Lin Yuan didn't have much time to ponder. He quickly pulled his First Mechanical Arm out from the Bone Blade of the Mutant Robot. The series of rapid attacks had taken nearly two hundred Health Points from him. If it weren't for his Knee Strike skill, the consequences would have been dire.
He then carefully searched the platform and sighed in relief upon confirming there were no other Mutant Robots around.
From the layout, this place didn’t look like a research facility; it resembled a standalone leisure space or an observation deck. The overall decor was tasteful, dominated by cool tones, and there was no hint of heat, despite the molten lava surging just outside.
This was undoubtedly a luxurious observation mansion that only super-rich individuals or national elites could occupy, at least in theory.
Moreover, Lin Yuan noticed that the various pieces of furniture on this three-hundred-square-meter platform were undamaged. Everything appeared orderly, as if the Mutant Robot had remained here quietly for over a thousand years.
However, Lin Yuan regretted that there was nothing he hoped to find in terms of Weapon Equipment. Aside from some high-tech products from Earth, there were numerous books and some yellowed photographs. The most prominent figure in the photos was a tall blonde woman with blue eyes—presumably the owner of this place, that Mutant Robot.
Aside from that, Lin Yuan couldn’t find anything else of interest. Of course, he couldn’t overlook something like Phantom Alloy.
This material was quite rare for him, but unfortunately, he couldn't obtain it; Phantom Alloy was simply too sturdy—his Hunter's Longsword couldn't even scratch it!
To be honest, Lin Yuan was quite curious about how Earth Humans managed to acquire such obviously high-grade Phantom Alloy back in the day.
After finishing his search, Lin Yuan turned back and unceremoniously dissected the Mutant Robot with his Hunter's Longsword. It wasn't that he had any twisted desires; he needed to understand the weaknesses of these Mutant Robots. After all, they were four-star threats. If he didn’t fully comprehend them, encountering one again would be tantamount to suicide.
This wasn’t about morality! He didn’t fancy being a fool who fed tigers!
The results of the dissection astonished Lin Yuan. The Enhancement Level of these Mutant Robots was even more terrifying than that of ordinary Mutated Clones, averaging at a staggering level. Particularly in the chest and abdomen areas, they had evolved into an entire set of integrated armor with an Enhancement Level reaching 8 points. Even a shot from a Heavy Sniper Rifle might not take them down instantly.
As for the legs of this Mutant Robot, they had evolved into complete Alloy Steel structures. Although their Enhancement Level was only 5 points, even if he managed to sever them, it wouldn’t have much impact. Moreover, their jumping ability far surpassed Lin Yuan’s Mechanical Body.
The only weakness seemed to be the temples; although they too were covered by a thick layer of Alloy armor due to evolution, being hit at close range by a powerful Mighty Bull shot would still be fatal.
Then there was the long neck, which had considerable resilience. With his Hunter's Longsword, he would need to swing with all his might to cut through it. However, in actual combat, he feared he wouldn’t get that chance because those two Bone Blades of the Mutant Robot were no joke; their overall Enhancement Level was 0 points and extremely sharp.
Thus, Lin Yuan wasted no time in chopping off those two Bone Blades. He intended to study them and modify them into more powerful weapons—perhaps a spear or something similar—since these Bone Blades could easily pierce through the chest armor of a Mutant Robot.
Using one's own spear against one's own shield—it was a clever strategy.
After everything was settled, Lin Yuan followed the usual procedure and directly utilized Energy Refinement to thoroughly purify the corpse of the Mutant Robot into Standard Biological Alloy. In the end, he managed to harvest a total of thirty-two grams of standard-grade Biological Alloy, which was quite a significant gain.
Subsequently, Lin Yuan patiently waited in this location for three days. This was somewhat troublesome, as he had to consider his Health Points. Previously, he thought that since it was just a pile of steel, what need was there for Health Points? Even if it melted, wouldn't it still exist?
