The next day, as Wang Chao was leaving, he did not bid farewell to Yiyi and Yang Mengying. He didn't want them to think that his mission was particularly dangerous. Early in the morning, Wang Chao saw Li Dewei waiting by the iron gate, seemingly intent on watching him leave through the large iron doors. To Wang Chao's surprise, Li Dewei actually followed the convoy.
After the Zombie outbreak, the military had cleared a path outside the Refugee Zone, but this path was not infinitely long. Huangfu Ling could only take Wang Chao as close as possible.
"This is the closest point to the Nuclear Power Plant," Huangfu Ling said. "If you head west from here, you'll find it. We'll stay here for five days. If you haven't returned in two days, we'll leave. Take this radio with you; although the chances of it working are slim."
Wang Chao nodded, checked his gear one last time, and got out of the vehicle.
Huangfu Ling and her team parked at the street corner, forming a Daoist-style barrier. This way, even if a large number of Zombies surged toward them, they could hold them off temporarily. Huangfu Ling instructed a squad of soldiers, "Go check the Zombie situation in the nearby buildings. Li Zhi, head upstairs for sniper cover. The rest of you, set up camp..." With a series of commands issued, the group deployed quickly and efficiently.
Wang Chao listened to their orders and couldn't help but admire Huangfu Ling's decisive nature as he headed west.
To avoid attracting more Zombies, Wang Chao had to abandon his plan to ride a motorcycle and opted to proceed on foot instead. According to Huangfu Ling's calculations, it would take him at least a day and a half to reach this point if he moved quickly. A round trip would require at least three days—assuming no unexpected situations arose along the way. With that in mind, Wang Chao knew he had to move at full speed.
Understanding this well, Wang Chao pressed on without delay.
Along the way, he tried not to fire his weapon and chose instead to use his knife. This not only conserved ammunition but also helped avoid attracting more Zombies. In fact, throughout the day, Wang Chao encountered very few formidable Zombies. Soon enough, it was the next day, and he had reached the vicinity of the nuclear power plant. The area had few buildings and no industrial facilities; instead, there was a relatively large pasture for safety reasons.
In the pasture, there were scattered single-story houses.
Wang Chao paused; something felt off here. As soon as he stepped onto this land, he sensed it—there was an eerie silence. He couldn't hear any rustling sounds from Zombies or even the chirping of insects. Every step felt cautious until suddenly, on the other side of the pasture, a shadow appeared that made him hold back a shout.
This thing was enormous!
The shadow stood nearly three stories tall—over nine meters high—taking on a humanoid form covered in black fur. It resembled an enlarged black bear by four or five times its size. With each step it took, the ground trembled beneath it. Wang Chao looked up at its face and saw two massive black holes where eyes should be; there were no eyeballs inside them. Dark red clots of blood had congealed around its eye sockets, giving it a terrifying and grotesque appearance.
Wang Chao tried to tread lightly, not wanting to attract the attention of that creature.
After taking a few more steps forward, Wang Chao spotted a trail of blood on the grass. The bloodstain was about the width of a person, suggesting that someone had crawled through or had been dragged along, leaving this mark. Following the trail, Wang Chao found it leading directly to the door of a small house. The person he sought was likely just behind this dwelling.
Wang Chao pushed the door open and heard a sharp click—the sound of a bullet being chambered. He could see the man clearly now; he was dressed in military attire, with a large gaping wound in his abdomen, his intestines spilling out. Death was imminent, and the wound appeared to be torn open as if by some monstrous force. Upon realizing that Wang Chao was not a zombie, the man's arm fell limply to his side.
Wang Chao rushed forward to check on him, desperate to do something, but it was futile; the injury was too severe. Death was only a matter of time.
The man noticed Wang Chao's military uniform and weakly asked, "Are you sent by the army?"
"Yes," Wang Chao replied quickly. "The Nuclear Power Plant has lost contact, and I've been ordered to investigate. What happened here?"
"Run... run... the Nuclear Power Plant... it won't hold much longer... leakage..." As he spoke, the man coughed up a mouthful of blood before continuing, "Tell Commander Lei that the reactor here is extremely unstable. An explosion is only a matter of time!"
Explosion, leakage, nuclear reactor—a series of words flooded Wang Chao's mind, making him feel as though the apocalypse was truly upon them. Even if he wasn't an expert in these matters, he understood that a nuclear leak was no trivial issue. If an explosion occurred, this city would become a true ghost town.
"What about the others?" Wang Chao asked urgently. "Where are they? Why haven't they contacted headquarters?"
"The radio is down," the man gasped weakly, his life hanging by a thread. "The others are performing final shutdown procedures. I... I was responsible for communications, but unfortunately... I encountered that huge monster as soon as I came out." Wang Chao frowned; it became clear that this man's injury had been inflicted by that monstrous creature.
"You must get out of here and then..." The man coughed up more blood before his head tilted to one side, his pupils dilating. Wang Chao shook his head and closed the man's eyes gently. From his words, it was evident that the Nuclear Power Plant's reactor was already in an unstable state and at risk of exploding. Just then, however, the man suddenly opened his eyes again, trembling as he reached into his chest pocket and pulled out a document.
"Deliver..." he managed to say before closing his eyes once more, motionless.
Wang Chao looked down and found a danger assessment report for the Nuclear Power Plant. Taking the document, he noticed that the pristine white paper was completely free of bloodstains. Despite the large gaping hole in the man's abdomen and his clothes being soaked red, this document remained untouched by blood, indicating how much this person valued it. It was clear that even when attacked by a monster, he did not forget his mission.
This was a Chinese Soldier.
Wang Chao carefully put away the document and stood tall, saluting with the most standard military precision, without a single flaw. Such a person deserved Wang Chao's respect. After completing this act, Wang Chao did not linger but continued toward the Nuclear Power Plant, where another team of soldiers awaited; he needed to see what was happening there.
