Half an hour had passed, and everyone was still eating in order. Ammunition continued to be transported in a steady stream, and by the end, it was the women and children who were responsible for carrying the supplies. All the men in the Safe Zone were either fighting on the front lines against the Zombies or were busy in the factory collecting shell casings to be remade into bullets for use. In the early stages of industrial development, human labor became the most important productive force.
“How's it going?” Wang Chao asked Liu Jie, who was holding a night vision telescope. Liu Jie let out a sigh of relief and turned to Wang Chao, saying, “They really have retreated. However, there are tall buildings behind them. I can't tell if they are hiding behind the structures or if they have genuinely pulled back... But at least we can finally take a break!”
Wang Chao nodded and shouted to those around him, “Put down your guns; don’t waste ammunition. Do we have any flares?”
“Report, Commander. Each team has only one flare,” Old Gu said at that moment. “That means we have a total of fifteen flares!”
“Good!” Wang Chao patted Old Gu on the shoulder and said, “Alright, fire one every five minutes! Taozi, Taozi!” Shen Zhitao, who was further away at the main entrance, heard Wang Chao's call and asked, “What’s up?” Wang Chao replied, “I’m going to check the situation at the side door. Taozi looked through the crowd at Wang Chao. His face showed determination and decisiveness. Her eyes became somewhat dazed but quickly returned to normal as she loudly said to him, “Don’t worry; I’ll handle things here with Liu Jie. Just be careful…” “Got it,” Wang Chao said before he gracefully moved away.
At the Safe Zone's side door.
“Flares! Flares! Where did they go?” Da Qiang stood on an activity platform with his bare torso exposed, his solid muscles trembling with his roar. A flare was launched into the air; its light spread wide but faded quickly. Da Qiang seemed not to notice Wang Chao’s arrival as he focused intently on the distance. Following the light from the flare, Wang Chao saw that the nearest Zombies had already reached the side door of the Safe Zone.
Seeing this, Da Qiang immediately ordered, “Open fire! Quickly!”
Flames shot out like dragons; beneath them lay a dense carpet of Zombie corpses piled up nearly a meter high. In some places, the height of these corpses reached three meters—equivalent to a floor of a building. The sight was staggering; these bodies had literally formed a layer of height! Fortunately, it seemed that the Zombies had heard that command; aside from those already at the foot of the Safe Zone, most of the other Zombies had begun to retreat.
It was only then that Da Qiang noticed Wang Chao standing behind him. Upon seeing him, he broke into a goofy smile and said, “Brother Wang, when did you arrive?” Wang Chao patted his bicep and replied, “The Zombies are pulling back; we can take a short break now. But remember to fire a flare every five minutes—don’t let your guard down!”
Da Qiang nodded while grinning widely and scratching his belly as he said, “Got it, Brother Wang.”
"Alright, let's eat in order, one by one!" Wang Chao pointed to the women nearby and said.
"Listen to Brother Wang, Team One, go eat first! Remember, be quick! Don't delay, and those who need to use the restroom should hurry!" Da Qiang said. Hearing this, Wang Chao slapped his forehead; how could he have overlooked something so obvious that Da Qiang thought of it? It was only natural. However, Wang Chao didn't say much more and told Da Qiang, "Remember, if anything happens, make sure to notify me... just go to the front gate. I'm going to check on Tang Feng at the side entrance!"
