Wang Chao felt a sense of helplessness, the unwillingness churning within him but not showing on his face. Many years ago, someone had said, "Do nobles and commoners have different blood?" Wang Chao knew this phrase wasn't entirely fitting, yet it perfectly captured his current feelings.
Shen Zhitao noticed the turmoil in Wang Chao's heart. With her slender fingers, she lifted his chin and said playfully, "You really shouldn't try to act cool; it's better when you're a bit more candid."
With a quiet sigh in his heart, Wang Chao put on a pleading expression and said, "Queen, can't you please help me out? I heard I'm being assigned to a dangerous mission."
"Be grateful for what you have," Shen Zhitao replied.
"Isn't that just delaying my death by a few days?" Wang Chao retorted.
Shen Zhitao shrugged and said, "Who told you that? No matter how dangerous the mission is, there's always a chance to survive. Besides, if it's truly dangerous, you could just not go. With your skills, surviving outside shouldn't be a problem." Her words were quite reasonable; in fact, it was the best option. As long as Wang Chao ran away, who would know where he was? But for Wang Chao, there was only one path—Yiyi and Yang Mengying were here, and he naturally wouldn't go anywhere else.
Wang Chao smiled and said, "Alright then, I'll just run away when the time comes. I'll go off on my own."
Looking into Wang Chao's determined eyes, Shen Zhitao couldn't help but laugh. Her eyes narrowed into charming slits; he looked so carefree. But in reality, he was bound by various "strings." Such a contradictory person. Shen Zhitao found Wang Chao increasingly interesting.
In the afternoon, Wang Chao was summoned alone to Huangfu Ling's office.
When he pushed the door open and entered, he found no sign of Huangfu Ling. He thought to himself, this brother called me here and now leaves me hanging? Just as Wang Chao was lost in thought, he felt a rush of wind behind him. Instinctively, he sidestepped and saw the glint of a dagger flash past his neck. If he had been even a moment slower, it would have pierced him.
Wang Chao spun around to execute a spinning kick.
However, at that moment, the dagger appeared right where Wang Chao was about to land. He braced himself with all his might to halt his spin at the cost of injuring himself. By then, the dagger was already pressed against his throat, leaving him unable to make any further movements. Wang Chao knew that as long as the owner of the dagger wished it, he wouldn't survive to see another moment.
Sweat beads rolled down his forehead. Who was trying to kill him?
"Your awareness is good, but your skills are lacking." The voice came through, and to Wang Chao's surprise, it was Huangfu Ling's voice. The dagger was pulled away from Wang Chao's neck. He turned to look, and the person holding the dagger was none other than Huangfu Ling. Wang Chao let out a long breath, realizing that if he encountered an opponent like Huangfu Ling, he would be dead within two moves.
His own strength was still too weak.
"How can I train to be like you?" Wang Chao asked earnestly.
"Like me?" Huangfu Ling appeared quite serious and then said, "You probably won't be able to achieve this level. However, within five years, reaching half of my ability should still be possible."
Wang Chao sneered inwardly, but his expression remained unchanged, still wearing an admiring look. He replied, "Really? If I could reach half of your level, I would be very pleased." Flattery never fails; Wang Chao had learned how to sweet-talk his way into getting candy from his aunt when he was five. Huangfu Ling was only in his thirties and a member of the Seven Great Families, so pride was natural for him. Wang Chao had known this since the first day he met him.
"Your foundation is still somewhat lacking. If you can return safely from this mission, I'll make an exception and give you a manual that I heard was obtained from the Zhang Family," Huangfu Ling said while sitting on the sofa. Wang Chao immediately responded, "That would be great! I promise to complete the mission!"
"Good!" As soon as the mission was mentioned, Huangfu Ling's expression turned serious. He then asked, "Do you know what powers our city?"
"Nuclear power," Wang Chao naturally knew.
"The military took control of that area immediately. However, we have lost contact with them for three days now. During these three days, many people have been sent there, but without exception, none have returned. This situation is beyond what the military can handle. Your task is to go there and investigate what exactly happened."
Huangfu Ling continued, "Originally, this mission wouldn't involve sending a newcomer, but due to that incident, Li Dewei specifically requested that you go alone. You should understand that if it weren't for my protection, you would have already met your end."
Wang Chao nodded seriously.
"So, good luck to you. Our vehicle will take you to the nearest location; after that, everything will be up to you," Huangfu Ling said. "You only have two days to prepare. In such a short time, I can't teach you much; I can only briefly cover some basics about firearms."
Two days passed in a flash. Wang Chao spent one day learning how to use firearms, while the remaining day was spent with Yiyi, clinging to Yang Mengying, making her feel a bit awkward. However, Dean Yang remained as enthusiastic as ever, insisting on having Wang Chao and Yiyi over for dinner at their home. Yang Mengying's mother, upon seeing Wang Chao, bombarded him with questions as if he were truly Yang Mengying's boyfriend or even their future son-in-law.
That evening, Wang Chao and Yang Mengying stood on the balcony of the second floor, gazing at the stars in the cold winter sky. Yang Mengying said, "If it weren't for the zombie outbreak, I would still be a small employee at the company, and you would still be that fresh graduate." Hearing her reminisce about the past made Wang Chao feel a bit sentimental. He replied, "Yeah, life is always unpredictable; no one knows what will happen tomorrow."
What would happen tomorrow? Previously, a team of soldiers sent to the nuclear power plant had mysteriously vanished. Now he found himself forced to venture alone into that unknown territory. Would he end up like the others—missing without a trace—or would he manage to return by some stroke of luck? Or perhaps he would truly run away and never come back?
These thoughts were beyond Wang Chao's comprehension at that moment.
"I've been wanting to ask you a question," Wang Chao said softly. "After sharing an apartment for six months, I haven't seen you with a boyfriend. Why is that?"
Yang Mengying didn't answer immediately; she simply replied, "Guess."
