"Hey, hey..." Alvis chuckled, looking at Barnett and saying, "Do you want to know? You'll find out soon enough."
Barnett furrowed his brow, feeling that something was off. At that moment, a bright light appeared some distance away from Sima Chuan and the others.
"Not good, he's going to self-destruct! Run!" Barnett shouted as he dropped Alvis and dashed toward Sima Chuan.
"Self-destruct?" Alger murmured, suddenly widening his eyes as he saw Barnett rushing toward them. He scooped up Sima Chuan without caring about his injuries and took off running.
Just as the four of them were nearing the source of the light, there was a loud explosion, and a massive shockwave sent Sima Chuan and the others flying.
In front of the Time Reversal Device, various Sages, city lords, and Regional Leaders were in a state of extreme excitement. However, there's an old saying: "Joy begets sorrow." Just as they were reveling in their excitement, the devices connected to the Time Reversal Device began to flicker with red light.
A mechanical voice emanated from the Time Reversal Device: "Warning, warning, spatial disturbance detected."
"What? How could this happen? Noel!" Markett looked incredulously at the Time Reversal Device before him.
"Did we fail?" A single thought suddenly crossed everyone's mind. After a moment, the flickering red lights abruptly stopped.
"What just happened?" Everyone was curious about what had transpired. They began to ponder the reasons behind this situation. Although many scenarios came to mind, no one knew which guess was true.
Meanwhile, the shockwave had thrown Sima Chuan and his companions to different locations.
Sima Chuan landed hard on the ground. With his fading consciousness, he took in his surroundings. He found himself in a slum where houses were dilapidated and garbage was strewn everywhere. At that moment, Sima Chuan had lost too much blood; his vision blurred and he fainted.
Alger had it the worst. Initially holding onto Sima Chuan, he was violently separated by the force of the shockwave and was thrown into a pit without any preparation. Qiong fared better; he managed to pull Alger out from the hole. Once out, Alger kept writhing in pain, touching his bruised and battered body.
After a while, Alger finally stopped moving and grinned through the pain. "What a disastrous start! I didn't expect things to go south right away. But now we're scattered; what should we do next?" He looked at Qiong, waiting for an answer.
"We should take some time to rest and familiarize ourselves with our surroundings while searching for Sima Chuan and Nai."
"Alright then, let's get going." Alger said as he slowly moved forward. It wasn't that he didn't want to hurry; it was just too painful.
Meanwhile, Barnett had sensed the power of the shockwave from the start. After flipping in mid-air a few times, he landed steadily on his feet. He calmly surveyed his surroundings before choosing a direction and striding forward.
"Phew, I'm exhausted! How could this guy be so badly injured?" A person dressed in beige clothing with a hat on their head and dirt on their face complained as they looked at someone lying on a rickety bed.
The person stepped in a little, gazing at the face of the injured man. He looked delicate and pure, and she silently observed him.
At that moment, Sima Chuan felt as if he had woken from a long sleep. Gradually, he opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was a shabby wooden board with some cobwebs on it. He was curious about how he ended up here, but one thing was certain: he was at least safe now. Sima Chuan turned his head and saw a face. He couldn't tell if it was male or female, but regardless of who it was, this person posed no threat to him at the moment.
Sima Chuan looked around the small room. It contained some essential items and a few messy things piled in the corner. Overall, the room was relatively clean. Noticing that there was no one else around, Sima Chuan decided to ask the person in front of him, "Excuse me, where is this place?"
"Ah? Oh, this is..." The person in the beige clothing was startled awake by Sima Chuan's question. Just as they were about to get up, their tone suddenly changed: "Hmph, why should I tell you?"
"Um, well?" Sima Chuan coughed twice. "I need to find my companions." He attempted to get up but was pushed back onto the bed by that person.
"Where do you think you're going? Can't you see how badly you're hurt?"
"Then can you tell me where I am? I'm new here and not familiar with anything." Sima Chuan leaned against the headboard.
"Fine, I'll tell you. This is a slum; this house is my home, and this room is my room. Are you satisfied now?" The person explained and then shouted at Sima Chuan.
Sima Chuan nodded and fell into deep thought. The person watched him ponder and then nudged him, saying, "Hey, what's your name?"
"Sima Chuan." He still preferred this name; Noel felt somewhat unfamiliar to him.
"Nice name. Since it's your first time here and you're not familiar with the place, you'll stick with me from now on." The person grinned mischievously.
"What?" Sima Chuan looked at them in surprise but thought to himself: I'm new here and know nothing about this place; having someone as a guide would make things easier.
Seeing that Sima Chuan didn't respond, the person urged him, "Hey, say something."
Sima Chuan lifted his head and looked at them. "Okay, I agree."
"Great." The person nodded in satisfaction. "My name is Annie; just call me Boss from now on."
"You’re a girl?" Sima Chuan asked in surprise.
"Of course! Are you going to back out now?" Annie threatened. "You better not refuse; even if you wanted to back out now, it wouldn't matter." Despite her words, she felt a bit nervous inside. The moment she saw Sima Chuan, she sensed something extraordinary about him and believed he was no ordinary person.
Sima Chuan couldn't help but smile bitterly at Annie's words. "Don't worry; I won't back out."
"Mm-hmm." Annie clasped her hands at her chest, nodded, and extended one hand.
"What’s wrong?" Sima Chuan asked curiously.
"First, pay the contribution fee."
"What?"
"Hurry up and give it to me, or you'll regret it," Annie said fiercely.
"Alright." Sima Chuan sighed and pulled out a gold bar from his belongings. This gold bar had been made by Aitak's people to ensure that Sima Chuan and the others wouldn't feel too awkward when they returned to the past. Although this gold bar was of little use to Sima Chuan and his companions, it represented a significant amount of wealth for the people here. When Annie saw the gold bar, she initially didn't react, but then she jumped up and shouted.
"Great! With this, no one in this area will dare to mess with you!" Annie said proudly.
"Yeah, I got it."
"Alright then, you rest for now. I'm going out for a bit. If I come back tonight and see you haven't returned, you're in big trouble."
"I understand, don't worry." Sima Chuan nodded repeatedly.
