No one knew who fired the first shot, but soon the gunfire rang out incessantly, showing no signs of stopping. "Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" Old Lei's voice blared from the loudspeaker. In such a dense crowd, the chances of hitting Mourning Lion were far lower than hitting an innocent bystander. As expected, Mourning Lion remained unharmed, but many others fell victim to the bullets.
"Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" Da Qiang shouted hoarsely while trying to disperse the crowd.
However, by this point, panic had set in. Everyone was terrified, fearing they would be the next to fall. The saying goes, "Better a friend die than oneself," and as long as they survived, they couldn't care less about others. Just then, a soldier in front of Da Qiang lost his sanity and fired at Mourning Lion in the distance, completely disregarding the civilians in between.
The bullet's trajectory was aimed right at a crying little boy. Seeing this, Da Qiang lunged forward, trying to shield the boy with his own body. Wang Chao witnessed this unfold and rushed forward, striking the soldier's weapon with his black knife and knocking it away before delivering a swift blow that knocked the soldier unconscious. However, several bullets had already struck Da Qiang.
Wang Chao hurried to check on him and saw multiple bullets lodged in Da Qiang's back, blood flowing freely. "Are you trying to get yourself killed?" he exclaimed.
Da Qiang chuckled sheepishly and replied, "It's nothing, just a small injury!"
But this was not the time for casual conversation. Wang Chao said firmly, "Take care of the remaining Mourning Lions!" Da Qiang nodded and followed Wang Chao toward the nearest Mourning Lion.
Panic spread like an infectious disease; one person fled, then ten, then hundreds scattered in all directions. Within moments, nearly a hundred people had vanished without a trace. Old Lei watched this scene unfold, veins bulging on his forehead as he could no longer contain his anger. He punched out fiercely, shattering the tempered glass with cracks spreading across its surface. "Little Lei! Little Lei! Hurry and save those civilians!"
Captain Lei nodded and replied, "I guarantee we'll complete the mission."
Leading two squads of elite soldiers—far superior in skill and quality compared to their counterparts—Captain Lei raised his hand and shouted, "Follow me! Remember, do not fire recklessly! Protect the civilians!" With that, he led his troops toward where Mourning Lion was located, moving with authority and agility.
This was true elite force.
Huangfu Ling arrived at the location where the plane was parked almost immediately. In his mind, even a hundred civilians could not compare to the value of one life here. The time required to start up the plane was not short; its roar echoed across the land. Two Mourning Lions were drawn toward it. Although the researchers were terrified, they weren't overly afraid; after all, the plane was made of alloy and even its windows were reinforced tempered glass. No matter how formidable those Mourning Lions were, they stood no chance against this steel beast.
At that moment, a Mourning Lion charged directly in front of the helicopter, leaping towards it. Its sharp claws struck the windshield, creating cracks that spread rapidly.
"Take off, hurry!" the pilot shouted, gripping the controls tightly.
The relentless blows only widened the fissures until there was a loud crack as the tempered glass shattered under the force of the Mourning Lion's attack. Countless shards of glass sprayed into the cabin, causing gasps and cries of alarm from those inside. No one expected this Mourning Lion to be so powerful that it could break tempered glass. It was not surprising; many people outside could shatter such glass, let alone a Mourning Lion.
The helicopter began to ascend, but the Mourning Lion's claws struck again, and it seemed the pilot was about to meet his end as the helicopter threatened to crash. Just then, the Mourning Lion suddenly halted, as if something had caught its attention. As everyone looked on in confusion, a hand grabbed hold of the Mourning Lion's tail. It was none other than Huangfu Ling, who held onto one Mourning Lion's tail with one hand while using the other to firmly press against the jaw of another Mourning Lion, preventing it from moving.
"Captain Huangfu!" Dean Yang shouted from inside the helicopter. "Be careful!"
"Don't worry about me; they're no match for me. Just take off!" Huangfu Ling yelled at the pilot.
The researchers were saved by Huangfu Ling and had always followed his orders without question. Hearing this, the helicopter pilot did not hesitate; he understood this was a critical moment for survival. Several helicopters circled upward with roaring engines, gradually flying away. The Mourning Lion that Huangfu Ling had restrained turned to pounce at him as it saw the helicopter escape.
Seeing this, Huangfu Ling released both hands simultaneously. The two Mourning Lions had been straining against him and now surged forward at full speed. Huangfu Ling used his momentum to leap into the air; as the two Mourning Lions rushed past him too quickly to avoid him, they collided with a loud crash. Both Mourning Lions were thrown backward by the impact.
At that moment, Huangfu Ling landed gracefully and immediately dashed forward like a cheetah, appearing right in front of one Mourning Lion. The creature opened its mouth to bite him, but Huangfu Ling smirked and placed his hand firmly on its massive jaw, resisting its powerful bite effortlessly with his strength. With a mighty roar, he exerted force and split the Mourning Lion's head apart, splattering brain matter everywhere.
At that instant, another Mourning Lion lunged from behind. Huangfu Ling performed a backflip to evade it as it passed overhead.
In mid-air during his flip, Huangfu Ling kicked out forcefully at the Mourning Lion's belly. Regardless of the animal, its belly is always its weakest point; even a Mourning Lion was no exception. The kick sent it soaring into the air in pain before it could react at all. Huangfu Ling crouched low and pulled the lifeless body of that Mourning Lion closer with one foot while raising one of its claws above his head, steadying himself as he prepared for what came next.
At that moment, the Mourning Lion flying overhead had descended with a soft thud. Its belly landed precisely on the claws of another Mourning Lion. In an instant, intestines spilled out as Huangfu Ling gripped the sharp claws and forcefully sliced forward, brutally disemboweling the Mourning Lion. He pushed the corpse of the Mourning Lion aside and crawled out from underneath.
He emerged, drenched in blood, as if he had just stepped out of a pool of it.
Wiping the blood from his face, Huangfu Ling furrowed his brow and gazed silently at the chaotic crowd in the distance.
