"Spring arrived, and I planted a fruit tree, which finally bore fruit..." Wang Chao was currently wielding two hoes, loosening the soil with vigorous strokes. The reclamation work on the back mountain was in full swing. This area was indeed a good place for cultivation; it had previously been designated for reforestation, but now, for the sake of survival, it had to be cleared again. The slope here was actually below twenty-five degrees, but with the excellent seeds cultivated, everyone could have food to eat. This was truly an example of how technology changes lives. However, now that high-tech assistance was gone, everyone had to revert to the era of "slash-and-burn" agriculture.
Da Qiang and Tang Feng were still helping Liu Jie with training, while Xiao Wei followed Dean Sun all day for scientific research. Shen Zhiying continued to hide in the armory for her so-called major overhaul, and Shen Zhitao was fully responsible for the construction and renovation of the Safe Zone's houses. Even Yang Mengying went with Wu Wan'er to do some medical work. One had learned since childhood, and the other was the daughter of a top doctor in Huaxia; with both of them around, some ailments became easy to handle. Even Yiyi organized a so-called youth group, leading the children from the Safe Zone to do whatever they could.
Wang Chao really didn't know what else to do, so he picked up two hoes and, gritting his teeth and stomping his feet, went to the back mountain to become a farmer while also acting as a bodyguard for everyone. Although there weren't many zombies on the mountain, there could be mutated animals lurking about. Despite the armed protection from the Safe Zone's soldiers, having Wang Chao around significantly increased their safety.
In just twenty minutes, Wang Chao had cultivated an area that would take others at least two hours to clear. His efficiency had indeed improved considerably. This was strength—being at Silver Upper Tier meant that even as a farmer, he was still the strongest little farmer! After a brief rest leaning against Little Wolf, he noticed that over the past month, Little Wolf had grown nearly four meters long and stood one meter tall. He had frightened quite a few people in the Safe Zone before they realized he was Wang Chao's pet.
"I say, Little Wolf, you're the laziest one in this Safe Zone," Wang Chao remarked. "This kind of thinking won't do; as they say, those who work hard reap rewards while those who don't get nothing. You eat more than anyone else..." Upon hearing Wang Chao's words, Little Wolf let out a series of "woofs," seemingly rebutting him while pushing against Wang Chao's back with his paw as if saying, "If you're not lazy, then stop lying on me..."
After playing around with Little Wolf for a bit, Wang Chao suddenly caught sight of something shimmering in the distance. Although it was just a fleeting moment, he clearly perceived that it wasn't a natural light; it seemed more like a reflection from some mirror. Realizing this made Wang Chao's heart tighten, but he maintained an outward calmness. Slowly rising up, he tugged at Little Wolf.
Little Wolf seemed to understand Wang Chao's intent and stood up. With a swift motion, Wang Chao mounted Little Wolf's back as he dashed forward. "Over there," Wang Chao whispered. Little Wolf understood immediately and sprinted toward that direction. As a mutated wild wolf and a rare white wolf at that, Little Wolf's strength was certainly on par with Wang Chao’s; if not for Little Wolf lacking any combat skills, he would definitely be considered a Silver Upper Tier expert.
Like the wind in motion and as fast as an arrow, within mere seconds Little Wolf brought Wang Chao to where he pointed. Dismounting from Little Wolf's back, Wang Chao searched carefully; how could there be mirrors on the back mountain? The only explanation was that someone had brought a mirror up there or perhaps it wasn't a mirror at all but rather the scope of a sniper rifle!
Though this was merely Wang Chao's speculation, an undeniable feeling that something was about to happen filled him with urgency. This sensation is something everyone possesses—commonly referred to as intuition! However, as human intelligence has developed and become more rational over time, this primal feeling has faded somewhat; yet with increasing strength comes a gradual rediscovery of this deep-seated instinct.
Suddenly without hesitation, Wang Chao charged forward just as a bullet fired from afar.
A shield appeared and vanished in an instant. The bullet fell directly to the ground as Wang Chao maintained his speed toward where it had come from. A figure jumped down from a tree; Wang Chao swung his Bone Knife for an overhead strike. But at that moment, a sword sliced through from the side with great force, sending countless twigs flying and blocking Wang Chao’s fierce attack.
Both retreated a step; only then did Wang Chao see clearly that his opponent was clad in white garments that shone like snow and sported long hair—a sight that momentarily transported him back to ancient times. Looking behind him revealed none other than Eagle Eye—the sharpshooter under Huangfu Ling’s command whom he had encountered before in the imperial capital. Due to Wang Chao mistakenly killing Huangfu Yan’s son, they found themselves locked in an unending conflict. Previously it had been Eagle Eye who kidnapped Yiyi and Wu Wan'er; if not for Wang Chao breaking through to Silver Mid-Tier at a critical moment and killing Mountain Gale, it would have been uncertain who would have met their end instead.
However, it was said that Huangfu Yan had taken those people from Yucheng to the northwest. How could his subordinates appear here? Wang Chao knew that Huangfu Yan would definitely send someone to find him, but he never expected that Huangfu Yan's people would arrive so quickly! He had to kill these two individuals; otherwise, the Safe Zone would be exposed. With Huangfu Yan's strength, the Safe Zone would be in grave danger!
Eagle Eye was only at the lower silver level, and in close combat, his strength could be disregarded. The person in front of him, although only at Silver Mid-Tier, had skills in swordsmanship that Wang Chao could tell were exceptional. However, with himself and Little Wolf together, dealing with these two should be more than enough! Just as Wang Chao was about to take action, he heard a voice call out, “Retreat! We are no match for them!”
In an instant, Wang Chao saw something thrown toward him. Instinctively, he slashed with his Bone Knife. The object split in half, releasing a large amount of powder. Wang Chao closed his eyes and stepped back a few paces. When he opened his eyes again, he found that the two people and the one who spoke had vanished. Wang Chao frowned and looked around; only then did he realize that they had truly disappeared.
“Little Wolf, we’re going back!” Wang Chao said. Things had escalated significantly!
