The sunset blazed like fire, casting the most brilliant shadows of the day upon Lin Yuan's Mechanical Body, creating a long, elongated reflection.
There was a hint of desolation and an inexplicable sadness.
Lin Yuan moved at a leisurely pace, assembling a few gadgets for himself. Given that his Energy Engine was so powerful now, he no longer had to worry much about weight limits. Based on practical tests, as long as the load did not exceed three hundred kilograms, he could maintain optimal speed and agility in his attacks. Of course, this would require a greater Energy Output.
But what did that matter? He was not lacking in energy at the moment. He had purchased zero F-Class Standard Energy Blocks in one go, which amounted to 0 units of Standard Energy. Such an abundance of energy was enough for Mouse One to fly from Earth to Mars.
However, Lin Yuan had no intention of heading to Mars. Despite Mars, Venus, Saturn, Mercury, and all other bodies within the Solar System falling under the operational range of the s-5 Sub-base, it seemed like a tedious endeavor before he had conquered the entire Earth.
Moreover, Lin Yuan felt that he was likely facing an insidious plot that he could hardly detect. The reason was simple: after querying the total files of the s-5 Sub-base, he discovered something that made him very alert. In the records of the three previous Executives of the Sub-base, all three unfortunate souls had gone bankrupt—one exiled and the other two murdered. Specifically, they died at the hands of Mutants; at least, that was how it was described in the files.
Additionally, Lin Yuan had an unexpected discovery that led him to have significant doubts about the Gatekeeper.
The situation unfolded as follows: after reviewing the total files of the s-5 Sub-base, he found his own name within those records. Of course, this name was not Lin Yuan but Citizen d00981547.
This numerical designation belonged to the unfortunate soul whose identity Lin Yuan had assumed—the e1-level Mechanical Warrior Wreckage he had seen at Warehouse Base.
However, there wasn't much information regarding Citizen d00981547 in the file. Curiosity piqued, Lin Yuan began searching for this individual's personal information. Unfortunately, it was quite dismal; according to records, he was a captain of an f1-level Mercenary Group—ordinary and unremarkable. Most valuable items in his remote bank vault were missing, save for a bizarre piece of Alloy Steel twisted like a pretzel, which bore a combination of eighty-nine digits and letters that seemed meaningless.
Out of curiosity, Lin Yuan recorded this string of numbers and letters. To his surprise, when this sequence entered his Intellect, it acted like a key that unlocked a very obscure and strange fleeting image. The recording method was familiar to Lin Yuan—it was characteristic of Mechanical Warriors' Auditory Radar.
At the beginning of this image was intense gunfire; although both audio quality and visuals were quite blurry, Lin Yuan could still discern the whistling sound of Firestone High-Explosive Armor-Piercing Rounds. He also saw aircraft flying by and witnessed skyscrapers collapsing in an instant.
It all felt familiar. Then came four distinctly powerful Mechanical Warriors—all e1 level—some specializing in ranged combat while others excelled in close quarters. One particularly large warrior wielded two massive shields and appeared to be a defensive specialist among them.
They were besieged, surrounded by an unknown number of Mutants from all directions. One Mechanical Warrior was desperately calling for support from the Sub-base, but it was clear that help was not coming. Suddenly, five Elite Warriors emerged from among the Mutants, terrifyingly powerful, far more fearsome than the Hunter Lin Yuan had encountered before. They struck like black lightning, and in a mere moment, they slaughtered three of the Mechanical Warriors on the spot. The sheer ferocity of their presence made Lin Yuan gasp in shock, even through the blurry footage.
There was no doubt; these were at least e-Class Elite Warriors.
In less than three seconds, the remaining two Mechanical Warriors met the same swift fate, including the owner of this footage, d00981547, the captain of the Mercenary Group.
This unfortunate soul was cleaved by an Elite Warrior and sent crashing into a Composite Building. Naturally, this Composite Building was the predecessor of Lin Yuan's Warehouse Base.
In his final moments, this ill-fated individual’s Auditory Radar descended into darkness, with only a faint voice echoing.
“…This is a conspiracy…”
Watching this blurry footage sent chills down Lin Yuan's spine. It wasn't fear for himself; he understood that this footage had always existed within his Intellect because his Intelligence Chip and Engine Armor had merged with that unfortunate soul's Intelligence Chip. Now, activated by the Digital Password Lock, this final segment of footage surfaced.
