Many people simply could not hold their breath, one by one surfacing. But as soon as they poked their heads above the water, they were hit by the descending Mucus, which instantly corroded their scalps. Their hair and flesh mixed with the lake water, creating a sticky, gruesome sight. This was not the worst part; even worse were those who opened their mouths to gasp for air, only to have the Mucus stick directly in their throats and esophagi.
They couldn't even scream in agony, thrashing about in the water and stirring up white splashes, silent yet tragic. The Mucus seemed to penetrate deep into their stomachs, and before long, numerous corpses began to float on the lake's surface. Some people, seeing this, disregarded the dead and surfaced from the water, using these floating bodies as shields against the Mucus.
The crowd continued to paddle toward the opposite shore of the lake when suddenly, the surface of the lake began to shake violently. A powerful vortex formed from below, bubbling up like boiling water.
"What’s happening?" Wang Chao shouted.
"I don’t know!" No one had any idea what was going on. Using the floating corpses as cover, Wang Chao looked into the distance and saw that even the tall buildings far away were shaking. It didn’t take long for everyone to realize what was happening—an earthquake! In recent years, Huaxia had developed rapidly; an earthquake of magnitude eight might not be enough to topple these tall structures.
However, as they looked at the buildings now, they saw them bouncing up and down. Many walls had already crumbled and were falling from high above, crashing onto the ground. From across the water's surface, Wang Chao could only hear a buzzing sound mixed with the splashes around him. Was it just a coincidence that they encountered an earthquake at this moment? Turning back, he saw that the ten-meter-high wall of the Safe Zone had completely collapsed; hastily constructed walls could hardly withstand such a violent quake!
With the wall down, a horde of Zombies surged out from behind it. However, many of them were knocked down by the tremors of the ground, creating chaos all around. In the water, swept up by the vortex, no one could tell which way was up or down. Wang Chao could only roll with the waves, occasionally opening his eyes to assess his surroundings.
Vaguely, Wang Chao realized that this strange earthquake was not a mere coincidence; it wasn’t a natural disaster at all. He could see something crawling up from beneath the ground in the distance—a green cylindrical object that seemed to be emerging from below.
This unknown entity moving underground was causing such intense surface activity. It felt as if an epicenter was right beside him; as that thing continued to break through the ground, the intensity of the tremors increased. Buildings kept collapsing, and many stones rolled into the lake. It was fortunate that everyone was moving slowly; had they been faster, they would have been crushed under falling debris!
The lake continued to churn violently as Wang Chao struggled to keep himself steady in the water. He looked again at that object emerging from deep within the earth; it was growing larger and larger. As it continued to surface, Wang Chao felt his heart turn colder than the lake waters in early spring because he saw that green cylindrical thing writhing out—it was an enormous Worm.
What he had seen earlier was merely its head, wide enough to match a large truck. Now that more of its body was appearing, Wang Chao found himself at a loss for words to describe this gigantic Worm. If that giant Zombie had already seemed like a colossal creature in everyone's eyes, then this Worm surpassed any definition of "large."
Suddenly, Wang Chao recalled his previous exploration of the Mass Grave. If anything could create such a massive hole in the ground, it had to be this creature without a doubt. At that time, however, it must not have fully emerged; hence everyone hadn’t felt such intense tremors. The Mass Grave contained only about a hundred thousand dead Zombies, but here there were easily several hundred thousand gathered—was this Worm here for hunting?
More than half an hour had passed, and the surroundings had turned into a wasteland. The Worm had emerged from beneath the ground, its surroundings completely collapsed. Wang Chao could only see its slimy body, but the length of the Worm remained unknown. However, judging by its width, one could infer its size. It was the first time Wang Chao had seen a Worm with teeth...
The green and plump Worm was covered in Mucus, which continuously dripped down its body, making the ground incredibly sticky. This Mucus was the same type that Wang Chao and Tang Feng had encountered before, distinctly different from the Mucus spewed by Zombies. Once this Mucus stuck to something, there was no way to remove it except by cutting away the flesh along with it; water would not wash it away.
Meanwhile, the intense earthquake finally subsided.
Despite its massive size, the Worm moved quickly. Beneath it were countless limbs, each as robust as an adult's arm. The Worm wriggled like a train that had just started moving, and in an instant, it reached the vicinity of the Zombies. It opened its mouth, resembling a giant water tank, and Mucus dripped everywhere. The Zombies didn’t even have time to lift their heads before being swallowed whole by the Worm.
At the same time, the Worm continued to spray Mucus. Those Zombies hit by the Mucus instantly turned into rotting corpses, their flesh and blood splattered everywhere.
"Run!" Wang Chao shouted in the water. "Hurry!"
If those Zombies could still be dealt with for a moment, there was no way to confront this Worm. Before anyone could approach, the Mucus would already corrode them completely. At that moment, the Zombies no longer cared about pursuing those heading for the Safe Zone; faced with such a colossal opponent, the Zombie Dogs charged forward immediately. However, before they could get close, they were already stained by the massive Worm's bodily fluids, transforming into Muscle Dogs with their skin entirely gone, appearing vividly red!
Even so, one of these dogs still rushed up to the Worm and sank its sharp teeth into its body. The Mucus oozing from the Worm exposed the dog’s skull, yet the Zombie Dog clung tightly to the Worm with its teeth.
