Wang Chao and the others realized that the sudden disappearance of the street zombies was certainly not a good sign. Coupled with the bone-chilling roar they had just heard, Wang Chao's anxiety lingered. At that moment, he had no idea that a mutated tentacle zombie, just a kilometer away from him, had already claimed the lives of five people in an instant.
The trio's pace had slowed down. What should have taken three hours to cover was now reduced to just one hour for half the distance, thanks to the absence of zombies around them and an inexplicable boost in their stamina. They understood that this was due to some unknown change within their bodies, but whether this change was good or bad remained uncertain.
"Just ahead is the hospital; we should arrive in half an hour!" Wang Chao pointed forward and said.
Wang Chao said this mainly to prepare Yang Mengying mentally. It is often said that the closer one gets to home, the more anxious they become, especially when facing life and death. If, by unfortunate chance, Yang Mengying's parents had turned into zombies, it was hard to guarantee she wouldn't break down. Yang Mengying understood Wang Chao's intention behind his words; she patted his shoulder and gently touched Yiyi's little face before saying, "Don't worry."
Wang Chao nodded.
The three continued toward the hospital.
"Run!" Suddenly, without any warning, Wang Chao shouted loudly, "Don't look back, run!" He took off first. Ouyang En and Yang Mengying were confused about what was happening but seeing Wang Chao's serious expression, they said nothing more and started running. Just a moment before, Wang Chao's anxiety had reached its peak; his subconscious told him that if he didn't run now, he would die!
It felt just like when he had fallen from the sixth floor—an identical sensation.
Then came a roar so close it felt as if it exploded right next to them. The three couldn't help but turn around and saw a massive zombie, over three meters tall and covered in tentacles, rapidly closing in on them. They realized that this zombie wasn't walking on its legs; instead, its numerous tentacles were writhing on the ground, propelling it forward at incredible speed.
"What the hell is that?!" Ouyang En couldn't help but shout.
"Don't look back!" Wang Chao adjusted Yiyi's little face to keep her from seeing.
"Uncle, what's behind us?" Yiyi asked.
"Nothing," Wang Chao replied.
Despite his words, Wang Chao couldn't help but glance back occasionally. The creature was gaining on them fast. "The hospital is right ahead!" Ouyang En shouted as they ran. Indeed, Wang Chao could see the name of the hospital on its rooftop—First People's Hospital. "Get inside!" Wang Chao yelled. "That monster is too big; it won't be able to move well inside!"
Despite this, Wang Chao had no confidence that he could escape the pursuing monster and safely reach the Inpatient Building.
The monsters behind were too fast.
Wang Chao even caught a glimpse of the first floor of the Inpatient Building, where a group of Survivors was crowded at the entrance, staring in terror at the three who were running toward them and the Tentacle Monster behind. They seemed to have forgotten to flee. Then, Wang Chao saw them locking the door! "Open the door!" Wang Chao shouted angrily. He was almost at the entrance, but was blocked outside by the Survivors. The fury in his heart was palpable, yet the Survivors inside remained unmoved.
Ling Kong let out a blast!
Wang Chao quickly dodged to the left, just as a tentacle shot past him.
When he turned back to look, several daggers were simultaneously thrusting toward Yang Mengying and Ouyang En. Wang Chao had no time to hesitate; he threw a kitchen knife, and Ling Kong severed several tentacles, causing yellow liquid to splatter everywhere, releasing an indescribable stench. The monster had already reached them, and the three had made it to the entrance of the Inpatient Building. Ouyang En was banging on the glass while shouting, "Open the door! Open up!"
The people inside were already frozen in shock. Those who were somewhat aware merely retreated against the wall, looking at the four with cold eyes, as if they were gazing at lifeless corpses. Ouyang En felt despair creeping in.
The hospital's glass was no flimsy construction; even bullets from a Sniper Rifle would struggle to penetrate it, let alone Ouyang En.
"Run somewhere else!" Wang Chao knew that getting those people to open the door was harder than reaching for the heavens.
The tentacles moved swiftly as they dodged continuously, only hearing the sound of tentacles hitting the tempered glass with loud thuds. It was over; numerous tentacles surrounded them in a small area. Yang Mengying was clearly struggling to hold on, and Ouyang En also showed signs of fatigue. Wang Chao shouted and executed a quick roll to evade a tentacle, breaking through their encirclement with incredible speed.
However, Ouyang En and Yang Mengying clearly lacked such strength and could only passively avoid attacks.
In Wang Chao's mind, his first instinct was to run directly toward safety; his intuition told him that staying here would lead only to death. Just as he took a step forward, he suddenly stopped.
Because Wang Chao remembered Liu He’s words: "At a critical moment, you can abandon even Yiyi without hesitation!"
He smiled, pulling the rope, and lowered Yiyi before charging towards the monster. Wang Chao grabbed a kitchen knife and flew at the creature. The monster had already sensed him, retracting all its tentacles to form a shield. The knife struck the surface without leaving a mark, but in that moment, Wang Chao bought Yang Mengying and Ouyang En some time to escape.
"Run!" Wang Chao shouted, catching the knife as it bounced back, directing his voice at the dazed Yang Mengying and Ouyang En. "Quickly, take Yiyi with you!"
"What about you?" Yang Mengying yelled back as she ran.
"I'll catch up soon!" Wang Chao crouched down while holding the knife in one hand. This was clearly not a posture for fleeing; he understood that if no one stayed behind, all four of them would perish. Yang Mengying realized this too; Wang Chao was clearly preparing to attack rather than escape. "Wang Chao!" she called out.
"Stop hesitating like a coward and get out of here!" Wang Chao shouted, feeling an overwhelming fear of death that compelled him to raise his voice.
Before he could finish speaking, the tentacles shot out like bullets. Previously, the three had dispersed to avoid the tentacle attacks, but now Wang Chao faced an overwhelming number alone. Seeing that the others showed no sign of running, he became furious and yelled, "Are you just going to watch me die here? Get out of here!" In that moment of distraction, the tentacles were already upon him. Wang Chao hastily tried to block with his knife, but the immense force still sent him flying three meters away.
Yang Mengying rushed over to help him up, but Wang Chao pushed her hand away forcefully, cursing, "Ouyang En, take them away! Otherwise, I swear I'll haunt you as a ghost! Yang Mengying, don’t drag me down! If it weren't for you two, I wouldn't be in this mess. Do you want to watch me die? Don’t let me die because of you!"
Wang Chao's voice was loud.
Yang Mengying had already started crying while Yiyi said, "Uncle, remember to come find us!" Without looking back, she ran off into the distance.
Ouyang En pulled Yang Mengying along, shouting, "Sister-in-law, let’s go!"
The tentacles lunged at Wang Chao once more.
