The vast wilderness always inexplicably lifts one's spirits, especially in this alien landscape. Lin Yuan couldn't understand why this planet was codenamed Black Algae. Initially, he thought it must be rich in some kind of black algae, but what he saw now was devoid of any trace of black.
Aside from the disgusting corpses of the bugs, overall, this was a light purple planet, with purple soil and purple rocks. As for plants, well, Lin Yuan had yet to spot a single one. It seemed there were no towering peaks or rushing rivers; everything lay flat and open, with only gentle undulations. From hundreds of meters above, the ground resembled a smooth, light purple satin that was mesmerizing.
It sounded beautiful, if one could overlook the numerous holes of varying diameters scattered across the surface—those were the nests of Spiny Worms.
They were everywhere, like rats, impossible to eradicate!
In the virtual meeting room, the Troll Captain was still engaged in a relentless argument with Various and Cat's Eye Captain. Lin Yuan had thought the Troll Captain was shameless enough, but he hadn’t anticipated that Cat's Eye Captain was equally skilled in this matter. They had been discussing a Mercenary Mission all along.
Fortunately, they finally reached their destination: the g--149 mine. Through Radar locking, he could see it was not a large structure, built in an oval shape like a fortress. There were three buildings in total, with no blind spots for shooting. All construction specifications prioritized maximum defense; he could see firing ports atop the circular fortifications and numerous automated defense weapons. However, most were severely damaged and in disarray. Two of the circular fortresses had massive breaches blasted into them. One could imagine how the Swarm had arrived like a flood, destroying the mine; any resistance would have been futile and instantly overwhelmed!
Watching this scene sent chills down Lin Yuan's spine. Although he hadn't yet seen any lively Spiny Worms or Zergs, he was certain that something catastrophic capable of destroying everything had occurred.
“There are likely no survivors left; the basic defenses have been breached. Under those damned bugs' assault, the miners inside would have had no chance to escape!”
At that moment, the Troll Captain and Cat's Eye Captain finally concluded their lengthy argument and reached a consensus judgment as if they had anticipated this outcome all along.
Lin Yuan couldn't understand why they felt compelled to engage in such serious discussions when it seemed so clear-cut—almost as if they were ready to tear each other apart over it.
And what about Thomas and Bison? Why were they so excited?
Something was off; something definitely felt wrong. These bastards must be hiding something! For such a trivial mission, there was no reason for such excitement and mystery!
But Lin Yuan couldn't pinpoint what the key issue was, and he knew that Troll Captain would never tell him.
“Search for enemy activity and report back promptly!”
The Troll Captain kept issuing orders while four Tanks from the Troll Mercenary Team began a thorough search alongside ten Tanks from the Cat's Eye Mercenary Team. In no time at all, results began to emerge.
“Ten thousand meters up is safe! No Flying Thorn Insects spotted!”
“Ground level is secure; numerous Zerg corpses found—suspected intense battle occurred here!”
“Bunker One is severely damaged; Bunker Two is also heavily damaged. Preliminary assessment indicates at least fifteen Elite Spiny Worms self-destructed here.”
“Bunker Three is intact, requesting to land!”
……
The flawless tactical coordination and early search efforts left Lin Yuan in awe. The five members of the Troll Squad and the eight from the Cat's Eye Team worked together with remarkable synergy, compiling various data and clues in less than three minutes.
“Papaya, you take control of the communication rescue vehicle and occupy the high ground at Bunker Two. Radar, switch to manual search and keep an eye on the situation within a hundred kilometers. Report immediately if anything happens. Cat's Eye, leave one person from your team to guard the entrance of Bunker Three, and also leave two Heavy Shield Tanks. The rest should enter the Underground Mine for search!”
The Troll Captain quickly suggested, which was essentially a plan they had discussed beforehand, so there was no disagreement. In no time, the entrance to Bunker Three was completely hacked open by the Troll Captain. Soon after, a massive entrance about fifty meters high and a hundred meters wide appeared, leading directly into the Underground Mine.
Although Lin Yuan wanted to follow them in to see for himself, he was just a pawn at this moment, not taken seriously at all. Moreover, for some reason, after entering the bunker, the Troll Captain and his team sealed the entrance again.
From then on, Lin Yuan found himself utterly idle. Of course, he couldn't be completely unoccupied; he still had to manually control the Radar to monitor the surroundings within a hundred kilometers. However, this was incredibly boring. He didn't believe he should just obediently follow orders; he needed to do something. If the Troll Captain and his team were feasting, he could at least sneak a sip of soup. Improving his own strength was paramount; otherwise, surviving the next three years would be questionable.
