It was a very pleasant morning, with the familiar sunrise, the familiar gravity, the familiar atmosphere, the familiar land, and a somewhat familiar language. On top of that, there was a cup of what looked like delicious coffee, likely rich and aromatic.
Although Lin Yuan was no longer in a position to savor it, that did not dampen his good mood at all.
Indeed, ever since he and Thomas, along with Fat Three, were allowed to board the interstellar patrol ship named Black Swan, all their troubles had been resolved. No one came looking for trouble anymore. The three of them were each assigned to three fairly decent cabins and were informed that in a month they would leave Earth and set off back to Mechanical City, reaching their destination six months later.
In an effort to impress the mechanical beauty named Vansdell, Thomas had dragged the clueless Fat Three along to try to get close to her. However, he claimed it was for the purpose of receiving a branch Mercenary Mission. This was a feature of the Mercenary Association: as long as an overall evaluation reached e1 level for a Mercenary Team, they were eligible to issue Mercenary Missions to other Mercenary Teams. The Viper Mercenary Corps had an impressive team rating of e5, naturally qualifying them to issue branch missions.
Unfortunately for Thomas, his luck was undoubtedly poor at that moment because most members of the Viper Mercenary Corps were currently idle, with only a few specific members conducting reconnaissance across Earth daily.
As a result, Thomas was unable to obtain any branch missions and lacked the charm needed to strike up a casual conversation with the mechanical beauty.
Thus, Lin Yuan watched as Thomas returned dejectedly while Fat Three seemed to have struck some sort of fortune, happily devouring three heads of Brazilian mutated roasted Bison.
However, Lin Yuan had no interest in comforting this love-struck fellow; he remained still and patiently examined the entire Black Swan while listening to the public channel of the Viper Mercenary Corps. This was an unguarded communication channel where everyone could talk within a certain range, exchanging ideas and complaints—quite entertaining indeed.
“Captain, don’t you find this boring at all? I feel like this is nothing short of a tragedy. Just thinking about having to stay in this state for another seven months makes me feel like I’m going insane,” Thomas finally broke the silence, clearly seeking some sort of help or advice from Lin Yuan.
“Oh really? I actually have an excellent suggestion for you. You could go sleep in a Life Pod. I can guarantee that when you wake up again, you’ll already be stepping foot in Mechanical City. See? How easy is that?” Lin Yuan suggested with a smile.
“Well—okay, Captain. To be honest, I really like that tough girl. Um, I guess you Mechanical Life folks wouldn’t understand what liking someone means. Anyway, I need to catch her attention—uh, something like getting her to notice me. You must understand what I mean. So—so can I borrow some salary in advance?” Thomas stammered.
“Salary? An advance?”
This time Lin Yuan chuckled and said deliberately, “Hey, Thomas, don’t you know that the Troll Squad is no longer associated with us? I’m not your former captain anymore; you’re not my hired mercenary. We can only be friends now. So it’s normal for you to borrow some Mechanical Coins from me, but if you want an advance on your salary—sorry, but I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint you!”
“Uh, fine then, Captain. It’s my fault; I’m just used to it. And as long as you form a Mercenary Group, I will definitely join. Salary doesn’t matter; of course, I’d prefer—and be honored—to be your friend. So now can you lend me some Mechanical Coins? You know that on the lowest level of Black Swan are the Fighting Training Hall and the Mechanical Repair Hall where many people are having fun. I think I should be able to win back a lot of Mechanical Coins there so that I can afford to buy Vansdell a drink!” Thomas said earnestly.
“A drink? Are you sure?” Lin Yuan exclaimed in surprise; after all, this was supposed to be an incredibly intoxicating skill—how could Thomas mistake it for just a drink?
“Yes, I'm sure! It's quite a nice drink; unfortunately for you, Captain, you won’t be able to taste it.”
“Alright then, but Thomas, you probably don’t know that my Mechanical Coins… are currently at zero. I'm even considering ways to earn some because we need to pay quite a hefty fare for this trip on the Fair Wind Ship. Do you understand what I mean?” Lin Yuan said with an amused expression. In reality, he had various materials hidden away that could fetch quite a price if sold individually; however, those were not things he could show openly. Thus far, he remained in a state of financial struggle.
