Shen Zhitao and Wang Chao quickly made their way downstairs. Shen Zhitao said, "Given the current situation, the military must be taking action. We've lost our advantage, and now we can only take it one step at a time. I will definitely stand by your side, but I wonder about Zhang Fusheng..." Shen Zhitao's words trailed off, yet Wang Chao understood his meaning. Wang Chao replied, "I consider him a true brother, and I believe he feels the same."
Nodding in agreement, Shen Zhitao and Wang Chao had just exited the community gate when they saw Wu Wan'er rushing over without any regard for her appearance. Before she could catch her breath, she exclaimed, "Brother Wang Chao, you need to run! Run as far as you can! Huangfu Yan has already found Old Zhang!"
At those words, both Wang Chao and Shen Zhitao felt a jolt of alarm. That old fox knew he had been brought back by Zhang Fusheng; there must be an extraordinary connection between them. His finding Old Zhang first was likely an attempt to silence the Zhang Family, after all, the Zhang Family would not turn against Huangfu Yan just for Wang Chao.
In this apocalypse, danger accompanied opportunity. The Huangfu Family was seizing this chance to rise. Wealth held no value in this world; how much could a powerful individual do against zombies? Yet the Huangfu Family had grasped the most crucial element for survival in this new world—an army. Without an army, the Imperial Capital Safe Zone would cease to exist; outside those towering concrete walls lay an unknown number of zombies.
At such a moment, the Huangfu Family was subtly showing signs of becoming the foremost family in Huaxia.
Shen Zhitao said, "With the Zhang Family keeping silent, there’s no force left that can contend with Huangfu Yan. Wang Chao, you must leave here; the farther you run, the better. You cannot stay in the capital..." Before Shen Zhitao could finish speaking, a sharp sound echoed around them—a synchronized click of numerous weapons being readied. It was the unmistakable sound of bullets being chambered.
The three turned to see several squad soldiers had arrived, dozens of gun barrels aimed directly at Wang Chao. The leader spoke up, "The Special Assault Team has located the target; please advise."
"You all should leave," Wang Chao said softly.
"Understood," Wu Wan'er seemed to want to say more but was pulled back by Shen Zhitao and ultimately remained silent.
"Bring him back!" came Colonel Hu's voice over the radio.
"Understood!" the soldier replied.
The special squad slowly advanced, their guns still trained on Wang Chao without any sign of lowering them. Wang Chao complied by raising his hands. Once the squad leader cuffed his hands together, he turned to Shen Zhitao and Wu Wan'er and asked, "Who are you two? What is your relationship with him?" Shen Zhitao glanced at Wang Chao before pulling out his Bioterrorism Security Department identification.
The captain saluted Shen Zhitao and then, without saying a word, took Wang Chao away.
Once they were far off, Wu Wan'er spoke up, "Are you just going to watch them take Brother Wang Chao away?" Shen Zhitao patted Wu Wan'er's shoulder and replied, "There are too many of them, armed and dangerous. We are no match for them. In this situation, we absolutely cannot confront them head-on. Your Brother Wang Chao knows this too, which is why he didn't resist. Come on, we have a lot to do."
Wu Wan'er nodded.
"Commander, Wang Chao has been located and is being brought back to the military district. Please advise," Huangfu Yan's communication device was still on, so everyone present heard this. Zhang Fusheng frowned, sighing inwardly. Huangfu Yan saluted the elder and then turned to leave. Only then did Zhang Fusheng say, "Grandpa, Wang Chao is my friend! I can't just watch him die like this!"
Elder Zhang smiled and replied, "He is your friend, not mine. Do you understand?"
Meanwhile, Wang Chao was already being escorted back to the military district in a vehicle. As Huangfu Yan emerged from the Small Building and saw Wang Chao being dragged out of the car, a smile appeared on his face—though it was a smile that sent chills down one's spine.
"The Cang Wolf Special Assault Team has successfully brought back the target. Please advise!" the captain shouted.
Huangfu Yan said with a grin, "Very good. Truly worthy of being the nation's sharp blade; well done." Just as he finished speaking, Colonel Li arrived with a contingent of several hundred soldiers, all pointing their guns at Wang Chao. Even the special forces captain had never witnessed such a display; he asked, "Is it really necessary to go to such lengths for one person?"
Colonel Li smiled slightly and replied, "If you had seen him transform into a monster back then, you wouldn't say that. However, the fact that he isn't resisting is something I hadn't considered; perhaps his battle with Zhang Fusheng took away that ability." Huangfu Yan nodded and said, "Regardless of the circumstances, once he is in my hands, there will be no chance of escape. Take him away for execution."
Wang Chao understood that once he left this place, it would be as if he walked in standing but came out lying down. However, he knew he couldn't resist here. If he were still able to use his mutated skills freely like before, he would have confidence in carving a bloody path out of here. But now, Wang Chao had no confidence in escaping from those armed soldiers.
"Wait!" Just as Huangfu Yan was about to take Wang Chao away, a voice came from behind: "Grandpa Huangfu, Wang Chao is my friend. I don't understand why you want to kill him."
The speaker was none other than Zhang Fusheng, who stood alone behind Huangfu Yan. Huangfu Yan turned around and gestured for everyone to stop. He said, "He has killed countless soldiers; many have witnessed this. I believe you won't cover for him. Zhang Fusheng, I've watched you grow up; it's best if you remain calm about some matters."
"I naturally know, as I was the one who brought him back," Zhang Fusheng said. "He has killed quite a few people, but that was only after those planes attacked him first. Moreover, without him, those Survivors wouldn't have made it back at all. How many people witnessed that? Grandpa Huangfu, I believe you wouldn't seek personal revenge in this matter. Let's leave it to the judge to handle."
Leaving it to the judge meant it would likely go unaddressed. At this point, was there even a complete legal system in place? Furthermore, once Wang Chao was handed over, getting him back would be no easy task. However, Huangfu Yan was unaware whether this was Zhang Family's intention or just Zhang Fusheng's personal wish. Still, he dared not confront the Zhang Family.
After some serious thought, Huangfu Yan realized it was most likely Zhang Fusheng's personal agenda. Yet even if it were just his personal wish, it carried significant weight. After all, he wouldn't live much longer, and the leader of the third generation would undoubtedly be Zhang Fusheng. If he were to create enmity now, it would certainly not benefit the Huangfu Family. But he could not ignore his son's revenge!
"Commander," Colonel Li whispered in Huangfu Yan's ear, "I have a plan..."