After parking the Integrated Communication Rescue Vehicle at the top of Number Two Fortress, Lin Yuan immediately got to work. He connected his Second Audio-Visual Radar with the Command Center on this tank so that he wouldn't have to remain inside it all the time and could move around within a three-kilometer radius. It was worth noting that above these three fortresses lay various pieces of Weapon Equipment Part torn apart by the Zerg, which were everywhere. While they might be trash to others, they were treasures to him!
This search proved fruitful; in less than half an hour, Lin Yuan collected over two thousand damaged parts, filling up every inch of space in the tank. Unfortunately, these parts were in such poor condition that reassembling them would require a significant amount of time.
At this moment, Lin Yuan was troubled about how to pass the time!
However, just as he began this self-entertaining disassembly work, the Energy Waveguide Radar suddenly detected an extremely faint signal. Despite multitasking, he still keenly picked it up.
“A Distress Signal?”
A thought struck Lin Yuan, but before he could confirm and lock onto the source of this signal, it vanished without a trace.
“What’s going on?”
Confused, Lin Yuan quickly increased the power and continued searching. This was crucial for their survival; thus, no trace of any Mutated Red Spider Silk could be overlooked.
Unfortunately, no matter how hard he tried afterward, that fleeting signal never reappeared.
Though unfamiliar with combat knowledge in mercenary operations outdoors, he remained vigilant. He immediately contacted the member of the Cat's Eye Mercenary Team who was on guard duty and reported this situation because their Search Radar was relatively advanced and might uncover some clues.
“A fleeting signal? Are you sure about that?” The guard from the Cat's Eye Team, also an f6 level Mechanical Warrior, codenamed Yellow Sparrow, was not a Shield Warrior. Instead, he was a genuine ranged attacker with exceptional sniping skills. Due to his professional specialization, his Auditory Radar had a longer range than Lin Yuan's—up to fifteen hundred meters—and could generate fifteen three-dimensional projections per second. Additionally, he had installed a long-range auditory radar on his mechanical body with an observation distance of up to twenty-five kilometers—an absolute marksman!
"Stop being paranoid, Papaya. Do you really think your close-combat sensitivity is stronger than my long-range capabilities while we're both activating our manual Radar search? Come on, I suspect that old Radar of yours is malfunctioning. The Micro-Ma 000 model, haha, that's an ancient relic from thousands of years ago; it's no surprise it's having issues. Don't worry, our Cat's Eye Captain is far more generous than that mouse. The Search Radar we have is the Ray Star 56 model, one of the top ten super Radar engines in today's civilian market, ensuring that no sneaky little thing can escape detection..."
Just as Yellow Sparrow arrived, his voice and image abruptly cut off, as if the signal on the Virtual Screen had been severed, leaving nothing but void!
In an instant, cold sweat erupted from Lin Yuan's heart. This was bad; something was definitely wrong. But there wasn't even a shadow around!
"Hey! Yellow Sparrow? Yellow Sparrow? If you can hear me, respond! What happened? Did you go after the Mantis?" Lin Yuan called out while stealthily moving away from the control panel and shrinking into a corner of the Tank, just in time to hide himself behind a pile of scrap materials he had previously collected.
The few seconds felt like years because if he wasn't mistaken, Yellow Sparrow had likely been taken out by some unknown expert. To evade Yellow Sparrow's senses and the Ray Star 56 Radar's search while silently eliminating him—this was definitely someone he couldn't afford to mess with!
As Lin Yuan prepared to repeat his call, in almost an instant, he heard a faint sound—barely perceptible. A long blade, as dazzling as a Flame Blade and fifteen centimeters thick, pierced through the Tank's alloy shell as if it were paper.
The spot where the blade struck was precisely where Lin Yuan should have been sitting at the control panel. Had he not moved away, he would have surely met his end at that moment; such a lethal strike was incredibly audacious.
However, at the same time, Lin Yuan sprang up and swiftly drew his Assault Longsword, slashing fiercely with a Cleaving motion. His strike tore through the Tank's armor without hesitation, hitting that unknown expert who should have been there.
No sound came from the impact, but Lin Yuan felt his Assault Longsword slightly falter as if it had been blocked by some kind of energy shield!
Clearly, he had struck his opponent; he just didn't know how much damage he had dealt. (To be continued.)
