there? What could she possibly want there?
S Base.
Zhang Yu appointed Fang Nan as the Vice Captain of the Strike Force, directly under his command. In no time, Fang Nan became a rising star in the political arena, gaining Zhang Yu's trust. Xu Qiubai had previously maintained a good relationship with Fang Nan, but seeing him favored by Zhang Yu stirred complex feelings within him, and jealousy began to fester.
"Young Commander, Dr. White has sent a message. There has been a significant discovery regarding that blood from the Vein. A dying Volunteer used it and died without any mutations," Fang Nan reported.
"What? This discovery is monumental. Continue the research. Whatever you need, just ask," Zhang Yu replied, clearly excited.
In Xu Qiubai's room, upon learning that Fang Nan had taken away his team of subordinates, he was so furious that he crushed his cup in his hand. What was this? Fang Nan had gone too far. He had previously let go of many supplies without holding it against him, but now Fang Nan not only wanted food but also people and to show off in front of the Young Commander. If this continued, where would he stand? He couldn't let this go on; he had to fight back.
Last time, his only experimental subject had been taken by a Zombie—one that exhibited a certain level of intelligence. So far, the only one fitting that description was the Orange-Eyed Zombie from H Base, the only Mutated Zombie that had caused trouble for the Young Commander. What did it want with the mutated subjects? Was it also trying to study the antidote? That didn't make sense unless someone needed it and Fang Nan was serving that person. Who could that person be? If he could uncover that secret, it would surely benefit the Young Commander. With this thought in mind, Xu Qiubai felt a surge of adrenaline. Finding an excuse, he bid farewell to Zhang Yu and led his team toward H Base.
