It seemed that there was a problem with the power system; this so-called safe passage was pitch black. Wang Chao could see nothing at all. He could only run forward, guided by instinct, but he had no idea how long he had been running. The passage seemed endless, with no stairs or corners in sight. It felt like a straight line with no end. Over an hour passed, and sweat poured down Wang Chao's face as his heart raced with increasing panic.
Suddenly, he spotted a faint light in the distance—weak and elusive, yet undeniably present. As he approached it, Wang Chao felt himself enveloped in the glow.
"Hey, hey, wake up." A familiar voice rang in his ears. Wang Chao groggily scratched his head and blinked awake, surveying his surroundings. Yes, this was his bed in the small apartment he rented. The voice belonged to Yang Mengying, the beautiful woman he shared the apartment with. As he looked at the blinding winter light streaming in, Wang Chao felt an odd sense of déjà vu. Yang Mengying had already rushed off to work while he got up to wash and get ready.
The doorbell rang, and Wang Chao knew it was his junior sister coming to pick up Yiyi.
After taking Yiyi outside, their destination for the day was the amusement park behind Yang Mengying's company. It would be fun for Yiyi, and he could also pick up Yang Mengying after work. Yiyi beamed as she sat on the carousel. Suddenly, a blood-soaked madman burst onto the scene, attacking anyone in sight. Chaos erupted around them as Wang Chao hurriedly grabbed Yiyi and fled. They ran into Yang Mengying at the company.
Just as he thought they could escape, a madman lunged directly at Yang Mengying. Before Wang Chao could react, she fell lifelessly to the ground. Overwhelmed with grief, tears soaked his clothes. At that moment, Yiyi was snatched away by another madman who lifted her into the air and tore her apart in an instant. In a daze of horror, Wang Chao spotted a door and dashed through it without thinking.
Inside was dark; Wang Chao couldn't find words to describe his sorrow—he just ran.
In the distance, a flickering light appeared.
"Hey, hey, wake up!" The familiar voice echoed again in his ears. Wang Chao rubbed his eyes and looked around sleepily. He felt like he had seen this scene somewhere before but couldn't recall where, which only made his head hurt more. He asked, "Are you going to work?" Yang Mengying nodded and hurried out.
"It seems like Yiyi is coming over?" Wang Chao thought to himself, unsure why he felt that way.
Sure enough, Yiyi was brought over by his little sister again. Taking Yiyi to the amusement park felt like a win-win situation; he planned to cook a big meal for Yang Mengying later that day. Watching Yiyi on the carousel made him feel an unsettling sense of familiarity; someone should be coming out from there soon. Suddenly, a bloodied figure charged out.
The chaos erupted once more as it attacked anyone in sight.
More and more crazed individuals rushed out, and Wang Chao felt a vague sense that he shouldn't have entered the company. So, he took Yiyi and tried to run outside. Along the way, he suddenly spotted Yang Mengying running towards them. Wang Chao quickly asked, "What are you doing here?" Yang Mengying, seeing him, couldn't help but feel delighted. She replied, "I was out on company business and just returned when I encountered this situation."
But just as they were talking, countless crazed individuals surged in from the side. Wang Chao grabbed Yang Mengying and held Yiyi tightly as they ran. However, there were simply too many of those crazed people. Yang Mengying stumbled and fell to the ground, captured by the crazed individuals who began to tear at her relentlessly. Wang Chao continued to run forward, but suddenly, Yiyi was snatched away from his arms. Yiyi was lifted up and instantly torn in half.
After turning a corner, Wang Chao discovered a door appearing before him.
Behind the door was complete darkness, with only a faint glow visible.
"Hey! It's time to get up." A familiar voice rang in his ears. Wang Chao groggily scratched his head and then looked around sleepily. Suddenly, he inexplicably said, "Yang Mengying, can you skip work today?" Yang Mengying looked at him with exasperation. She patted his head and replied, "You're not even running a fever. If I don't work, are you going to support me?"
With that, Yang Mengying rushed out of the room.
Wang Chao felt a sense of loss as he opened the door and watched Yang Mengying's figure disappear down the stairs. At that moment, his junior sister from upstairs brought Yiyi back. Wang Chao said to Yiyi, "How about we skip the amusement park today?" Yiyi obediently nodded, seeming to think that as long as she was with Wang Chao, it didn't matter where they went.
Wang Chao took Yiyi for a stroll downstairs. Many people in the neighborhood were out walking when suddenly a bloodied person charged out, biting anyone in sight. Panic erupted among the crowd. Wang Chao ran towards the exit of the neighborhood while holding Yiyi but then spotted Yang Mengying again. He asked, "Aren't you supposed to be at work? Why are you still here?"
Yang Mengying looked at him anxiously and said, "I'm waiting for the bus. I don't know what's going on; it seems like it's running late. The bus has always come around this time for months now—what's happening this time?" Just as she spoke, a bus came racing towards them, seemingly out of control, flipping over as it crashed. From inside poured out countless crazed individuals.
In an instant of distraction, Yang Mengying was grabbed by the crazed people who pulled her down to the ground. They tore at her mercilessly; she no longer had a single intact piece of flesh left. Seeing this broke Wang Chao's heart into pieces; tears streamed down his face as he clutched Yiyi and tried to escape. But out of nowhere, a crazed individual lunged at him and snatched Yiyi away from his arms.
Wang Chao turned to look but only saw Yiyi being held high in the air. With one forceful pull from the crazed individual, Yiyi was torn apart, her insides spilling out. Wang Chao was overwhelmed with grief; he wanted to cry but found that no tears would come out. He ran frantically into the distance where crazed individuals surrounded him except for one shop whose door remained closed.
Wang Chao hurried over and opened the door only to find complete darkness inside with only a distant flicker of light visible ahead.
"Hey, hey, it's time to get up!" The familiar voice rang in his ears again, and Wang Chao suddenly opened his eyes, as if something had imprisoned his mind.
"I'm going to work!" Yang Mengying said.
Wang Chao touched his face, not knowing why it was already covered in tears.
