"Don't let your guard down!" Wang Chao said. "Since the last time was a feint, this time it must be as well!" The others, hearing his command, dared not relax in the slightest; no one knew what kind of plot lay behind the retreat of the Zombies. Wang Chao shouted to everyone, "Among this group of Zombies, there must be one or several leading Zombies that can control the actions of the others in some mysterious way, or issue commands to them!"
"Everyone, keep your eyes peeled. If you notice any unusual reactions, make sure to report it! The key to our victory in this battle may lie right here!" Wang Chao frowned as he observed the Zombie Tide changing again. The sky was growing darker, and under the cover of those massive Zombies, he could only see vague shapes in the distance; it was unclear if they were indeed starting to change formation.
"Prepare the floodlights, quickly!" If night fell completely, everyone would undoubtedly lose their vision. Wang Chao had not forgotten how silent and stealthy the Black Monsters had been during their encounter in Yucheng. They clung to walls like geckos, utterly still, killing without a sound. If such monsters infiltrated their ranks, the consequences would be unimaginable.
The order was passed down, but half an hour later, the searchlights atop the high walls remained eerily calm and showed no signs of activity. Wang Chao inhaled sharply and then asked, "What the hell is going on? Turn on the lights!" After a few minutes, a chubby soldier ran up and reported, "Sir, the wires... they’ve been damaged..."
"What!" Wang Chao could not contain his anger and grabbed the collar of the chubby soldier. At such a critical moment to have a breakdown was unacceptable; without the searchlights, they were like blind men. How could they possibly see any movements from the Zombies with just their naked eyes in this gloomy weather? Were they really expected to react only when the Zombies were right in front of them?
The chubby soldier was startled by Wang Chao's murderous aura and stammered, "I... I went with the other engineering team to check it. Every night, a few searchlights are supposed to turn on, but today... today those wires must have been damaged today. It's my fault; I didn’t notice..."
Wang Chao knew these people were responsible for maintaining the Safe Zone's electrical systems and checked them diligently every day. But today, things had gone awry unexpectedly; they were momentarily flustered. Wang Chao suppressed his inner fury, knowing this was not the time for outbursts. He quickly said, "I'm sorry; I acted impulsively. You must restore power as quickly as possible. Whether or not the Safe Zone can remain secure now depends on you!" The chubby soldier wiped away his nervous sweat and replied, "We will complete the task!"
With that, he dashed off from the platform; his plump figure looked somewhat comical while running, but to everyone else’s eyes, it was the most beautiful sight of running because each step he took was crucial for the crisis facing the Safe Zone. "Lower your guns and fire!" Liu Jie shouted at that moment. As the commander of the Safe Zone, Liu Jie’s orders were always followed without question.
Flames erupted like fireworks exploding high in the air. Wang Chao immediately understood Liu Jie’s intention: first, they could suppress the Zombies' advance with bullets; second, they could use the flames to observe Zombie movements more clearly. However, this visibility was intermittent and could not compare to the sustained brightness of searchlights.
This reminded Wang Chao of horror movies where lights flickered intermittently; with each dimming came eerie apparitions appearing closer each time until finally revealing themselves under that last flicker of light. Humans have an innate fear of darkness; what lay before him was indeed a real monster.
Wang Chao did not want to see a monstrous face appear before him illuminated by gunfire.
Fortunately, thanks to the light from gunfire, he could see that those Zombies were still retreating. It seemed that the strategy of the Giant Zombie had failed; having discovered its weakness meant that attacking its eyes would not only take down this Giant Zombie but also crush about a thousand other Zombies beneath it when it fell—a strategy that was undoubtedly a failure for them.
So, was it the leaders of the Zombies who recognized the failure of this strategy and chose to retreat?
“How long will it take to restore power?” Wang Chao shouted.
After a moment, a Messenger ran up to Wang Chao and said, “The power lines have been severely damaged. It seems they were cut with sharp tools. It’s impossible to repair them in just a few hours!”
“A few hours?” Wang Chao cursed. “Are you kidding me? In a few hours, the Zombies will be crawling all over you! Tell that fat guy that if the power isn’t restored within an hour, I’ll be the first to feed him to the Zombies! Wu Lu, where are you?”
“Here!” Wu Lu replied.
“You take a squad of Guards and assist in protecting the power lines. Ensure the safety of the electricity supply. Once it’s restored, it must not go out again; otherwise, I’ll deal with you according to military law! Do you understand?” At that moment, Wang Chao's voice was slightly hoarse but still resonated with authority. Wu Lu, being a passionate man, shouted back, “I guarantee to complete the mission! If I can’t, I’ll come back to see you with my head!”
With that, Wu Lu took a squad of Guards and followed the Messenger.
Wang Chao continued to observe the situation of the Zombies through the flames. It seemed that the Zombies had indeed stopped their assault. Without delay, Wang Chao shouted, “Alright, now listen to my orders: take turns going to eat, but make it quick!” Saying this, Wang Chao didn’t hesitate and jumped down from the ten-meter-high platform. At this moment, the women were also busy; some were still blocking the iron door while others were transporting ammunition and supplies.
“Wang Chao!” As soon as Wang Chao landed, Yang Mengying was the first to rush over. The bowl she held contained rice that had already hardened from being left out. After battling all day long, both physically and mentally exhausted, Wang Chao grabbed the hard rice with his hands; it felt like he was eating small stones. But he couldn’t afford to think about that anymore.
Yang Mengying carefully wiped the sweat off Wang Chao's forehead. There was no time for words as Wang Chao dashed back toward the platform again.
