The car stopped in front of a building, and the three people inside got out. Wang Chao was underneath the vehicle, only able to see their legs. A few guards were stationed at the entrance, and while they were engaged in conversation with some soldiers, Wang Chao hurriedly crawled out from under the car and hid in the shadows. He looked around but saw no other patrols; however, the guards outside were already quite vigilant. If it weren't for this coincidence, it would have been difficult for Wang Chao to get in.
The three had already entered the building, while Wang Chao circled to the side. Using his Bone Knife, he carefully cut open a section of glass and climbed inside. The footsteps of the three echoed clearly in the silent corridor as Wang Chao stealthily followed behind them. They walked straight down a corridor, and as Wang Chao kept close, he noticed about a dozen people watching from either side of the hallway. Huangfu Ling and the others entered the room at the front.
Wang Chao cursed under his breath; that old fox Huangfu Yan was indeed cautious. With such heavy security, he still refused to let his guard down. Using his Bone Knife, Wang Chao clung to the ceiling like a gecko and slowly approached the last door. Thanks to the cover of night, he could hear intermittent sounds coming from inside—though not very loud, they were clear enough.
"Light that candle too and spread out the map!" The aged voice was undoubtedly Huangfu Yan's.
Then Wang Chao heard a rustling sound; it seemed that those inside were unfolding the map. After that, he caught more of Huangfu Yan's words: "The Huangfu Army has a total of twenty-two thousand three hundred men, among which you three command nine thousand. Huangfu Ling, tomorrow morning you will lead your troops along this line; Huangfu Nan and Huangfu Cheng, you two will advance along these two lines! Depart in the afternoon."
"Damn it!" Wang Chao cursed inwardly. "What line? Which line? He doesn't specify where we're supposed to go. It looks like I need to get that map; otherwise, this is pointless."
"You are all members of the Huangfu Family, having grown up in military camps. I believe you can conquer any challenges posed by those incompetent fools in the capital! Remember, once you reach your designated location, act according to our pre-planned schedule."
"Li Xian," Huangfu Yan continued, "the supplies for the army depend on you. You must ensure safety at the rear to prevent any attacks. Apart from Shangguan, all other elite troops will be under your command; you must guarantee security at the back."
"Do you understand?"
"Understood!"
Huangfu Yan added, "Luneng, you stay here and continue to oversee the Safe Zone. Your task is crucial; it’s the last line of defense. Remember, if they make a desperate move and launch a large-scale attack on Ganzhou, use artillery to blast open that barbed wire and release the Zombie Horde. As long as we win this battle, we can gradually eliminate these Zombies here."
"Understood!" Luneng replied.
"Of the remaining seven thousand, I will personally command them. It feels like it was last century when we fought this kind of ancient war. Who would have thought that a century later, we would return to such tactics, without high technology, without planes or tanks? Haha, I hope I can live another seventy years to see what this world will become!"
"Old Zhang, who has been nurturing himself and practicing breathing techniques since he was young, only lived a little over one hundred and twenty years. You think you can live to one hundred and forty? Do you think this is some kind of immortality?" Wang Chao felt a surge of frustration from behind the wooden door. Although he still didn't know the route of the advance, he was already aware of the timing.
Then, the wooden door swung open, and the crowd inside rushed out, led by Huangfu Yan, with others following behind. Wang Chao counted; everyone inside had exited without exception, and those guards also followed Huangfu Yan out. Seeing this, Wang Chao's heart leaped with joy; it seemed that the maps were still in this room.
Truly, no matter how clever the schemes are, there will always be a flaw!
At that moment, Huangfu Yan could not have imagined that a figure dressed in black was lurking on the ceiling. Wang Chao jumped down silently, manifesting bone spikes to unlock the door before slipping inside. It was still pitch dark within; he dared not turn on a flashlight or light a candle for fear that even the slightest glimmer would expose his position.
Using the faint starlight from outside, Wang Chao began to feel around in the darkness. There were indeed many documents and maps on the table. He carefully examined each one; they were mostly detailed documents with several maps marked with various colored lines indicating routes. It appeared these were hastily drawn by Huangfu Yan while planning.
After flipping through to the last page, Wang Chao finally saw the finalized route map. It marked several points and routes; upon a cursory glance, he was taken aback. Without this map, he would never have deduced this information himself. However, after seeing it, he realized these locations were all crucial battlegrounds—whoever secured these points first would make it nearly impossible for the enemy to advance.
Next came the planned marching routes attacking the imperial capital from different directions. Yet on this map, there were only routes for Huangfu Ling, Huangfu Nan, Huangfu Cheng, and even Luneng's movements; not a single line indicated Huangfu Yan's advance route. It seemed that Huangfu Yan had his marching plan firmly in mind. Nevertheless, having this map was still an enormous gain.
At least they could pre-plan actions for over eleven thousand troops. Moreover, with logistical support cut off from Huangfu Army's supplies, victory would be within reach. Wang Chao meticulously memorized these routes and locations before carefully placing the map back exactly as it had been. He couldn't afford to be careless about any detail; even one small mistake could lead to total disaster.
Just as Wang Chao turned to leave, a gun was pressed against the back of his head.
Cold sweat instantly soaked his back; this person had been inside all along without him noticing. Wang Chao had always wondered why that old fox Huangfu Yan would let his guard down at such a time—now he realized someone had been watching from within. This person must be at a diamond level of skill; otherwise, how could he have detected nothing at all?
"Did you remember everything?" The person behind him spoke up.
Wang Chao understood that with his current strength, it was impossible to escape from this person. In order to buy some time, he could only nod in agreement.
"That's good!" the man said. "You can go now!"
Wang Chao was taken aback, unsure of what this person meant. He asked, "Who are you?"
But there was no response behind him.
