The sounds from behind echoed in everyone's ears, as if the world was being turned upside down. The thud of stones falling, the roars of Zombies, and the incessant squeaking of Worms writhing on the ground created a cacophony that assaulted Wang Chao's ears, mixed with the shouts of those around him, making his head throb painfully. He paddled through the water until he finally reached the opposite shore. Looking back, he saw that the Zombies were in complete disarray.
It was unclear whether the appearance of the Worm had caught the Zombie commander off guard or if it had already perished under the Worm's attack. Based on previous experiences and logic, Zombies were mutated monsters driven by their instinct to hunt. When they saw living humans, they would rush forward, but they would never come at them head-on while others flanked from the sides; that would indicate a level of intelligence.
This was no longer instinct; this was hunting!
However, today’s Zombies did not charge blindly upon seeing living humans. It was evident that they were under some form of control, including changing formations and feigning attacks before retreating. All of this could only mean that among these Zombies, there existed an intelligent variant capable of leading hundreds of thousands of them—an Advanced Zombie. But what exactly did such a Zombie look like? Through the transformation of their formation, Wang Chao could tell that this controlling Zombie lacked sufficient military strategy.
Otherwise, Wang Chao could think of a hundred ways to quickly breach the Safe Zone. For instance, waiting until nightfall for the Black Monster to transport Mucus Zombies to catch everyone off guard while the monsters invaded the Safe Zone, then having the Zombie Squad mobilize. Or they could circle around to the back mountain for a high-ground ambush. Yet these Zombies did not employ such tactics, which was one thing that relieved Wang Chao.
He couldn't believe that if someone commanding the Zombie Squad was a general skilled in warfare, then who in this world could stand against these Zombies? The thought sent chills down Wang Chao's spine. If these intelligent Zombies could evolve further, would there really come a day when they swept across the land? Shaking his head, he dared not think any further.
At that moment, those in the lake had begun to crawl ashore one after another. As soon as they reached land, they collapsed onto the ground, utterly exhausted. This fatigue was not just physical but also mental; the thrill of surviving a disaster surged within them as they watched the battle between Worms and Zombies across the way. Everyone felt as though they had been transported to another world.
Many were in tears. Since the siege began by the Zombies until now, out of over two thousand people in the Safe Zone, fewer than a thousand remained; half had perished at the hands of Zombies. In just over an hour since the Zombies breached the Safe Zone, nearly a thousand lives had been lost! The searchlights across from them still shone brightly, hanging over the remnants of broken walls like small suns illuminating several kilometers around the Safe Zone as if it were daytime.
“Tang Feng, lead everyone to retreat. If possible, circle around to the back mountain from the southeast…” A heavy weight lifted from Wang Chao's heart as he visibly relaxed. “Find them and settle them down… I’ll stay here and keep an eye on things.” As he spoke, his gaze remained fixed on the Zombies and Worms across from him. Tang Feng nodded in response and patted Wang Chao on the shoulder without saying a word.
Thus, this group of a thousand finally managed to escape from encirclement by the Zombies. However, Wang Chao could not guarantee how many among them would survive; nearly everyone was injured, with many severely wounded—some missing limbs—and without medical care to treat them, whether these individuals would make it through tonight was uncertain.
Others might be lucky enough to survive without infection from their wounds, but not everyone had such fortune. Most were at a low level of resilience and lacked recovery abilities like Wang Chao’s; death was merely a matter of time for them. Although Wang Chao recognized this truth, he found it hard to voice such grim thoughts aloud; sometimes reality was just that cruel and merciless.
Wang Chao cleared his mind of these thoughts and drove his Panlong Blade into the ground before him.
At this moment, the battle between the Zombies and the Worm had reached a fever pitch. Faced with such a massive Worm, the Zombies appeared almost like mere insects. Yet, the Zombies showed no fear; their confusion was chaotic but not driven by terror. The Zombies near the Worm sensed its enormous presence, each one standing resolutely like solitary warriors marching forward.
However, despite their numbers, the ordinary Zombies lacked any real offensive power. They were contaminated by the Worm's writhing Mucus, and their already sluggish movements became painfully slow, as if they were glued to the ground. Each step left a bloody imprint, and before they could reach the Worm, their feet were corroded away, leaving them collapsed in the Mucus, awaiting a fate of gradual decay.
In contrast, the Black Monsters and Zombie Dogs moved with remarkable speed. Wang Chao observed as countless Zombie Dogs and Black Monsters charged at the Worm. From a distance, it looked as if various spots of red and black had sprouted all over the green Worm's body. The skin of the green Worm bulged with small lumps—wounds inflicted by the Zombies biting into it.
As these wounds tore open on its surface, torrents of Mucus gushed out, flooding into the mouths and noses of the Zombies, forming swollen sacs. With each influx of Mucus, these sacs expanded until they reached a critical point, causing heads to explode like balloons. Wang Chao even felt an illusion that the Mucus could continue to spray indefinitely.
As more Zombies gathered around it, the Worm seemed to sense the pressure mounting and attempted to roll on the ground—a natural instinct. However, its massive size made even this simplest of actions nearly impossible to execute within a few minutes! At that moment, towering Zombies measuring seven or eight meters tall surged forward from behind.
Yet this roll only drove the heads embedded in its back deeper into its flesh. Instantly, pain caused the giant creature to curl up and roll frantically on the ground. Its limbs, thick as an adult's arm, writhed rapidly, resembling countless human arms sprouting from in front of the Worm—truly bizarre and grotesque.
The Giant Zombie also joined the fray.
