The madman had already charged towards Wang Chao, leaving him with no way to escape. Gritting his teeth, he kicked out, sending the lunatic crashing into several people nearby. However, more of those crazed individuals were rushing in. Wang Chao cursed under his breath and pushed through the crowd, running towards the stairs. The throng was so dense that he couldn't tell how many people had been knocked down the stairs.
At this moment, Wang Chao was reckless. He kept shoving aside those who were slower than him. After a struggle, he finally reached the second floor, only to see a group of people running towards him, followed closely by a horde of lunatics. Among them was Yang Mengying, who shouted, "That one behind is our company director! How did he end up like this?"
"Follow me! They are no longer normal humans!" Wang Chao said as he grabbed Yang Mengying and ran in the opposite direction. But everywhere he turned, there were more of those crazies. Wang Chao and the large group had no choice but to rush into an office. However, Yang Mengying, who was at the back, tripped and fell due to the speed of their escape just as Wang Chao entered the office.
Inside the office, Wang Chao saw Yang Mengying left outside and turned to rush back out. But before he could open the door, a swarm of people surged forward and shoved him aside. They locked the door from within while shouting, "You fool! Even if you want to die, we still want to live! If she runs slowly, that's her fate; don't drag everyone else down with you!"
Watching them lock the door, tears streamed down Wang Chao's face. He knew that Yang Mengying's chances of survival were slim. He set Yiyi aside and charged out fiercely. He kicked at the glass partition of the office and smashed it with a chair, desperate to break through. He couldn't just stand by and watch Yang Mengying die before his eyes. But his frantic actions only provoked a more violent retaliation from the others.
For every kick he delivered to the glass, they retaliated by kicking him five times. When he struck the glass with a chair, they responded by hitting him with chairs in return. Before long, Wang Chao was battered and bruised all over. Yet the physical pain paled in comparison to the anguish in his heart as he watched Yang Mengying being overwhelmed by that group of lunatics, who were tearing into her flesh. It felt as if they were gnawing at his own heart.
In an instant, Yang Mengying lay lifeless on the ground, bloodied and still beside the glass partition wall. Her eyes were wide open as if asking why no one inside helped her...
Tears were no longer enough to express Wang Chao's sorrow. He looked at those who stood by without helping—those who had previously coveted Yang Mengying's beauty—now unhesitatingly abandoning her life when faced with their own danger. Suddenly, Wang Chao felt an eerie familiarity with this situation; it seemed like something similar had happened in another parallel world.
But as he continued to think deeply about it, a splitting headache struck him as if something was trying to burrow out of his skull, making him afraid to delve further into his thoughts. Yiyi cautiously approached Wang Chao and knelt beside him, using her sleeve to wipe away the blood on his face while everyone else seemed oblivious to Yang Mengying's tragic death outside.
They said nothing and avoided looking at Wang Chao; each wore an expression of indifference. All he could hear was Yiyi's soft sobs and the howls of lunatics outside the glass partition.
The number of crazies outside continued to grow as they slammed against the glass without feeling pain. With their increasing numbers, it was clear that the partition wouldn't hold for much longer; everyone was sweating nervously as they realized there was nowhere left to escape—the wall was right behind them. If the glass shattered, they would all perish here. Wang Chao huddled in a corner, coldly observing this panicked crowd.
Suddenly, a crack appeared in the glass—a bloody fissure where Yang Mengying's blood had spilled earlier—one crack became two, then countless cracks spread like twisting snakes that sent chills down their spines! Then came a series of loud crashes as the glass partition shattered completely; those lunatics had already burst through into the room.
Madmen surged in from outside, and those inside wanted to escape, creating a chaotic crowd. In the far corner, Wang Chao swiftly picked up Yiyi, determined to charge forward. He unleashed the fastest speed of his life, and by the time he burst out, the madmen and other people had yet to react.
At that moment, a woman grabbed Wang Chao's leg.
"Help me! Please!" she cried. "I don't want to die here; I have a three-year-old at home!"
Wang Chao ignored her, instead stomping down on her hand. She yelped in pain and instinctively withdrew her hand. When she looked up again, Wang Chao had already run far away. Help you? Why didn’t you save Yang Mengying just now? Everyone here deserves to die, Wang Chao thought bitterly. In an instant, he reached the corner of the office building.
What Wang Chao didn’t expect was that there was another wave of madmen waiting around the corner. They were crouched on the ground, feasting on something. With enemies in front and behind him, Wang Chao couldn’t afford to think about anything else—he ran, sprinting as fast as he could. The only thought in his mind was to escape. It wasn’t until he dashed past the madmen that they finally reacted and began to chase after him.
Ahead lay the emergency exit; if he could reach it, there was a good chance of survival. Wang Chao’s eyes were fixed on the exit, nothing else mattered—ten meters, five meters, three meters, one meter—his hand touched the iron door of the passageway. But just then, a madman behind him lunged forward and grabbed Yiyi.
Wang Chao was moving too quickly; by the time Yiyi was snatched away, he had already entered the passageway. He turned back to look through the iron door’s window and saw Yiyi being held aloft by that madman. With a brutal tug, Yiyi's body was torn apart at the middle, her insides spilling onto the ground in a gruesome display of blood and horror.
“Yiyi!” Wang Chao screamed hoarsely.
He didn’t understand what had happened to this world or these people, nor did he comprehend why those he cared for most were dying before his eyes.
Behind him were countless madmen; ahead lay the passageway.
Wang Chao took one last look back and then ran into the passage without turning around.