However, now he believed that anyone who thought that way was foolish. Steel is steel, and Mechanical Life is Mechanical Life; the two cannot be confused. Just like humans would die if they were injured and not treated, Mechanical Life would also perish if not repaired—only the manifestation of their injuries differed.
If one were to rigidly apply standards to standards, that would be sheer stubbornness! It would be like hitting a wall and not knowing to turn back.
After three days, Lin Yuan's Health Points were fully restored. He roughly assembled two crude spears for himself. The sharp parts of the spears were made from the two Bone Blades, while the shafts were constructed from two alloy rods he scavenged, each about one and a half meters long. He strapped them to his back for emergencies.
With everything prepared, he stepped onto the Elevator and descended to the second-to-last level of the Underground Base.
Compared to the last level's platform, this second-to-last level of the Underground Base clearly bore a Research Style. Quarantine Rooms were visible everywhere, along with various mysterious Research Equipment. Of course, there were also numerous signs of destruction and scattered bones.
This research base on the second-to-last level was large, but Lin Yuan did not encounter any Mutant Robots. However, after passing through several security doors with evidently high defense levels, what he saw was somewhat different: all the Testing Equipment and Large Research Machinery had been completely cleared out!
It was important to note that they had been moved rather than devoured by some Mutant Robots.
Unconsciously, Lin Yuan pondered a question: those Mutant Robots that had undergone mutation but retained their intelligence—besides them, he couldn't think of anyone else who would enter here and remove all this Research Equipment.
Upon realizing this, Lin Yuan immediately heightened his vigilance. If things were indeed as he suspected, could this place be a base for those Mutant Resistance?
Although this possibility was slim, Lin Yuan did not dare to let his guard down. After all, this research base was extremely vast, estimated to cover several hundred thousand square meters. In such circumstances, those Mutants might not have sealed off all entrances to the base.
Thus, Lin Yuan cautiously proceeded while reducing his Energy Engine output to below 10%, ensuring he did not overlook any corner in search of potential surveillance equipment.
In this manner, after thoroughly searching the entire second-to-last level of the base without finding any Mutant Robots, he discovered that all research machinery had indeed been cleared out.
Not willing to give up just yet, Lin Yuan continued his search through the third-to-last level, fourth-to-last level, and even down to the ninth-to-last level in one go.
At this point, his meticulous search finally bore fruit; in one corridor, he found some very faint footprints.
The footprints were difficult to discern with the naked eye, but when Lin Yuan enhanced his Auditory Radar spectrum, he could begin to uncover the clues hidden within.
After some speculation and analyzing the nearly invisible dust surrounding the footprints, Lin Yuan formed a simple visual model in his mind within ten minutes. Based on the physical parameters of the Mutated Clones and Mutant Robots he had studied, he ultimately depicted two burly figures casually walking through the area.
Indeed, it was the Mutated Clones!
This Underground Research Base was undoubtedly a stronghold of the Resistance, which made sense. Given its concealed yet grand scale, how could they easily abandon such a place?
Of course, perhaps due to the need to cover up its previously destroyed exterior, the Resistance had not fully restored the base's passages and System. Otherwise, Lin Yuan would not have been able to infiltrate so quietly.
Moreover, and most importantly, Lin Yuan speculated that this underground research facility likely had many entrances. Besides the one on the island, there must be others in the Ocean, such as docks capable of accommodating submarines. This was very plausible; after all, for such a massive base to maintain its secrecy, hiding everything beneath the Ocean would be the best option.
This also explained why Lin Yuan had gone through so much trouble on the island without being detected by the Resistance—these individuals could very well be using underwater passages!
Realizing this situation made Lin Yuan feel both excited and anxious. He was thrilled because this could very well be a base of the Mutant Resistance. If he could destroy it, completing this mission alone would cover several decades' worth of expenses for his S-5 Sub-base.
However, he was anxious because if this was indeed a base of the Mutant Resistance, it would surely be heavily guarded. Even revealing a trace of Mutated Red Spider Silk could lead to fatal consequences.
So, should he sneak away quietly or cause widespread destruction?
