An absurd beginning was followed by an equally absurd ending, to the point where Lin Yuan almost believed he had merely experienced a grand dream!
At this moment, he found himself in the Fortress Base, which he had once meticulously arranged as his stronghold. However, it had now transformed into a scene of wreckage. If not for the surface information stored in his intellect, he feared he would hardly recognize it.
This feeling was hard to describe.
In the distance, several buildings still stood among the ruins. Lin Yuan clearly remembered that there used to be a ferocious Dog-headed Wasp living there.
Yet, decades had passed; the place remained, but Lin Yuan was no longer the timid Mechanical Warrior he once was.
He wondered if that damned Gatekeeper was still around. That guy had already been an E7-level Mechanical Warrior back then and seemed to hide other secrets as well.
But what did it matter? With Lin Yuan's current strength, he had nothing to fear.
Still, he wasn't interested in seeking trouble with the Gatekeeper for now. Inside, he felt a bit frustrated and sad, or more accurately, a sense of loss akin to being homeless, even though it was absurd.
Hal's departure, Bison's choice, and Claire... Thankfully, there were still Thomas and Fat Three.
Lin Yuan finally remembered the two of them and quickly opened the Five-Dimensional Key Space to retrieve their Life Pods. After inputting the relevant activation procedures, about ten minutes later, Thomas's familiar voice echoed again.
"Ha! Captain? Where are we? Have we finally escaped that damned star system? It feels like I've been asleep for ages... Uh... Captain?"
Thomas jumped out of the Life Pod, immediately calling out in confusion. However, upon seeing Lin Yuan before him, he froze in shock. The figure standing in front of him was not the Lin Yuan he knew; instead, it was a Mechanical Warrior towering at least twenty meters tall, exuding an aura of immense strength. Especially notable were the thirty-meter-long Ghost Spear on his back and the equally formidable Starfall Super Heavy Interstellar Sniper Rifle—each detail underscoring just how powerful this Mechanical Warrior truly was!
“Thomas, long time no see. Yes, it's me, number 19047611, Mercenary codename Double Wood Forest, alias Papaya!” Lin Yuan said calmly, extending his massive Mechanical Arms. Back when he first met Thomas, his physique was so weak compared to Thomas that he seemed like a cooked noodle. Now, seventy-five years later, Thomas had transformed!
“This... this... is unbelievable! Captain? Is it really you? Ah! What on earth happened? How long have I been asleep? Did I miss something exciting? Where's Bison? Where's Hal?” Thomas exclaimed with immense surprise.
“Hal is dead, and Bison has become... some unknown life form. He decided to marry and have children, choosing not to return to our world. As for your slumber, it lasted about five Mechanical Years—not too long, but quite a lot has happened. If we get the chance in the future, I'll tell you more,” Lin Yuan hesitated before withholding the full truth regarding the Mysterious Wormhole, Dark Abyssal Being, Dark Domain Being, Eighth Dimension, and Ninth Dimension. If this information got out, they wouldn't be able to survive in Mechanical City, so it was better that Thomas remained unaware.
“Whew! I'm so hungry!” came the voice of Fat Three, who immediately thought about food upon waking.
“I know a great place; let me take you for a feast,” Lin Yuan laughed heartily. The earlier sadness quickly faded away as he spread his Mechanical Wings and transformed into a Mechanical Giant Bird, lifting Thomas and Fat Three into the air with a single swoop.
“Wow! Captain, is this your latest assembly? It's amazing! With your entire Mechanical Body now, you could easily apply to become an Elite Warrior in Mechanical City! Huh? What planet is this? It seems strange; there's even a Sub-base of Mechanical City here. Fantastic! Finally back to a civilized world,” Thomas shouted excitedly.
“Is that so? Thomas, if I remember correctly, this is your hometown—Earth. Do you still remember it?” Lin Yuan replied calmly as he soared toward the massive island he had discovered over the ocean, where many Mechanical Beasts resided—enough to satisfy both Fat Three and Thomas's appetites.
“Earth? This is actually Earth? Oh my god! Captain, to be honest, I don't remember much about this planet either. I've never been here; by the time I was born hundreds of years ago, all humans had already migrated to Mechanical City. I never expected it to be so desolate here. But it seems you're quite familiar with this place?” Thomas exclaimed loudly.
“Indeed. I awakened here; theoretically speaking, I am an Earthling. This place can be considered my hometown. Looking back on that time now feels quite wonderful,” Lin Yuan said with a hint of nostalgia. After all, deep down he was still human, but he couldn't express that.
“No way! Captain, you actually awakened on this desolate Earth? That's incredible! No wonder you looked so ragged when I first saw you. But we should keep this from Mechanical City; otherwise those damned Ministry of Internal Affairs will put you through an identity check—that would be a huge problem.” Just then, Lin Yuan's Auditory Radar detected a rather impressive aircraft rapidly approaching from the direction of the Ocean.
This aircraft was not like the weak ones Lin Yuan had seen before; it was clearly of a much higher grade. This piqued his curiosity—could it be that the Gatekeeper and the rebels had struck it rich after completely taking control of the S-15 Sub-base and upgraded their equipment?
However, Lin Yuan did not care too much; with his current strength, there was no need to worry about anything.
Just then, a request for communication came through.
"Hello, stranger. This is the Viper Mercenary Corps, Ninth Division. We are currently executing a Mercenary Mission on this planet and hope there will be no unpleasant incidents between us. If you need anything, please head to d11, the Coordinate Point; that is our temporary base. Thank you!"
Upon hearing this message, Lin Yuan was slightly taken aback. It turned out that this was not the Gatekeeper and the rebels, but rather a mercenary group—a rather sizable one at that. What had happened on Earth after he left? (To be continued.)
