Chapter 156: Dead Zone
“How could this happen? The police just checked the elevator a few moments ago. Did they mess something up? Huh, strange, why is there no signal here?” After pressing the elevator call button, the Receptionist appeared somewhat flustered. She intended to make a phone call for clarification but was shocked to find that the display was blank.
Through the Bowl Wall nearby, she could clearly see the scene outside; the road below was bustling with traffic. However, it felt as if the floor they were on was completely isolated from the outside world.
The stairway was blocked by debris from behind, and with the elevator out of power, there were no other normal means to leave this floor.
Except for the two ends near the Bowl Wall, the corridor grew increasingly dim as one moved toward the center. The crimson carpet, combined with the dark surroundings, made it feel like they had entered a passageway to the Shura Underworld.
Aside from the sounds made by the three people present, the entire floor was eerily silent.
Now that the elevator was out of service and the stairs were sealed off, the previously unbothered Receptionist's face turned pale as she unconsciously moved closer to Yang Xiaoyou and the others.
“I... I feel like something is off here. It shouldn’t be this quiet,” said the Welcoming staff, her voice trembling slightly.
When the elevator was functioning normally, she thought everyone was waiting in the conference room. But now that it had inexplicably malfunctioned, she finally began to notice how different everything felt around them.
Even if all the main staff were in a meeting, it was impossible for not a single ordinary employee to be present on this floor. Yet, the current scene was terrifyingly silent; no matter how desolate it might be, it shouldn't look like this.
“It’s not just a feeling; there is definitely something wrong. There’s a smell of blood here,” Nobunaga Hideyoshi said, his eyes shifting uneasily as he surveyed the dark corridor before him.
“Yeah, it feels really bad, like someone is watching us from the shadows,” Yang Xiaoyou added, instinctively shrinking his neck and then glancing up at a nearby security camera.
These cameras should have been connected to the security room. However, when they entered, they hadn’t noticed anything unusual on this floor. Clearly, something was wrong with these cameras as well.
Just then, a crackling sound suddenly erupted from the intercom system on this floor, creating a chaotic and jarring noise that added an even more eerie atmosphere to their surroundings.
At that moment, the Receptionist began to tremble all over, her face turning ghostly pale.
"Long-term engagement in this kind of work has dulled some of my vigilance, and your Chinese Empire is quite strict with firearm regulations," Nobunaga Hideyoshi said, taking a breath. He had come out to negotiate without considering bringing any weapons.
In his view, the student beside him clearly posed no threat either.
However, at that moment, he heard a series of loud noises coming from Yang Xiaoyou's direction. Turning to look, he saw Yang Xiaoyou had approached a fire hydrant and forcefully smashed it with her elbow, retrieving a fire axe from inside.
Seeing Yang Xiaoyou adapt faster than himself, a flicker of surprise crossed Nobunaga Hideyoshi's eyes.
"Here, take this," Yang Xiaoyou said as she tossed the fire axe to him and then grabbed a fire extinguisher, slinging it over her shoulder.
Weighing the fire extinguisher in her hands, Yang Xiaoyou swung it hard against the bowl wall beside her, seemingly trying to break it to attract attention outside.
With a loud crash, the tempered glass shattered, creating a crack.
Although it seemed like a decent result, Yang Xiaoyou felt her heart sink. The bowl had been tampered with; she had partially lifted the restrictions with that blow, yet it only resulted in this level of damage.
"There's no need to keep trying. It's usually tempered glass; I can't break it with just this tool. Even if I did manage to break it, given the height here, it wouldn't necessarily draw attention quickly. Even if we did attract attention, with the elevators and stairs out of order, any support would arrive quite slowly. The fastest way to deal with our current predicament is to resolve the trouble right in front of us," Nobunaga Hideyoshi said calmly after testing the fire axe in his hands.
He glanced at the interior of the hallway before slowly making his way inside.
With a somewhat sullen expression, Yang Xiaoyou took one last look at the bowl wall before turning away and following Nobunaga Hideyoshi with the cumbersome fire extinguisher in hand.
The receptionist watched as the two headed deeper inside, her face paling slightly. Hesitating for a moment, she looked around and feeling isolated, she gritted her teeth and took off her high heels, holding them in her hands as she followed after them.
Clutching her high heels tightly and shrinking back slightly as if preparing to use them as weapons,
"Shh! There's movement in the room, and there's also a smell of blood coming from these rooms," Nobunaga Hideyoshi said as they approached the conference room, his ears perked up as he made a gesture for silence.
"Is anyone there? Is there really someone inside?" The ever-anxious Welcoming heard the increasing commotion from the adjacent office. A flicker of hope crossed her eyes; any sign of life in this dark environment undoubtedly brought her a sense of security.
She walked toward the office door, reaching out to grasp the handle and push it open.
But just then,
A hand suddenly clamped down on her arm!
The unexpected attack made her instinctively scream, flinging her high heel backward!
At the same time, she turned to see the figure that had assaulted her!!
It was none other than Yang Xiaoyou!
With one hand swatting away the flying high heel, Yang Xiaoyou firmly grabbed hold of Welcoming, preventing her from opening the door.
At that moment, a violent crash echoed from within the office, causing the wooden door to shake violently.
This sudden turn of events made Welcoming's heart race. She realized that she hadn't heard anyone speak until now; this unexpected noise felt even more terrifying.
Nobunaga Hideyoshi, who had been moving forward, felt his heart skip a beat as similar crashes erupted from nearby office doors.
The sound of "bang bang bang" continued relentlessly, as if something were about to break through the door.
"This place is too cramped! Run ahead! It's the smell of those who haven't died completely!" At this moment, Yang Xiaoyou pushed Nobunaga Hideyoshi forward and took the lead, running toward a slightly more open area ahead.
They had only taken a few steps when the office door they had just been in was suddenly slammed open with a loud bang, splintering wood flying everywhere. A blood-soaked figure in a white shirt stumbled out.
Welcoming, who had also been ready to flee, slowed down upon seeing that it was a person. However, when she caught sight of the shirted man who had crashed through the door and fallen to the ground due to the force of impact, her heart raced. As he lifted his head, she let out a piercing scream and turned to run towards Yang Xiaoyou and the others.
The man's cheek was gruesomely torn, revealing raw flesh beneath. Even though his mouth was closed, one could see his teeth through the gaping wound.
His pale skin and vacant eyes combined with such a horrific appearance were truly terrifying.
After he burst through the door, more figures emerged behind him—people whose arms hung limply at their sides, appearing utterly drained of strength.
"Help! Help me! No! Don't bite me! Please!"
Welcoming, who had initially intended to follow Yang Xiaoyou, took a couple of steps before another office door was also flung open. Several newly emerged corpses blocked her path entirely.
The white-shirted corpse that had chased after her lunged forward and knocked her to the ground. At that moment, all she could do was let out one final wail; she was unable to put up any resistance whatsoever.
(To be continued.)
