“Liu Jie?” Upon hearing Yang Mengying's words, Wang Chao furrowed his brows. He had been in contact with Liu Jie for a month now, and during this time, he had been diligently training the new recruits, never engaging in anything that would endanger the Safe Zone. Otherwise, as a former scout, he could easily secure a good position under Commander Yu. With this thought in mind, Wang Chao said, “Follow me. It's time to hold a team meeting.”
The two of them wasted no time and quickly returned to the Safe Zone, gathering all the team members, including Li Mao. Wu Wan'er slightly tilted her head and briefly explained Li Mao's injuries to everyone; they were minor wounds that would heal with a few days of rest. Wang Chao nodded and did not dwell on the matter further. He continued, “Today, Yang Mengying was almost abducted by someone who is one of Huangfu Yan's subordinates—the White-Clad Swordsman I mentioned before.”
Everyone nodded in understanding, but only Li Mao looked confused. Wang Chao recounted the deep-seated enmity between the two before continuing, “Today, it was Liu Jie who called Yang Mengying out. I don’t know why he did this, but he is the chief instructor of the Safe Zone, so I couldn’t question him directly. Li Mao, I have a task for you.” Li Mao sat up straight and asked, “What’s the task?”
“Keep an eye on Liu Jie.” Li Mao nodded and replied, “I’ll go right now!”
“Good,” Wang Chao said. “If he does anything suspicious, notify me immediately!”
Watching Li Mao leave, Wang Chao slightly curled his lips. Xiao Wei looked at him with a smile. Wang Chao remarked, “I’ve been having a bad feeling lately; there have been too many unbelievable events happening recently. If I were to recount them all, it might take days—disappearing zombie hordes, countless casualties at the Mass Grave, Huangfu Yan’s subordinates lurking around… and that mysterious Mucus… all these things are driving me crazy.”
Xiao Wei glanced at Wang Chao and said, “Let’s stick to our plan. We’ll face whatever comes our way; in times of danger when the enemy is hidden and we are exposed, this is our best option. Don’t forget what we discussed earlier.”
The others exchanged glances, but Wang Chao nodded. That day, no one knew what Wang Chao and Xiao Wei had discussed privately in the room; however, since they didn’t speak about it openly in front of everyone, it was clear there were underlying reasons for their secrecy. Wang Chao said, “Then let’s proceed with caution…” Before he could finish his sentence, Xiao Wei suddenly began to convulse.
“Oh no!” This thought raced through everyone’s minds. Since arriving in Jing City from the imperial capital, they had never seen Xiao Wei like this. Wu Wan'er even thought Xiao Wei might be having a sudden stroke and rushed to check on him. The others understood that this was Xiao Wei sensing danger; the greater the threat, the more violently he trembled. During the most perilous moments in Yucheng, Xiao Wei had reacted just like this.
“I… I sense a strong danger coming from all directions… everything around is engulfed in darkness!” Xiao Wei stammered.
“Let’s go outside and take a look!” Wang Chao commanded. “Wan'er, stay here with Xiao Wei. Da Qiang, gather the guards! The rest of you follow me!” As they spoke and moved forward, they reached the outskirts of the villa area. “Commander! Commander! Something's wrong! Something's wrong!” A soldier came running towards them.
“What’s going on?” Wang Chao asked.
"According to the Outpost, a large number of Zombies have appeared at the main gate..." said the soldier. Before Wang Chao could respond, another soldier rushed over and said, "Commander, Commander, a large number of Zombies have been spotted five kilometers from the side gate!" Wang Chao's heart sank. Just earlier, he had heard that up to a million Zombies had gathered there. How could it be that today, so many Zombies were emerging all over the Safe Zone? He had just returned and hadn’t seen any Zombies on his way back. Where were these Zombies coming from?
But now was not the time to dwell on such thoughts. Wang Chao quickly said, "Tang Feng, you and Liu Jie meet up shortly. Make sure the guards are armed. Shen Zhiying, gather the civilians in the Safe Zone and have them retreat to the back gate. It’s backed by high mountains; if the Safe Zone can’t hold against the Zombies, that will be our only escape route. Damn it! Where are these Zombies coming from?"
"Yang Mengying, help Shen Zhiying with crowd control. Make sure to calm the residents down. Go quickly!" Wang Chao continued. "Peach, keep an eye on that person. You should know who I’m talking about by now. I need to head to the main gate!" Shen Zhitao looked at Wang Chao and said, "You can hide it from everyone else, but not from me!" Wang Chao smiled and replied, "I knew I couldn’t keep it from you, which is why I told you in advance!"
With that, Wang Chao whistled.
In a flash, moving at Little Wolf's speed, Wang Chao arrived at the main gate of the Safe Zone. There he found it surrounded by Guards responsible for patrolling and standing watch today. Upon seeing Wang Chao arrive, everyone seemed to gain a pillar of support. Wang Chao asked, "What’s going on?" A Guard replied, "The Outpost reported that a massive wave of Zombies suddenly appeared five kilometers from the Safe Zone—there are so many we can’t even count them!"
Wang Chao felt anxious inside but didn’t show it on his face. He calmly said, "Don’t be afraid; we have high walls and weapons. As long as we don’t go out, those Zombies can’t harm us! Let me take a look first!" With that, Wang Chao took two steps at a time up the ladder and quickly reached the watchtower. "Over there! Over there! Countless Zombies..."
The young soldier looked about fifteen or sixteen years old. Although he had seen his fair share of Zombies before, he had never witnessed such a dense horde. His speech faltered as he spoke. Wang Chao patted his shoulder to signal him to calm down. The young soldier took a few deep breaths and then said, "When I was enslaved by that thing named Yu, I faced all sorts of dangers; I’m not afraid now that I have a weapon..."
Wang Chao didn’t respond at that moment but took the young soldier’s binoculars and looked into the distance. What he saw made even him gasp in shock: through the binoculars, he saw tens of thousands of Zombies surging forward like a tide, advancing towards the Safe Zone at a pace akin to a child’s walk. At this rate, they would reach the Safe Zone in just a few hours!
Wang Chao even noticed that among the ordinary Zombies were numerous Advanced Zombies that had evolved after their initial forms—Zombie Dogs and other early evolved types were countless as well. There were also enormous fat Zombies towering seven or eight meters high and grotesque creatures covered in tentacles continuously spewing Mucus...