"However, you don't need to be downcast. I actually have a way to get that Wansdell to notice you. You should know that while she appears beautiful, her inner self is incredibly violent. Right now, she is training in the underground Cabin and has set a price of 1000 Mechanical Coins per minute to find a warrior who can spar with her. So, Mr. Thomas, are you sure you're willing to earn such a handsome sum?"
"Of course!"
Thomas laughed heartily and turned to rush out eagerly. By the look on his face, it seemed he would be quite happy in the near future.
Lin Yuan smiled and pointed at Fat Three, saying, "You should go too. Earning 1000 Mechanical Coins every minute is quite good!"
After sending Fat Three off, Lin Yuan fell back into a daze. In truth, his arrangement was not just a simple suggestion for Thomas. He hoped that both Thomas and Fat Three would join the Viper Mercenary Corps as companions after all the hardships he had faced. Lin Yuan valued them greatly.
He could no longer form a Mercenary Group, as he had now become an Elite Mechanical Warrior. Upon returning to Mechanical City, he would need to go to some unknown place for training, starting from e1 level all the way up to e7 level. It sounded somewhat similar to an academic institution.
For Lin Yuan, this was an opportunity. Although he felt no sense of belonging in Mechanical City, he was acutely aware of his own insignificance. Therefore, this Elite training would help alleviate the awkwardness of his humble beginnings!
Perhaps he could finally learn from the System how to become a true Elite Mechanical Warrior.
The training period would likely be long, so it was crucial to ensure that Thomas and Fat Three were settled.
Improving their strength was one aspect; finding them a mercenary team where they could belong was even more important.
It was clear that despite their brief interaction, the atmosphere of the Viper Mercenary Corps pleased Lin Yuan. Especially since nearly half of the team members were descendants of Earth Humans, making it easy for Thomas to integrate.
Lin Yuan would bet that if Thomas and Fat Three demonstrated considerable strength, the Viper Mercenary Corps would not hesitate to extend an olive branch.
"Woo woo woo..."
Just as Lin Yuan thought about this, he heard heavy footsteps outside the Cabin, along with some gruesome sounds. Then the hatch opened, revealing the signature bright smile of Giant Jordo.
"Hey! Mr. Papaya, you seem quite relaxed! Don't be surprised; I'm here to deliver gifts. Your two friends have unfortunately provoked that humanoid mother Tyrannosaurus, Vansdell. So, regrettably, they were knocked out in 0 seconds and 4 seconds respectively. According to the rules, they will not receive the reward of 1000 Mechanical Coins per minute. Goodbye! Mr. Papaya!"
Giant Jordo boomed, simultaneously opening a public channel that perfectly showcased how Thomas and Fat Three were defeated. As a result, laughter erupted across the entire public channel; it was like a breath of fresh air in a dull world!
"Thank you! Mr. Jordo, you truly are a gentleman!" Lin Yuan replied with a smile as he accepted his two friends who had been thoroughly beaten into an unrecognizable state.
"Woo woo woo—"
Thomas whimpered, unable to even find his mouth, which clearly demonstrated just how formidable Wansdell's strength was.
"Very good, well done, keep it up!" Lin Yuan said happily, then traded one Modification Point each to Thomas and Fat Three.
These Modification Points were incredibly valuable, almost like a miraculous artifact, especially for Carbon-Based Life forms like Thomas and Fat Three. One Mechanical Modification Point could be exchanged for three Cell Vitality Modification Points.
"Take your time enjoying it, and then continue to earn that thousand Mechanical Coins for me. We still need to pay the fare for the Fair Wind Ship, and I’m sure you don’t want me to go there alone, right?"
Lin Yuan casually remarked as he kicked Thomas and Fat Three out. Sure enough, after a little over ten minutes, the two of them sprang back to life and continued their quest to earn that thousand Mechanical Coins.
Of course, the results of their labor were still the same; they only managed to gather three Cell Vitality Modification Points, which were not enough to turn Thomas and Fat Three into experts. Those Cell Vitality Modification Points also required some improvement in their Lifeform.
Fortunately, Lin Yuan had amassed a considerable number of Modification Points, so casually giving a few points to Thomas and Fat Three was no problem at all.
Naturally, Lin Yuan would keep a close watch on the entire process. He wouldn’t give them too much; he simply wanted them to use this method to rapidly enhance their combat abilities.
It wouldn’t be long before someone would stop smiling!
Lin Yuan was looking forward to it. (To be continued.)
