"Understood!" Shen Zhitao nodded, then without any hesitation, he exited the inn. Wang Chao and Wang Xiaochuan acted like two clowns, constantly taunting the monster. Whenever it got too close to Wang Chao, Wang Xiaochuan would bang on the walls and shout loudly to draw the creature's attention. Fortunately, although the monster was nearly impervious to bullets, its intelligence was lacking. After several rounds of this, it was completely bewildered by their antics.
Meanwhile, Wang Chao kept firing at the monster. With each bullet that struck, he noticed the creature growing larger, as if it were a famished person gorging themselves until their belly bulged. This had to be the Gluttonous Beast! However, this one was even more formidable; it seemed to have mouths all over its body instead of just one.
Eventually, Wang Chao hesitated to shoot again. He realized that if he continued firing, the monster would soon grow to over two meters in length and width, filling the entire corridor. If that happened, both he and Wang Xiaochuan would be in an even worse predicament. Just then, he heard commotion outside the inn and caught a glimpse of Shen Zhitao approaching with a torch!
"Wang Xiaochuan!" Wang Chao shouted. "Get out of the way!"
At that moment, Wang Xiaochuan was being chased frantically by the monster. Upon hearing Wang Chao's warning, he turned around just as the creature spewed forth a mass of black substance. In that instant, it seemed impossible for him to evade it. Wang Chao threw another dagger, but it was absorbed by the monster's body.
As the black mass was about to hit Wang Xiaochuan, he suddenly sidestepped, leaning away just in time. The black substance grazed his clothing and flew past him. At that moment, he pushed off from the wall and propelled himself backward in the opposite direction. Wang Chao's eyes lit up as he shouted, "Throw the torch!"
Without hesitation, Shen Zhitao followed Wang Chao's command and hurled the torch into the air. As it soared above them, Wang Xiaochuan positioned himself against the wall and took three quick steps sideways before leaping over both the monster and the flying torch. Wang Chao reached out to steady him just as the torch struck the creature.
The torch integrated into the monster's body without igniting it as Wang Chao had imagined; instead of bursting into flames, this greasy beast showed no signs of change at all, leaving everyone stunned. "What on earth! Can’t this thing be killed?" Wang Chao exclaimed. Just as he finished speaking, he noticed something alarming—the monster was growing larger!
For no apparent reason, it continued to expand without stopping. The creature filled the corridor entirely and showed no signs of slowing down. Suddenly, a thought struck Wang Chao: "Could it be that as the torch burns inside it, the heat is causing it to swell?"
"That might be it!" Shen Zhitao replied.
Wang Chao frowned and said, "This building will eventually collapse under this monster's weight. At this rate, everything around us could be absorbed into its body at any moment. We need to retreat!" As he spoke, he led Shen Zhitao and Wang Xiaochuan outside. Once they were out of the inn, Wang Chao quickly ordered, "All units listen up! Point your vehicles toward the inn and turn on your headlights! Everyone else move back at least a hundred meters and prepare your weapons!"
Upon hearing Wang Chao's orders, everyone sprang into action. Before long, all vehicles were positioned facing the inn with their headlights blazing brightly against its walls. The light reflected back so intensely that it was almost blinding. Meanwhile, others formed ranks—some crouching and some standing—each holding their weapons aimed at the inn's direction.
At that moment, the hotel began to collapse, and a dark shadow emerged from within. The falling stones did not hit the ground; instead, they were absorbed by the shadow, creating an eerie scene for everyone watching. As the creature absorbed the stones, its body grew larger, and with each increase in size, it further crushed the walls of the hotel.
This created a vicious cycle: the monster kept growing larger while the four-story hotel continued to collapse. It seemed that the creature could expand to the height of the four-story building. In no time, most of its body was exposed. Seeing this, Wang Chao immediately shouted, "Aim for that monster and fire!"
With Wang Chao's command, the soldiers opened fire. Thousands of troops unleashed a barrage of bullets numbering in the tens of thousands, striking the creature. As it was hit by countless bullets, its body continued to swell until it completely crushed the four-story hotel, which became part of its form. The monster now appeared to be over ten meters long and wide!
Yet, it seemed that the creature was still expanding endlessly and was moving toward Wang Chao. With each step it took, it absorbed more stones from the ground, growing by a meter with every movement. The sight of this massive creature instilled fear in the soldiers; however, without an order to retreat from Wang Chao, they dared not back away. Wang Chao recognized their anxiety and stood at the forefront.
"Fire! Shoot indiscriminately! Just hit that monster! Don’t worry; if it comes for us, it will have to kill me first!" Wang Chao shouted loudly.
Seeing their commander standing bravely at the front gave everyone a sense of reassurance as they continued firing. The bullets fired must have exceeded one hundred thousand, yet there was still little effect on the creature. Wang Chao remained steadfastly positioned just four or five meters ahead of his troops without any movement or attempt to dodge. Just as the monster was about to reach him, there was a loud explosion.
"Cease fire!" Wang Chao finally spoke.
Everyone was bewildered by what had just happened and felt a lingering fear. Wang Chao then explained, "Every creature has its limits. Just like this monster—if it could truly grow infinitely larger, it would have already dominated Earth instead of being confined to this small area! I don’t know why we released it earlier; we triggered its ability."
"It is impervious to blades and bullets, seemingly absorbing everything like a Gluttonous Beast. Ultimately, it couldn’t withstand such immense energy and burst like a glutton who has overeaten!" Wang Chao concluded. "Now, let’s settle down for some rest!"
