The alarm suddenly blared, and Gao Rui looked up at the dense array of instruments in front of him, noticing a red light flashing incessantly. "What the hell? How could a monster reach this area? Has it evolved again? That can't be possible," he muttered to himself as he picked up a stack of documents and began to examine them closely.
"Based on the current DNA arrangement patterns, it seems I've only altered its appearance and structural strength. Could intelligence also be affected? Did I accidentally discover a significant mutation in biology? They can't even open the iron door, let alone the air valve. Did they accidentally trigger something?" With that thought, Gao Rui pulled out a device resembling a remote control from the stack of papers.
He pushed off with his feet, causing his swivel chair to slide back smoothly. With a graceful turn, he pressed a button on the remote. Behind him was a large array of monitors made up of dozens of screens. The button he pressed adjusted the resolution, and at that moment, the situation inside the glass corridor was clearly displayed on the massive screen.
Gao Rui observed a person and a wolf in the glass corridor and said in confusion, "I've never seen that wolf before; it definitely isn't one of my creations. And why is there a person lying next to it? Who could that be?" As he manipulated the joystick on the remote, the image on the screen zoomed in closer and clearer until it froze on Wang Chao's eyes.
"Damn!" Gao Rui exclaimed as he saw Wang Chao's face. "It's actually at Golden Intermediate level! This is going to be interesting!"
In a daze, Wang Chao felt as if he heard someone speaking but couldn't open his eyes. It was as if he were trapped in a nightmare, his limbs felt weak, and although his mind was active, he couldn't respond physically. It felt like his body wasn't his own, and he couldn't muster the strength to speak. Am I... a vegetable now?
At that moment, Wang Chao had no idea that he was strapped to a cold iron bed, his limbs bound tightly. Various instruments were attached to him—some monitored his bodily conditions while others continuously injected unknown liquids into him. Some devices were even drawing blood from him.
Little Wolf was locked in a cage nearby, still asleep and unaware of what was happening.
Meanwhile, Gao Rui wore an expression of excitement as if he had discovered some of the world's greatest treasures. He muttered to himself, "Damn! Can this even be considered human? The hardness of its skeletal structure rivals those monsters I've created; its blood vitality is a hundred times that of an ordinary person. Could it be true that immortals exist in this world? If I enhance the vitality of its blood cells..."
As Gao Rui rambled on, he continued fiddling with one of the instruments, his eyes gleaming with obsession as if he wouldn't rest until he uncovered every detail. Poor Wang Chao remained oblivious to what was happening; all he felt was an overwhelming heat coursing through him as if his veins were about to burst. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't regain control over his own body.
Days passed—how many exactly was unclear—as various unknown liquids were continuously injected into Wang Chao's body. Little Wolf had long since awakened and was howling incessantly nearby, but Gao Rui seemed deaf to its cries, focused solely on his research involving Wang Chao.
Finally, Gao Rui shouted triumphantly, "It's done!"
At that moment, Wang Chao suddenly regained his freedom. After countless days of a gradually clearing consciousness, his body had remained beyond his control. This feeling of being like a living corpse was unbearable for him. Now that he had finally gained control, he exerted all his strength and broke the iron chains binding his limbs, standing up immediately.
He saw Little Wolf locked in a nearby cage, howling incessantly. In front of him stood a young man, probably around twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old. The man looked as if he hadn't bathed in three hundred years; his hair was unkempt, and his clothes were tattered, with even his shorts hanging out. He looked like a complete beggar. Glancing at himself, Wang Chao realized he was completely naked. It was incredibly awkward for two grown men to meet like this.
Wang Chao clenched his fist, ready to punch the man in front of him.
But before he could act, the man scratched his messy hair and said, "Brother, I've completed your transformation. Your current strength is at the Platinum Level. However, this is all internal—muscles, bones, cells—so it hasn't reflected in your genes yet. That's why your pupils are still at Golden Intermediate. Don't say I didn't give you a heads-up!"
"What? I've been transformed?" Wang Chao was shocked. He reached out to examine himself and looked closely at his body. There seemed to be no significant difference from before, but upon closer inspection, he could indeed feel a surge of power within him—not from mutated genes but integrated into his flesh and blood.
"Stop looking!" Gao Rui said. "If I didn't have this ability, I wouldn't dare call myself a biologist. You have no wounds—well, that's not entirely true; you do have one on your back!" Gao Rui smiled mysteriously, revealing a mouthful of yellow teeth that made him look extremely sleazy. Wang Chao touched his back and found the wound from when he had been injured by the monster; it didn't hurt anymore, so he ignored it.
He suppressed his anger and said, "Who gave you permission to transform me? Damn it, am I even human anymore? What if there are side effects? You'll pay for it." Despite saying this, Wang Chao didn't make a move against him; after all, he felt the increase in his strength. However, being transformed by someone else still made him uncomfortable—especially by this beggar-like figure in front of him.
"Don't worry; there are no side effects. Your strength has increased, and I've also collected data on the first human experiment—it's a win-win situation! Did you see the monsters outside when you came in? I created those!" Gao Rui said nonchalantly.
"What? The first?" Wang Chao exclaimed. "You think you can just know there are no side effects from the first time? You're going to get me killed!"
"Relax! With me here, you won't die. By the way, what are you doing here?"
