In the Sub-base, a towering structure loomed eight hundred meters above the ground, standing resolutely against the wind. This was the highest defense watchtower of the Sub-base, serving as part of the defense system, a helipad, and a signal tower.
However, nowadays, only one of these functions remained: it served as a parking spot for the Battle Machine and had become a great vantage point for Lin Yuan to enjoy the scenery. Of course, this came at a cost; maintaining this eight-hundred-meter-high defense watchtower required a constant consumption of Standard Energy units, making it quite an expense.
On ordinary days, Lin Yuan would be reluctant to spend energy in such a manner. But now, he needed a place to think quietly, or perhaps he had found himself caught in a state of confusion and indecision.
Even his favorite activities—mechanical repairs and assembly—could not capture his interest, including fixing his damaged Mechanical Legs and Mechanical Arms.
This kind of repair and assembly was not beyond Lin Yuan's capabilities. However, for an entire month, he had done nothing at all. Even the Wreckage of the Fighter Jet he had acquired from Mechanical City seemed to have slipped his mind.
What left Lin Yuan perplexed was not the shame of the Gatekeeper nor the guilt from killing that Female Mutant. It wasn't even the shock of discovering the existence of Elite Warriors that made him feel insecure.
What troubled him was how he should develop next.
He had asked the Gatekeeper about what Mechanical Life was like in Mechanical City. This question left the Gatekeeper bewildered and confused for quite some time. Although that guy was despicable and annoying, he had said something that made Lin Yuan ponder deeply.
That was: when did Mechanical Life need to adhere to a fixed form? They were not Carbon-Based Life or Silicon-based Life, which were generally fixed in appearance from birth—men were men, women were women, with one nose and two eyes.
The essence of Mechanical Life was combat as its primary element; each Mechanical Life was unique. They would modify their Mechanical Bodies based on their combat habits. The existence of Modification Points served this purpose and was also what Mechanical Life took pride in.
Thus, Lin Yuan began to seriously contemplate the future direction of his Mechanical Body's growth. Without a fixed model or standard limitations, everything could be modified based on his own combat needs.
However, this seemingly free modification process was also one of the most challenging aspects to navigate. Unlike humans who were born with two legs and had no choice but to continuously enhance their capabilities for greater effectiveness over time, Mechanical Life faced different challenges.
If a Mechanical Life could not determine the best modification plan and instead kept experimenting aimlessly, the consequences could be dire. It would mean that this Mechanical Life was merely a failure.
Ultimately, this was still a matter of combat instinct.
But what kind of combat instinct did Lin Yuan need? Ranged Attack? It seemed that his greatest reliance at the moment was indeed Ranged Attack. He had even devoted himself to modifying it, and it appeared that within the Mechanical City, there was a profession called Ranged Attacker among the Elite Warriors.
However, Lin Yuan lacked confidence. He subconsciously felt that being competent as a Ranged Attacker among the Elite Warriors required an unimaginable level of skill, far beyond simply locking on and aiming.
Moreover, Lin Yuan wasn't particularly fond of Ranged Attack. After all, he was alone, without teammates to provide cover. What would happen if he fully committed to Ranged Attack and got ambushed? What if the enemy closed in on him? Just like before at Fortress Base; if that Mutant Hunter had companions, it would have been him who got taken down.
Combat instinct! Combat instinct!
These four words had been repeated in Lin Yuan's mind thousands of times. He wanted to find the combat instinct that suited him best, but such a thing couldn't be solved through Intellect calculations; it leaned more towards a moment of inspiration. Unfortunately, he wasn't particularly talented in combat, and his past identity as a human didn't seem to offer any enlightenment.
So now he was nearly driven mad by this torment.
"Alright, I give up. No more lofty aspirations; I won't think about the so-called Elite Warrior nonsense. I'll start from the basics." With a bitter smile in his heart, Lin Yuan wisely interrupted this frustrating train of thought, fearing he might end up with a mental breakdown.
Clearing all thoughts of Elite Warriors from his mind, Lin Yuan began to rethink his own combat habits. First, he extracted all his combat memories from Intellect, then selected all the melee attack segments. Finally, he locked onto five basic movements—these were the five fundamental combat techniques he could currently master.
The first was the Knee Strike Skill. This was the only recognized Combat Skill within his attributes and worked quite well; if timed correctly, it could deal significant damage to an opponent.
The second was Thrust, utilizing the Alloy Spike for thrusting attacks.
The third involved cutting attacks with the Alloy Spike, which could be combined with Thrust.
The fourth was Waist Rotation—a frequently used movement technique that not only allowed for a quick two-stage jump but also enabled more agile attacks against opponents, leading to various offensive strategies.
The last one is the Jumping Skill. This is not a Combat Skill, but rather a normal means of movement. Of course, it will provide a significant boost during battles.
What Lin Yuan needs to consider now is to select one or a set of these five movements to focus on. In other words, his future growth of the Mechanical Body will use this set of movements as a template for transformation. Once chosen, it will be difficult to make changes; otherwise, he would have to face the terrifying consequences of dispersing his abilities.
Although these are five very simple movements, Lin Yuan does not dare to be careless at all. He analyzes seriously which movement can maintain the same conditions as the others and how it will grow in the future.
After nearly collapsing from research and Cognitive Simulation, Lin Yuan first eliminated the Knee Strike Skill. This skill is based on human attack methods, and he cannot envision how this skill might evolve in the future. Moreover, this skill requires something quite simple: brute strength. A stronger force and a tougher Mechanical Body can achieve it. While it may be powerful, it lacks deeper developmental potential.
Next were the Thrust and Cutting Action. These two movements are also quite simple, but reaching a high level of mastery is challenging. Additionally, such movements seem more suited for agile attack patterns, so Lin Yuan decided to abandon them.
Then there’s Waist Rotation. Undoubtedly the simplest option, but at this moment, Lin Yuan cannot imagine a better enhancement plan for it.
So, what remains is the Jumping Skill.
This is a comprehensive movement that allows for instant acceleration and evasion, as well as launching attacks. In fact, other attack movements can be executed in conjunction with the Jumping Skill. Overall, it truly seems to be the most suitable for long-term development. Once this movement pattern is established, Lin Yuan will not be able to change it again—such as transforming into spider-like forms, wheel types, winged types, or claw types.
Of course, he could also explore creating a composite type, but that would undoubtedly be much more complex and is not something Lin Yuan can modify at this time.
