Wang Chao never expected that at the last moment, Wu Lu would make such a choice. Otherwise, with Wang Chao's strength, he would not have been kicked out by Wu Lu. As countless Zombies tore at him, Wu Lu looked at Wang Chao and managed to squeeze out the most beautiful smile of his life. He said, "Brother Wang, you are a good person..."
Wang Chao suddenly recalled the young man who had glared at him in anger due to a misunderstanding, the one who acted impulsively without considering the consequences. That person was none other than the Wu Lu standing before him. "Kid, you have decent strength. I'll arrange for you to be a Squad Leader; that shouldn't be a problem!" Wang Chao remembered what he had said when he appointed Wu Lu.
"Understood!" Wu Lu's promise was something he never forgot until his death.
"Hahaha, I'm not a coward! Did you see that, my dear? I'm not a coward!" As a farmer, he had always been bullied and appeared submissive. His wife called him a coward, and he believed it too. But today, he knew he was not a coward. "Kid, I'm coming!" With that, he gripped the doorframe tightly, allowing the Zombies to tear at him and blood to flow freely without loosening his grip.
He was not a coward; he was a true man.
"Although I may not dare to die alone, if so many people are with me, I can die in peace! This is my choice in this lifetime!" He spoke with a smile as tears streamed down his face. He was just a high school student who felt that his life's path had already been planned out for him. But this time, he made his own choice.
More and more people made their choices. They knew escape was hopeless; there were no cries of despair or complaints about fate. Instead, they held each other tightly and blocked the side door with all their might. Wang Chao did not know their names or see their faces; they were destined to be forgotten—nameless, faceless, even voiceless.
They were just grains of sand in a vast torrent, but at this moment, Wang Chao would never forget those who silently sacrificed themselves to protect others. Wang Chao was not a hero; he was just someone trying to survive in an unforgiving world. But was this world truly heartless? Humanity could be selfish and greedy; among them were many irredeemable villains deserving of execution a thousand times over.
Yet among humanity, there were those who could become heroes—like Wu Lu, like that farmer, like that high school student. They were the true heroes.
"Let's go!" When Wang Chao turned around, he noticed many people looking this way toward the side door; they had all witnessed that scene! Taking a deep breath to shake off the silent tears, he gripped the Panlong Blade tightly and shouted with all his might, "Charge! Let's fight our way out together and cross that lake; they won't catch up!"
The Zombies at the side door were pitifully few compared to those at the front door. Da Qiang had already led part of the Guards deep into the horde of Zombies; screams echoed as people fell and could no longer rise. Among nearly two thousand men in the Safe Zone, casualties approached a thousand—those injured by Mucus suffered minor wounds while losing limbs was not uncommon.
Even Wang Chao—the strongest man in the Safe Zone and Silver Upper Tier—would have met a gruesome end if it weren't for Wu Lu's intervention. In terms of strength, none of these Zombies could match Wang Chao individually. Even when facing thousands of ordinary Zombies or dozens of Zombie Dogs—or even ten Giant Zombies simultaneously—Wang Chao had the ability to fight back. But here, the sheer number of Zombies was overwhelming.
Hundreds of thousands of Zombies...
Suddenly, a loud crash came from behind Wang Chao. He turned to look, and despite the many people blocking the way, the relentless tide of Zombies had completely torn those individuals apart and burst through the door with such force that it knocked the side door down.
"Get into the lake, quickly! Zombies won’t enter the water!" Tang Feng's voice rang out abruptly. Having guarded this side door, he had witnessed firsthand that Zombies seemed to have an instinctive aversion to water. Upon hearing this, everyone hesitated no longer. If they tried to go around, their speed would never match that of the Zombie Dogs. The only option was to swim directly across the lake!
At that moment, no one cared whether they could swim or not; even if they couldn’t swim, they would wade through the water! Drowning was a hundred times better than dying in the jaws of a Zombie! The sound of splashes echoed as Wang Chao jumped into the lake. The pursuing Zombie Dogs halted their chase, but those at the front were knocked into the water by the Zombies coming from behind.
Underwater, the speed advantage of these Zombie Dogs vanished entirely, and they seemed to be quite fearful of water, flailing chaotically. Wang Chao drew his blade, and with a swift motion, the Panlong Blade cut through the water, creating an opening and cleaving several Zombie Dogs in two. Blood immediately floated to the surface. Wang Chao glanced back and noticed that black tendrils from his Panlong Blade were coiling up to its hilt.
"Could it really be due to absorbing blood?" Wang Chao wondered.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief as victory seemed within reach. Suddenly, it was as if rain began to fall on the surface of the water—no, it wasn’t rain; it was Mucus from Big-Mouth Zombies! Wang Chao felt a stinging sensation on his arm as a large patch of flesh was stripped away. He quickly plunged his hand into the water to dilute the mucus. However, what troubled him was that the Mucus rain was intensifying.
Turning his head, he saw countless Big-Mouth Zombies in the distance furiously spraying Mucus, seemingly covering this entire area without any sign of stopping.
"Submerge your heads in the water! Be careful!" With such a massive assault raining down like a storm, there was no chance to evade unless they submerged themselves completely; otherwise, they would soon be corroded by Mucus! Hearing this, everyone dove underwater. Above them, they could hear the crackling sounds of Mucus hitting the surface followed by hissing sounds as it burned.
The Mucus rain continued for two minutes without any sign of letting up! But humans are not fish; they cannot hold their breath indefinitely.
Many were already turning blue in the face; whether they stayed underwater and suffocated or surfaced only to be burned by Mucus was a grim choice!
Survival was hanging by a thread.
