After a few rounds of drinks, Wang Chao noticed that everyone was quite tipsy, swaying as they talked. It turned out that they had just buried all the Zombie corpses from outside in a large pit, finishing the task only yesterday. Today was meant to be a day off for everyone. To everyone's surprise, the usually serious Tang Feng had also gotten a bit carried away with the drinks and insisted on performing a knife dance, which made Yiyi and Xiao Wei laugh uncontrollably.
Shen Zhitao and Wu Wan'er could hold their liquor well; even Da Qiang, who was known for his heavy drinking in the countryside, couldn't keep up with them. Perhaps it was a trait common among the people of the Seven Great Families. Meanwhile, Shen Zhiying was having a great time chatting with Little Grudge. It seemed that their cold exteriors drew them together. Wang Chao shook his head and stood up to step outside.
In the dark, hazy night, after a few drinks, Wang Chao felt much lighter. He decided to temporarily set aside all worries—be it about Huangfu Yan's subordinates or the looming Zombie crisis, or even thoughts of death. He simply gazed up at the starry sky. Strangely enough, aside from his childhood, he had never taken the time to look at the stars above him.
So bright.
"What are you thinking about?" Yang Mengying asked as she patted him on the back. Turning around, he saw her blushing slightly, looking like a ripe apple—beautiful and captivating. Wang Chao smiled and took her hand, saying, "I'm going to take you to a special place! A place you don't know about."
Confused, Yang Mengying asked, "Outside? Isn't that a bit dangerous?"
"No, it's not outside; it's inside the Safe Zone," Wang Chao replied.
"Inside the Safe Zone?" This puzzled her even more. "When we were renovating the Safe Zone, we explored every corner. Is there still somewhere in there that I don't know about?"
Without answering her question, Wang Chao pulled her hand and ran down the dimly lit street. After their previous experience, most of the electricity in the Safe Zone had been allocated to factories and powerful searchlights on the walls. The streetlights along the paths were low wattage and dim; however, this setup was still far better than many other places without power, water, or food. The Jing City Safe Zone, compared to the capital city, was certainly not lacking.
But right now, Wang Chao wasn't concerned about those issues; he ignored greetings from residents of the Safe Zone, including some Patrolman, as they ran for half an hour before arriving at their destination. If it weren't for Yang Mengying having also reached silver level by now, she would have been panting heavily.
"This is just a villa area," she remarked.
Since this villa area had become government property under Wang Chao, there were quite a few guards around. However, no one was home at the moment; only the lights outside two villas were on while everything inside remained dark. Approaching one of the soldiers, Wang Chao muttered something that left Yang Mengying feeling quite curious.
"Let's go!" Wang Chao said, "Follow me up."
Using the spiral staircase inside, Wang Chao led Yang Mengying to the top floor of the villa. "Look up!" Wang Chao instructed. Yang Mengying tilted her head back and saw nothing but darkness, with only a few faintly twinkling stars visible. Wang Chao pulled Yang Mengying down to lie on the slanted roof of the villa, which was impressively tall, reaching over ten meters high.
"What is this?" Yang Mengying asked curiously.
At that moment, Wang Chao let out a loud whistle. Suddenly, all the lights outside the villa went out. Since the villa area was far from other places, the darkness enveloped them completely; it was so dark that one couldn't see their own hand in front of their face. Yang Mengying gasped in surprise and then said, "This is the most beautiful sky I've ever seen in my life."
Wang Chao held Yang Mengying's hand as they lay on the rooftop at just the right angle to gaze at the starry sky. The view before them was vastly different from what it had been before the lights went out. The endless deep blue night sky was filled with stars of various sizes, twinkling in and out, some near and some far away, resembling small stones floating in a vast ocean, bringing an unparalleled sense of tranquility and freedom.
"When I was little, I often lay like this to watch the stars. It's quite nice, isn't it?" Wang Chao said softly.
Yang Mengying looked at the myriad of stars above. Although one could see stars elsewhere by simply looking up, none compared to how many there were here—how bright and profound they appeared.
Turning her face slightly, Yang Mengying gazed at Wang Chao. There was an indescribable allure about him; he might not be conventionally handsome, but he had a charm that drew people in. Especially in his eyes, which seemed to hold endless secrets that made one unable to look away. If it weren't for this quality, why would Wu Wan'er and Shen Zhitao also be attracted to this carefree Wang Chao?
Wang Chao might not realize it, but as a woman, Yang Mengying felt this clearly.
"I want to ask you a question," Yang Mengying said as she looked at Wang Chao's profile.
"What question?" Wang Chao replied.
Yang Mengying paused for a moment before speaking up again: "Why do you like me? Wu Wan'er is gentle and virtuous; she understands how to care for others deeply. Whatever she does is always organized and thoughtful—many people wish for a daughter-in-law like her. And then there's Shen Zhitao; she's clever and quick-witted. Whatever task you give her, she handles it flawlessly without any mistakes. Who wouldn't like such an intelligent and spirited woman?"
Wang Chao had not yet spoken when Yang Mengying continued, "But if you look at me, I can't do anything. I'm not as gentle as Wu Wan'er, nor as smart as Shen Zhitao. I can't help you fight enemies, and I have no medical skills. Being by your side, I can only burden you; I can't be of any assistance. Xiao Wei has a clever mind, and Yiyi even has mutated abilities."
"And I truly can't do anything," Yang Mengying said, a hint of sadness in her voice.
"Then why do you like someone like me?" Yang Mengying looked at Wang Chao earnestly.
Hearing her words, Wang Chao sat up and pondered for a moment. "You know, in my life, I've only been in love twice, including with you. I don't know why I like you, just like I don't know why I liked Liu Xiaoxiao. But feelings are inherently irrational. I love you not because you are virtuous or smart."
"It's simply because you are you."
