Old Lei hung up the phone, finding it somewhat amusing. From Li Dewei's description, it seemed someone had seriously harmed his son. Although Old Lei was not clear about what kind of person Li Xiuli was, he knew that Li Xiuli was incompetent. What surprised Old Lei was that the person who had harmed Li Xiuli appeared to be from his own military. This matter had to be dealt with severely; after all, soldiers were meant to obey orders. A soldier who could not even follow the rules was not a good soldier.
Thus, Old Lei agreed to cooperate with Mayor Li Dewei to find the culprit who had harmed Li Xiuli.
Li Dewei's subordinates had already gathered, and with a wave of his hand, he led everyone toward the command center. Five vans lined up in a row, creating quite a spectacle in the almost deserted Refugee Zone.
"Old Li, why such a grand show?" Old Lei asked as he watched the five vans parked outside the command center, feeling somewhat displeased. It was clear they were there to apprehend someone from the military rather than simply asking for assistance. Though he felt unhappy about it, he did not show it on his face and calmly replied, "Do you think I would refuse if you needed someone?"
Li Dewei, being a cunning old fox himself, sensed the underlying meaning in Old Lei's words and quickly responded, "Old Lei, I have my reasons. This is my only son! This is an act of barbarism in broad daylight! If such people are not punished severely, how can I maintain order in the entire Refugee Zone? Can I continue as acting mayor?"
As Li Dewei wiped away tears while lamenting, he seemed even more wronged than Dou E.
Old Lei shook his head helplessly and asked, "Do you know this person's name?"
"Wang Chao! The person is called Wang Chao!" Li Dewei replied.
"Wang Chao?" Old Lei never expected it would be Wang Chao. Wang Chao was likely the most promising among the hundreds of soldiers; after all, there were no more than three people here capable of delivering a level-six strike. If Wang Chao was indeed the assailant, should he hand him over or not? Li Dewei came in with great momentum and certainly would not leave empty-handed. If relations between the military and police soured, controlling the Refugee Camp would become difficult. However, Old Lei genuinely valued talent; Wang Chao was indeed a capable individual. Suddenly, Old Lei found himself torn.
"Old Lei?" Seeing Old Lei lost in thought, Li Dewei quietly asked.
Old Lei said, "Let me make a call and see if I can find this person."
"That would be wonderful!" Li Dewei exclaimed.
Back in his office, Old Lei dialed Huangfu Ling's number: "Where are you right now? Hurry back!"
"I'm currently assessing the location and time for the next mission. What's going on? What happened?" Huangfu Ling's voice was somewhat urgent. Old Lei guessed that Huangfu Ling had rushed out alone to the Refugee Zone again, feeling a bit helpless as he said, "Wang Chao has caused trouble. You should come back now, and we can discuss it in detail!" As he spoke, Old Lei heard the angry roar of a Zombie coming from that direction.
Huangfu Ling hung up the phone, changed his pace, and leaped into action. With a swift motion, he plunged his knife into a Zombie Dog before it could even let out a sound, causing it to collapse lifelessly. Huangfu Ling dusted off his hands and glanced at the five or six Zombie Dogs surrounding him, saying, "This Wang Chao really knows how to stir up trouble on his first day."
In the training room.
"Alright, that's it for the explanation of active firearms. The real learning comes from practice; after all, talking without doing is just empty talk. However, we don't have enough live ammunition for you to shoot right now. In the future..." Before Shen Zhitao could finish speaking, the door was suddenly pushed open from the outside, and a squad of soldiers appeared before everyone, led by Captain Lei.
Captain Lei said, "Wang Chao, you are suspected of misconduct. Please come with us."
Everyone exchanged glances, looking at Wang Chao. He thought to himself that Li Xiuli's efficiency was impressive; it hadn't been long since the incident, and they had already mobilized military personnel. But was it really necessary to make such a big deal out of it? He had only scared him a little! At that moment, Wang Chao had no idea that his casual actions had turned Li Xiuli into a literal eunuch.
Wang Chao felt there was nothing serious going on; at most, he would be locked up in a small room for a few days. So he didn't say anything and shrugged his shoulders before saying, "Alright."
As he followed Captain Lei outside, two soldiers suddenly put handcuffs on him. Wang Chao felt something was off; according to his understanding, if he just denied everything, they wouldn't be able to do anything to him. Why were they putting handcuffs on him right away? This didn't make sense! As they pushed Wang Chao out, he saw several vans parked not far from the command center and many people gathered at the entrance.
"Is that person being restrained the one who injured Xiu Li?" Old Lei asked Toothless Brother and his group who had just arrived.
Toothless Brother and his companions looked over at Wang Chao and exclaimed in unison, "That's right! Not only did he injure us, but he also hurt Li Shao!" "Yes, it's this guy!" They all pointed fingers at him. In no time at all, they had pushed Wang Chao to the front of the command center. When Li Dewei saw Wang Chao, he rushed over immediately and grabbed him by the collar, saying, "It's you! I'm going to bring you to justice!"
"Damn!" Wang Chao thought to himself. I didn't kill your son; why are you making such a fuss?
"Ahem." Old Lei interjected from the side and asked, "Wang Chao, did you really smash Mayor Li's son Li Xiuli's reproductive organ?"
"What?" Wang Chao thought, what the hell is going on?
Suddenly, he felt someone pinch him from behind. Turning around, he found it was Captain Lei. Captain Lei said, "What are you looking at? I'm asking you a question!" Wang Chao didn't understand Captain Lei's intention with that pinch, but when he turned back, he noticed a change in Captain Lei's expression, as if he was trying to remind him of something. Wang Chao quickly shouted, "No, absolutely not!"
"Well then!" Li Dewei said. "With so many people as witnesses, you dare to speak nonsense in broad daylight? Someone, take him down! This is intentional injury, and I suspect this is an attempt to undermine the entire Refugee Zone's security. A person like this, with such intentions, deserves to be executed multiple times!" As he spoke, a group of police officers moved forward to apprehend Wang Chao. Wang Chao thought to himself that this was escalating; he had inadvertently caused trouble for Li Xiuli. No wonder Li Dewei was ready to fight him.
"Let's wait for Huangfu Ling to come back before we decide," Old Lei suggested.
"There's no time to wait!" Li Dewei insisted. "This is a public safety issue, and I'm responsible for it; it's not your problem!" Li Dewei changed from his previous lewd demeanor to a serious one and declared, "If I can't even exercise this little authority, then tomorrow I'll call a meeting and resign!"
"Don't do that!" Old Lei quickly intervened.
At such a critical moment, if the mayor were to resign, it would undoubtedly add fuel to the fire during a time of public unrest. The recently gathered support would surely dissipate. Li Dewei was truly putting his reputation on the line to take down Wang Chao. With things having escalated to this point, Old Lei felt helpless; he had no idea when Huangfu Ling would return.
Wang Chao realized they were clearly out for his life.
Panicking and looking around desperately, he saw Shen Zhitao and others running over from the training room. Spotting Shen Zhitao immediately, Wang Chao shouted, "Queen, save me!"
