It was already the third day of being besieged. Due to the previous journey over mountains and through valleys, everyone had only packed a few days' worth of food. The original plan was to quickly clear out a Safe Zone in Yucheng and then send the troops to search for supplies. However, on the very first day of their arrival, they encountered those black monsters, which dealt a heavy blow to everyone. The appearance of Zhang Fusheng undoubtedly served as a shot of adrenaline for the group, but before they could celebrate, they found themselves surrounded by tens of thousands of Zombies.
"Here, have some," Wang Chao said. "I'm not hungry." He shared his rations with Xiao Wei and looked down at the densely packed Zombies below, feeling a shiver run down his spine. Shen Zhitao also looked worriedly at the Zombies that surrounded the entire neighborhood, shaking his head repeatedly. Da Qiang scratched his head and muttered, "If you ask me, we might as well go down and fight them; this is just too frustrating."
Wang Chao replied, "How do you think your strength compares to Zhang Fusheng's?"
Da Qiang admitted, "Of course I'm not as strong as that Brother."
"If he doesn't have confidence in fighting them off, what chance do you think you have?" Wang Chao said helplessly.
Da Qiang scratched his head again and fell silent.
"When will the people from the capital arrive?" Wang Chao asked Shen Zhitao, who was standing nearby. Shen Zhitao didn't look at him but replied calmly, "At the earliest, it will take a few weeks. After all, the transportation lines are paralyzed. If they send fighter jets, it wouldn't take long; however, those sent for rescue may not even reach the capital yet. All we can do now is wait."
Waiting was something no one liked; no one wanted to wait for cars or people, and now they were waiting for death. Everyone trapped in the apartment building shared this thought: waiting was essentially waiting to die. Many had resigned themselves to their fate; those who embraced death were terrifying. Since yesterday, the crime rate in the apartment building had skyrocketed, with sexual crimes rising the fastest.
Thousands of people were scattered across different buildings, and many were unaware of what was happening in others. Wang Chao had witnessed a scene yesterday where a naked girl was being assaulted by a crazed man in an adjacent building. When the girl ultimately jumped from the top floor in despair, everyone could only watch helplessly as she fell into the sea of Zombies below and vanished without a trace. Wang Chao heard her heart-wrenching screams echoing far away but never got a chance to learn what had truly happened there. He suddenly thought that if it weren't for his companions around him, he would have definitely fled.
After all, Zombies wouldn’t bite Wang Chao; this was an ability he possessed after his mutation—whether it was good or bad remained uncertain.
Such is human nature; Wang Chao suddenly recalled those twenty-odd resolute soldiers at the Nuclear Power Plant who blocked fissures with their bodies. He wondered if they had spirits watching over them and saw that they had risked their lives to protect such people; would they sigh deeply at how tragic their deaths were? Wang Chao also thought about Old Lei being stoned by an angry mob and couldn't help but sigh again, thinking that if it ever came to that day of collapse, he would just focus on saving himself—there was nothing here worth remembering without Yiyi and Yang Mengying.
On the morning of the fourth day, everyone from the Bioterrorism Security Department had run out of food. Wang Chao took out some supplies from his Spatial Ring and claimed he had scavenged them from inside the building before distributing them among everyone. He then entered the room where Little Wolf was kept. Looking at the frail Little Wolf he had been feeding, he felt somewhat embarrassed and could only apologize: "Sigh, as a wolf owner, I’ve managed to feed you even thinner than a dog; I’m really not a qualified master. But now that even humans can’t get enough to eat, I can’t take care of you either. In less than three days, there will surely be a great battle between humans and Zombies; when that time comes, I’ll let you go free—whether you can escape or not is up to your own luck."
Little Wolf continued to nuzzle Wang Chao's hand, expressing affection.
A person can survive three days without food.
After another two days, Wang Chao could no longer take food out of the Spatial Ring; doing so would attract too much attention. Fortunately, during these days, Wang Chao had shared half of his rations with others. Shen Zhitao even thought Wang Chao had given up entirely. If it weren't for the fact that Wang Chao still looked relatively well, Shen Zhitao would have questioned him long ago. That afternoon, Wang Chao saw dozens of people jumping out of the window.
Some were hopelessly seeking death, but more were risking their lives, trying to carve a path through the sea of Zombies. After all, starving to death is still death, and being bitten by a Zombie is also death. It was worth a shot; perhaps there was still hope for survival. However, to everyone's disappointment, no one managed to escape the ocean of Zombies. They all understood that even Zhang Fusheng couldn't break free from the tide of tens of thousands of Zombies, let alone ordinary people.
"The capital may send someone, but their speed is too slow!" Huangfu Ling said to Old Lei. "How much ammunition do we have left?"
Old Lei coughed a few times; his white hair had noticeably thinned overnight. He replied, "We have enough bullets, but there are just too many Zombies; there's no way out!"
"Do we have Grenades?" Huangfu Ling asked again.
"Not many, only a few hundred left," Old Lei said. "If we still had tanks, we could blast our way through with a few shells, but now we only have people!"
"People are enough," Huangfu Ling said. "Gather all those Grenades together and detonate them at once to clear a space. Then the troops can create a path for us. As for everyone else, whoever can run should run." Huangfu Ling closed his eyes, constantly furrowing his brow; his right hand gripping the teacup trembled slightly. It was evident that he was extremely tense at this moment.
Zhang Fusheng nodded silently beside him.
After a long silence, Old Lei finally spoke slowly, his voice hoarse as he said, "Those soldiers clearing the way have almost no chance of surviving."
Once again, everyone fell silent. It was clear to all that calling it a path-clearing mission was more like sending in a Suicide Squad or using a darker term—cannon fodder. Wang Chao listened in fear; time was life. At this moment, he finally understood this truth. It was the cruelest method and also the most tragic one. But if they didn't act soon, waiting three more days would leave them too weak to move even if there was a chance to escape.
"Soldier," Old Lei murmured to himself.
Old Lei stood up and said, "Soldier."
