“Goo~”
“What was that sound?” Yiling looked around but didn’t notice anything unusual.
Luo Mengqi suddenly said, “I’m just hungry.”
“Then let’s find a restaurant to eat something!”
“That’s easier said than done. It’s so late at night; what restaurants are still open?”
Indeed, it was already past midnight, and they hadn’t walked very far. Unfamiliar with the area, they had no idea where to find a place to eat. From the route they had taken, it seemed like all they could see were houses, with no signs of any eateries. Moreover, their slow progress wasn’t due to their speed; it was just that parts of this ancient city felt like a maze. They had wandered for quite a while before finding their way out. Originally, Luo Mengqi had planned to let Yiling fly up and scout for directions, but they soon realized that this place lacked modern technology. There were no hoverboards or even a single robot in sight. However, basic technologies like televisions, computers, and phones were still present.
It wasn’t that Luo Mengqi didn’t want Yiling to fly; she just couldn’t be sure if the locals had ever seen a hoverboard. Causing unnecessary panic would be troublesome. Another reason she hadn’t gone out to eat was that she had rushed out without bringing any money! Helplessly, they could only endure their hunger. If things got too difficult, they could always head back; with Yiling’s speed, getting home wouldn’t take long.
“Hey!” Just as Luo Mengqi was pondering where to find Sima Chuan, Yiling suddenly exclaimed with delight.
“What are you shouting about?”
“Look ahead.” Following Yiling’s direction, Luo Mengqi spotted a house not far away that still had its lights on—and it appeared to be a restaurant. Overjoyed, Luo Mengqi thought of something else and smiled wryly as she strolled forward. At that moment, a loud “gurgle” echoed in Yiling’s ears. She immediately grabbed Luo Mengqi and dashed to the entrance of the restaurant.
The door of the restaurant had a sign hanging on it with neat calligraphy. At that moment, a woman in her forties who was sweeping the floor noticed them. Dressed in simple attire, the woman approached them with a friendly smile and asked, “What would you two like to eat?”
Just as Luo Mengqi was about to speak, Yiling nodded eagerly.
“Then please come in! We’ll be closing soon.” The woman gestured for them to enter.
As soon as they stepped inside, Yiling pulled Luo Mengqi along and said, “Just get something that can fill us up.”
Once seated, Luo Mengqi finally found an opportunity to speak quietly. “Did you know I didn’t bring any money when I left?”
“Why didn’t you say so earlier? What are we going to do now?”
“I’ve been dragged along by you this whole time; it’s hard to think straight! Now that you’re asking me what we should do, how would I know? Let’s just figure it out with her.”
"It seems this is the only way."
Before long, the woman brought over a steaming bowl of fragrant noodles, accompanied by two cups of iced milk tea. Luo Mengqi looked at it in surprise. "This..."
The woman smiled and said, "Don't worry, these drinks are on me for both of you. No need to be polite."
"Thank you then, heh heh!" Luo Mengqi replied with a wry smile. She then exchanged a glance with Yiling, who immediately shook her head. The woman caught this exchange. "Is there something you two need? Feel free to share; maybe I can help."
"Alright! I'll be straightforward. The thing is, we're here looking for a friend of ours who went missing some time ago. As soon as we heard news about him, we rushed over, but we left in such a hurry that we forgot to bring any money. So, we won't be having the noodles or milk tea."
Upon hearing this, the woman laughed and said, "I thought it was something serious! Since that's the case, eat the noodles without worry; I won't charge you."
"No, no, that can't be right!" Luo Mengqi immediately refused.
"If I say it's fine, then it's fine. Just eat comfortably. If you really feel bad about it, how about this: you can work here at my restaurant. Meals and lodging are provided, plus you'll earn a salary."
"This..." Luo Mengqi hesitated.
"Hey! No need to hesitate; I'm actually in need of two helpers at my restaurant. Since I've run into both of you today, I won't have to recruit anyone else." The woman then turned to the man who was calculating at the counter. "Right, A Niu?"
The man smiled and said, "Yes, just stay on with us."
Yiling also encouraged her, saying, "Sister, there's no problem; just stay!"
Luo Mengqi had no choice but to agree. The woman then took them toward the counter. "Let me introduce you; this is the owner of the restaurant and my husband, Geng Erniu. I'm Yang Xiuying, the owner’s wife. You can call him Uncle Erniu and me Aunt Xiuying from now on."
"Okay!" Just as Luo Mengqi was about to introduce herself, two people came down the stairs—a boy and a girl around her age. The boy said, "Dad, we've cleaned up the upstairs." Upon seeing Luo Mengqi and Yiling, they stood at the stairway with puzzled expressions.
Geng Erniu shook his head with a smile and said, "What are you two standing there for? These are our new helpers. Come over and say hello."
They walked over. "Hello, I'm Hong Chen; I'm here to work as a helper," said the girl.
"Hello, I'm Geng Qing. I'm also here as a helper."
"Hello, my name is Luo Mengqi, and this is Yiling."
"This is my son, Geng Qing, and Hong Chen is my niece. You two can sleep with Hong Chen tonight; her room and bed are quite spacious. I'll help you clear out another room. Any questions?" Geng Erniu added.
Luo Mengqi smiled and nodded. Seeing that she had no objections, he asked Hong Chen, "Hong Chen, they'll be sleeping with you tonight. If you don't want to, just come out; it's fine."
Hong Chen showed no signs of refusal and instead seemed a bit happy as she replied, "No problem at all!"
"That's settled then. Let's get some rest early tonight; you all must be tired. Sleep well!"
"Hey! Where do you live? How did you find your way here?" Yang Xiuying wanted to chat more with Luo Mengqi, so she casually brought up a topic.
"Me? I live in..." Before Luo Mengqi could finish her sentence, her stomach let out a loud growl, causing everyone to laugh. Luo Mengqi's face turned a bit red. "I'm sorry! I'm just really hungry."
Yang Xiuying stopped laughing and said to Luo Mengqi, "It's fine! Go eat something. You should rest early too. You've been out for quite a while; you must be tired."
"Okay!" Luo Mengqi quickly made her way to the table and sat down, devouring the food eagerly.