However, due to severe damage to the Mechanical Warrior's Intelligence Chip, many memories were lost, leaving Lin Yuan unable to discern what conspiracy he referred to!
Yet Lin Yuan felt that something was definitely amiss.
He recalled what the Gatekeeper had said: among the Mutants cultivated on Earth, Elite Warriors typically reached e1 level at best. But according to that footage, those Mutants possessed at least five E-Class Mechanical Warriors!
This was undeniably terrifying; they boasted super strong Attack Power, incredible speed, and formidable Defense Power. At least, the Firestone High-Explosive Armor-Piercing Rounds in the hands of a Mechanical Warrior were utterly ineffective against them.
Such beings could easily take down a hundred Lin Yuans with a single strike!
Thus, there was something wrong with how events were unfolding.
First, what kind of conspiracy has that unfortunate Mercenary Group encountered?
Secondly, why have the last three Executives of the Sub-base all met with disastrous ends, going bankrupt, with one even being killed? If Lin Yuan remembers correctly, it was that very Executive who hired this Mercenary Group, so that Executive should not be the perpetrator of the conspiracy.
But then the question arises: could the conspirator be a Mutant?
Clearly, that is impossible. No matter how despicable or terrifying they are, they ultimately belong to the enemy's camp. Theoretically speaking, even if they were to eliminate someone, it would only be out of a sense of superiority and hatred; it would never be a conspiracy. Therefore, there is only one possibility: they were betrayed by their own.
So who exactly is this internal traitor?
Not a Mutant, not an Executive, and certainly not those five mechanical Mercenaries. The only remaining suspect seems to be the Exiled Butler from the Intellect Base—the Gatekeeper!
However, the problem is that this fellow is bound within the Sub-base in a state of exile, with his very essence imprisoned. How could he possibly orchestrate a conspiracy?
Even if Lin Yuan cannot impose punitive measures on the Gatekeeper right now, surely the previous three Executives were not so foolish? They couldn't possibly be idiots.
Though it seems absurd, Lin Yuan ultimately places all his suspicions on the Gatekeeper. No matter what, he does not want to become the fourth Executive to go bankrupt, nor does he want to be eliminated!
Moreover, based on past events, it seems that the Gatekeeper would actually relish his downfall! He certainly has a motive.
However, Lin Yuan will not seek confirmation from the Gatekeeper because if that Gatekeeper truly is the mastermind behind all these conspiracies, then he is indeed quite dangerous.
Furthermore, even if he were to confirm that the Gatekeeper is behind the conspiracy, what could he do? Kill the Gatekeeper? Impossible; he lacks that authority. His only option is to file a complaint with Mechanical City—this channel might offer some possibility.
Yet, since the Gatekeeper has already eliminated three Executives in succession, there must be some means behind it. So it’s entirely possible that the Gatekeeper is currently plotting how to eliminate him as well.
It is not an exaggeration to say that if there truly exists an E-Class Elite Warrior among the Mutants, then the fact that he has managed to put the Mutants in such a dire situation means that the E-Class Elite Warrior might very well take action personally.
However, even an E-Class Elite Warrior would be powerless as long as he remains in the cockpit of Mouse One and within the S-5 Sub-base.
Therefore, it was quite coincidental that at this moment, the Gatekeeper 'kindly' provided him with a flight route map. If this were mere coincidence, Lin Yuan would never believe it.
Based on these speculations, Lin Yuan felt he needed a detailed plan.
For now, regardless of whether the Gatekeeper is the mastermind behind any conspiracy, one thing is certain: the Gatekeeper is still bound by the rules of Mechanical City. He wouldn’t dare to play any tricks within the Sub-base, so as long as Lin Yuan remains inside the Sub-base, he is safe.
However, staying in the Sub-base forever, while safe, would also mean cooperating with the Gatekeeper's plan, which would ultimately lead to Lin Yuan's bankruptcy.
Thus, he did not want to go bankrupt; he wanted to continue growing and becoming stronger. To achieve that, he had to venture outside. Yet this outcome meant he might have to face an E-Class Mechanical Warrior among the Mutants.
The only asset he could rely on was Mouse One.
A new round of hide-and-seek was about to begin, and it would be at the highest difficulty level.
