Wang Chao quickly helped Zhao Dong to his feet and asked, "Who are those people?" Zhao Dong brushed off the dirt from his clothes and replied, "He's Li Dewei's son. You should know Li Dewei, our city's Vice Mayor." Wang Chao frowned; he was never well-informed about such matters, so he asked, "Li Xiuli dares to be this arrogant?"
Zhao Dong sighed, "Before, even if you gave Li Xiuli some guts, he wouldn't have dared. But after the Zombie outbreak, who can control him? He relies on his father being in the system and gets more food than others. Now he's using some of that food to gather a bunch of ruffians."
Wang Chao felt a surge of anger. If the food that those soldiers had painstakingly salvaged from the Zombie-infested city was being taken by these people, how could anyone not be furious? Wang Chao said, "The residents here can't let him run amok like this."
"He’s only targeting me," Zhao Dong shook his head and continued, "We were college classmates. He used to have a crush on Li Yunqi. Now that no one is keeping him in check, he comes to harass me every few days..." He spoke with a self-deprecating smile.
Wang Chao finally understood. If Li Xiuli treated everyone like this, it would stir public resentment, and people would unite against him regardless of whose son he was. In this world ravaged by Zombies, life was cheap. But if Li Xiuli was only targeting Zhao Dong, then others would prefer not to provoke this spoiled brat as long as the fire didn't reach their own homes.
While they were talking, Wang Chao noticed Chen Feifei and Li Yunqi approaching from a distance, seemingly finishing their morning labor. As they entered, Li Yunqi immediately spotted the bruises on Zhao Dong's face and rushed over to check on him. "What happened?"
Zhao Dong hesitated and smiled, saying, "I just tripped and fell." He glanced at Wang Chao, who understood that Zhao Dong wanted him to cover for him. So Wang Chao nodded and added, "This kid saw me coming and ran downstairs but ended up tripping."
"Really now? Can't you be more careful?" Li Yunqi said with concern as she gently touched Zhao Dong's face. Meanwhile, Wang Chao expressionlessly went to the car to bring Yiyi down. Seeing Wang Chao carrying Yiyi, Chen Feifei curiously asked, "Wang Chao, who is this little sister?"
Wang Chao replied, "She's my sister." Chen Feifei nodded and said, "Your sister is really cute."
Once back inside the house, Zhao Dong insisted on cooking himself. However, cooking only meant boiling a few bowls of plain rice porridge; fresh vegetables were scarce, and the only side dish was a small bowl of pickles. While Zhao Dong cooked, Li Yunqi helped out, but their interaction was more flirtatious than anything else. At the dining table sat only Wang Chao, Chen Feifei, and Yiyi.
Wang Chao felt uneasy about bringing up his departure since Chen Feifei had tacitly agreed to live together; otherwise, she would have suggested separating last night. It seemed that Chen Feifei regarded him as her boyfriend. After a long pause, Wang Chao decided it was better to address it sooner rather than later: "Chen Feifei, I need to tell you something. I won't be living here starting tomorrow."
"What?" Chen Feifei looked at Wang Chao as if she hadn't understood.
"I said I won't be living here anymore; I've joined the military," Wang Chao clarified.
"Really?" A look of regret crossed Chen Feifei's face as she replied, "Well then, you have to come back often; I'll be waiting for you at home." Her expression was so endearing that Wang Chao found himself swallowing the words about how they probably wouldn't see each other much in the future. Feeling awkward, he realized that before being with him, Chen Feifei must have had her share of experiences; his one night with her was merely fulfilling a simple primal desire.
But Wang Chao couldn't just say that in front of others.
At that moment, Yiyi spoke up, "Uncle means he won't come back here anymore."
Wang Chao was surprised that Yiyi had said what he was thinking. He looked at her in astonishment; the saying "children speak with wisdom" fit her perfectly. He felt compelled to respond, "Kids say silly things. I will come back to visit." He noticed Chen Feifei's expression change and sighed inwardly. It was true that he had reached this point in their conversation, and pretending otherwise would be too childish.
With that thought, Wang Chao sighed again, picked up Yiyi, and walked outside. Yiyi leaned against his shoulder, her mouth close to his ear as she whispered, "Uncle, I don't like that sister!"
Wang Chao paused in surprise and asked, "Why not?"
Yiyi pouted and thought for a long time, seemingly searching for a reason she didn't like her. Finally, she said, "Hmm, that sister seems like an actress!"
"An actress?" Wang Chao pondered for a moment before replying, "You mean she's not genuine?"
Yiyi nodded. "It seems like that's the case."
Wang Chao shook his head and fell silent. Chen Feifei was still the same Chen Feifei from college, but he was no longer the same Wang Chao from those days. He had always believed there were still innocent people in the world and pretended to be innocent himself. However, he eventually realized that no matter how one disguises themselves, someone will always see through the facade and discover the truth beneath. Perhaps this was the innocence of children; adults only viewed issues through the lens of self-interest.
Wang Chao felt a wave of sentimentality wash over him. Regardless, he had fulfilled his promise; he had safely delivered Chen Feifei without a single hair harmed. He comforted himself with this thought.
As they wandered down the street, he discreetly took out some bread and pickled eggs from his Spatial Ring for Yiyi to eat while he observed the various stalls around them. After an unknown amount of time had passed, Wang Chao suddenly spotted a familiar figure at the street corner—none other than Zhao Dong's girlfriend, Li Yunqi. "Wait a minute!" Wang Chao thought; Li Yunqi should be working at the other end of the alley—this direction was all wrong.
With this realization, Wang Chao decided to greet her. Just then, he saw a van pull up in front of Li Yunqi. She got into the van, leaving Wang Chao feeling perplexed. Nevertheless, Li Yunqi was Zhao Dong's girlfriend, and Zhao Dong had always treated him well. With that in mind, Wang Chao hurried over to the Military Jeep.
Driving, Wang Chao followed closely behind the van.
