The danger had been resolved, and the three of them had signaled to the others to continue moving forward. The members of the Bioterrorism Security Department gathered again. Throughout the journey, Wang Chao was worried that Little Wolf would make a sound and attract attention, but fortunately, Little Wolf remained silent. It seemed to be asleep in the backpack, and seeing that no one else was paying attention, Wang Chao finally relaxed.
After three more days of travel, they encountered no significant dangers. Wang Chao thought that even if there were mutated creatures, they were likely herbivores and posed little threat. Along the way, they did come across some people who had turned into Zombies while chopping wood or camping in the mountains, but they posed no real threat and were easily dealt with by the Bioterrorism Security Department.
During this time, Wang Chao and Shen Zhitao racked their brains over Little Wolf's situation, always on guard against any sounds it might make. They found it strange that Little Wolf had not made any noise; it only emitted soft whines when it was with Wang Chao and Shen Zhitao. This almost led Wang Chao to believe that Little Wolf was mute. The little wolf was surprisingly well-behaved, lacking any wild instincts typical of its kind. Wang Chao wondered if he would have to take on the role of a "mother" to teach it.
One day, under the pretense of needing to relieve himself, Wang Chao took Little Wolf away to feed it. The usually obedient and quiet Little Wolf suddenly showed no interest in the food before it. Its body tensed up, fur bristling, and it let out a low growl from its throat. It seemed to be biting at Wang Chao's pant leg as if trying to urge him to leave. Wang Chao furrowed his brow and looked in the direction where Little Wolf was focused.
He could see a vague outline beyond the branches but could not discern what lay behind them. However, he knew that animals had a much keener sense than humans. What appeared to be nothing behind those branches surely concealed something that posed a threat to Little Wolf. But what could it be? Carefully, Wang Chao lifted Little Wolf and placed it back in his backpack.
At that moment, he suddenly felt a shift in the air behind him—a strange breeze stirred. When he turned around, he saw someone standing behind him. The figure appeared to be a young man in his twenties, looking about Wang Chao's age. He had striking features, especially his sharp eyebrows that added to his handsome appearance. A faint smile played on his lips as he said, "This little creature is quite adorable."
Wang Chao glanced at the man's hand and felt a surge of dread; Little Wolf was being held by him. It seemed to sense the threat and was desperately biting at the man's fingers, but the outcome was predictable. A cold sweat broke out on Wang Chao's back; this was the most formidable person he had encountered so far—without exception. Even when Huangfu Ling had ambushed him before, he had managed to evade an attack.
But facing this young man now, Wang Chao realized that if this person had intended to harm him instead of just holding Little Wolf, he would have had no chance to escape. He hadn’t even sensed any dangerous aura emanating from this individual—truly unfathomable. He wondered who this person was and what he was doing here.
Wang Chao cautiously asked, "Who are you?"
The young man stroked Little Wolf with one hand while keeping the other behind his back. At that moment, he extended his other hand forward in a gesture for a handshake. When Wang Chao looked at it closely, he saw that the man's hand was covered in blood that was still flowing; some areas had already begun to congeal into clots as if layers of blood had stained his hand.
Wang Chao stared in shock before finally extending his own hand to shake with him.
The young man said, "Oh, my name is Zhang Fusheng."
"My name is Wang Chao." Wang Chao could hardly believe that one day he would encounter such a strange person in this remote mountain forest, yet here he was, engaging in such formal greetings. It was surreal, truly surreal, Wang Chao thought to himself.
The man nodded with a smile and seemed to be talking to himself, saying, "The old man asked me to clear out the monsters in Yucheng. There are just too many Zombies; it won't be easy to get rid of them all at once. I can't disobey the old man's orders, so I came up here to hunt for some entertainment. But this Little Wolf shouldn't count as a monster, right? I already have plenty of pets at home. Never mind, I'll return it to you."
With that, the man tossed the Little Wolf back. Wang Chao hurriedly caught it, fearing it might get hurt. He cursed the man's ancestors silently but managed to keep a neutral expression on his face. The Little Wolf calmed down in Wang Chao's hands, and he quickly placed it back into his backpack, worried that this Zhang Fusheng might do something strange again.
Listening to Zhang Fusheng's muttering, Wang Chao understood the man's purpose for being here; it seemed he had been sent by an elder in his family to deal with the Zombies in Yucheng. Who would ask their descendants to do such things? It was absurd. Suddenly, Wang Chao recalled that the head of the Seven Great Families had the surname Zhang. Could this Zhang Fusheng be from the Zhang Family?
"What are you doing here? Walking your pet?" Zhang Fusheng asked seriously.
If Wang Chao hadn't seen the serious expression on Zhang Fusheng's face, he would have thought he was joking. But if he was genuinely asking that question, it was downright silly. Wang Chao felt like asking Zhang Fusheng if he was messing with him. "Yeah," Wang Chao replied, "the weather is nice today, so I brought my pet out for a walk."
Zhang Fusheng nodded and looked up at the sky. It was indeed a clear day; winter had arrived, but the sun was still pleasant.
"Oh, then you carry on. It's about time for me to head home," Zhang Fusheng said.
"Home?" Wang Chao asked. "How are you getting back?"
"Of course I'm walking back," Zhang Fusheng replied. "I came here on foot."
"Where is your home?" Wang Chao inquired.
"My family used to live in Yucheng, but we moved to the capital later," Zhang Fusheng answered.
"Are you saying...?" Wang Chao asked, his mouth agape. "Did you walk all the way from the Imperial Capital?"
"That's right," Zhang Fusheng replied.
"How long did it take you?" Wang Chao asked, suppressing his shock. He knew that this person must have arrived after the Zombie outbreak. Did he really come on the very first day of the outbreak? But looking at him, he didn't seem like it.
"Oh, I walked for three days and stayed here for two. It's time for me to go. Goodbye." Zhang Fusheng waved at Wang Chao and then vanished in an instant right before Wang Chao's eyes. Shocked, Wang Chao looked around but found no trace of Zhang Fusheng, as if he had magically disappeared. Could Zhang Fusheng really be that fast? If so, was he even human?
Wang Chao suddenly thought of himself. Although he had never used his Bone Knife skill in front of others, he could clearly feel the presence of the Bone Knife within him.
So, was he also considered human?
